22. MENSE MAIO
On the Occasion of the First of may. Encyclical promulgated 30 April, 1965.
http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Paul06/p6month.htm
THE MONTH OF MAY
MENSE MAIO ENCYCLICAL LETTER ON THE OCCASION OF THE FIRST OF MAY Promulgated by His Holiness Pope Paul VI On April 30, 1965 Venerable Brothers, As the month of May draws near, a month which the piety of the Faithful has specially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady, We are gladdened at the thought of the moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world will soon be paying to the Queen of Heaven. For this is the month during which Christians, both in Church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the gifts of God's mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance. This pious practice, by which the Blessed Virgin is honored and the Christian people enriched with spiritual gifts, gladdens and consoles us. Mary remains ever the path that leads to Christ. Every encounter with her can only result in an encounter with Christ Himself. For what other reason do we continually turn to Mary than to seek for the Christ she holds in her arms to seek in her, through her and with her the Savior to Whom men, in the perplexities and dangers of life here below, must of necessity have recourse, and to Whom they feel the ever recurring need of turning as to a haven of safety and an all-surpassing source of life? It is precisely because the month of May is a powerful incentive to more fervent and trusting prayer, and because during it our petitions find their way more easily to the compassionate heart of Our Blessed Lady, that it has been a custom dear to Our Predecessors to choose this month, dedicated to Mary, for inviting the Christian people to offer up public prayers, whenever the needs of the Church demanded it, or whenever danger hovered menacingly over the world. This year, We too, Venerable Brothers, feel the need of sending out a similar appeal to the whole Catholic world. When We look at the present needs of the Church or at the state of peace in the world, We have compelling reasons for believing that the present hour is especially grave; that it makes a call for united prayer from the whole Christian people more than ever a matter of urgency.

Deputy Secretary Wolfowitz Interview with Sam Tannenhaus, Vanity Fair
Q: What do you think all the conspiritorial talk is? Do you have any notion, in Europe and here? What are people looking at this way? Wolfowitz: I think it's pretty obvious and I think it's pretty disgraceful but all you can do is ignore it and go on and get the job done. Q: What is it? I mean some say anti-Semitism. I guess in Europe that would be Wolfowitz: I just said all I'm going to say about it. Q: Okay. There's a question now as to whether in Iraq itself Wolfowitz: You know it's completely out in the open who holds what views in this Administration. You couldn't be more transparent about what the arguments are. The most significant thing that has produced what is admittedly a fairly significant change in American policy is the events of September 11th which are going to count as one of the If you had to pick the ten most important foreign policy things for the United States over the last 100 years it would surely rank in the top ten if not number one. It's the reason why so much has changed, and people who refuse to look at that, for whatever reason, or are unwilling to face up to the implications of that then go around and look for some nefarious explanation. But it's shameful.

CARE SHEET FOR SNAKES
By Paul Hollander pholland@iastate.edu (Freely Distributable) Each snake has various needs that must be met in order to keep it in good health in captivity. The following is an outline of factors that are important to the well-being of your pet. TEMPERATURE: A reptile has the same temperature as its surroundings; it simply moves to a warmer area to heat up and a colder spot to cool down. Most have an "optimum" body temperature that can be maintained within a few degrees and that generally lies between 80 and 88 degrees F. Most tropical species prefer the top half of that range, and most temperate zone snakes like the bottom half. A temperature gradient in the cage lets the snake decide how warm it wants to be. A thermometer can be the herper's best friend because a snake won't eat if it's more than a few degrees below optimum temperature. Snakes have a day-night temperature cycle in the wild. Some studies indicate that if a reptile is constantly held at optimum temperature for weeks, it suffers heat stress. Males also have the sperm killed. It is probably best for a snake to spend the night at a temperature 5 to 20 degrees F below its daytime activity temperature.

Texture Mapping as a Fundamental Drawing Primitive
Paul Haeberli and Mark Segal
June 1993
Abstract
Texture mapping has traditionally been used to add realism to computer graphics images. In recent years, this technique has moved from the domain of software rendering systems to that of high performance graphics hardware. But texture mapping hardware can be used for many more applications than simply applying diffuse patterns to polygons. We survey applications of texture mapping including simple texture mapping, projective textures, and image warping. We then describe texture mapping techniques for drawing anti-aliased lines, air-brushes, and anti-aliased text. Next we show how texture mapping may be used as a fundamental graphics primitive for volume rendering, environment mapping, color interpolation, contouring, and many other applications. ORDINATIO SACERDOTALIS
OF JOHN PAUL II
TO THE BISHOPS
OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
ON RESERVING PRIESTLY ORDINATION
TO MEN ALONE Venerable Brothers in the Episcopate, 1. Priestly ordination, which hands on the office entrusted by Christ to his Apostles of teaching, sanctifying and governing the faithful, has in the Catholic Church from the beginning always been reserved to men alone. This tradition has also been faithfully maintained by the Oriental Churches. When the question of the ordination of women arose in the Anglican Communion, Pope Paul VI, out of fidelity to his office of safeguarding the Apostolic Tradition, and also with a view to removing a new obstacle placed in the way of Christian unity, reminded Anglicans of the position of the Catholic Church: "She holds that it is not admissible to ordain women to the priesthood, for very fundamental reasons. These reasons include: the example recorded in the Sacred Scriptures of Christ choosing his Apostles only from among men; the constant practice of the Church, which has imitated Christ in choosing only men; and her living teaching authority which has consistently held that the exclusion of women from the priesthood is in accordance with God's plan for his Church."(1) But since the question had also become the subject of debate among theologians and in certain Catholic circles, Paul VI directed the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to set forth and expound the teaching of the Church on this matter. This was done through the Declaration Inter Insigniores, which the Supreme Pontiff approved and ordered to be published.(2)

My esteemed Brothers in the Episcopate

Dear Brothers and Sisters! Easter
which returns week by week, celebrating Christ's victory over sin and death, the fulfilment in him of the first creation and the dawn of "the new creation" (cf. 2 Cor 5:17). It is the day which recalls in grateful adoration the world's first day and looks forward in active hope to "the last day", when Christ will come in glory (cf. Acts Th 4:13-17) and all things will be made new (cf. Rev Rightly, then, the Psalmist's cry is applied to Sunday: "This is the day which the Lord has made: let us rejoice and be glad in it" ( Ps 118:24). This invitation to joy, which the Easter liturgy makes its own, reflects the astonishment which came over the women who, having seen the crucifixion of Christ, found the tomb empty when they went there "very early on the first day after the Sabbath" ( Mk 16:2). It is an invitation to relive in some way the experience of the two disciples of Emmaus, who felt their hearts "burn within them" as the Risen One walked with them on the road, explaining the Scriptures and revealing himself in "the breaking of the bread" (cf.

Does RSS scale? : Fri, August 03, 2007
HTTP is a pull protocol, feed readers want to have updates pushed to them, not a good start for the technology some say will change the World. So what do feed readers do? They poll the HTTP server time and again asking for changes. Say it polls every hour, then multiply those polls by a lot of users and we're heading for a big bandwidth bill. HTTP was designed to cope with repeat visiters who already had a representation of a resource that had not changed, by introducing the if_modified_since request header and 304 Not Modified response header. But that doesn't help when we do have a changed resource but it's only a single RSS entry of a 10 entry file that has changed, we still have to receive the whole RSS file from the server. Today I saw this comment on Slashdot: It would make a lot more sense to have a protocol where you check one file that has a list of links to another XML file, and then the aggregator figures out which of those URLs has NOT been aggregated, then it downloads the other XML file which has the post-specific info, which it proceeds to display. That would save a lot of bandwidth, I'm sure. I'm no RSS/Atom expert, but what would be the implications of splitting up your feed into a number of separate resources? From a weblog point of view, we end up with XML representations of our existing HTML pages, a single XML file for each entry and a XML "homepage" listing the latest entries in chronological order. As far as I'm concerned, if it's good enough for the HTML Web, it should be good enough for the XML/RSS/Atom/whatever Web.

Why Longhorn is a Train Wreck Why Longhorn is Going to Rock On the flipside, it's important to understand that the public still hasn't seen a lot of the cool features that Microsoft will be including in Longhorn. These features will still make for a compelling release, though we may be wondering in late 2006 why it took over 5 years to deliver them. For example, the final Aero Glass user interface is far nicer than anything the company has shown off publicly yet, and will indeed be visually impressive. And there's a lot going on in the digital media space that I can't talk about yet. Beta 1 will have some of this stuff, but Beta 2 will be even more impressive. Alas, that release could drift into early 2006. Microsoft Revenues Disappoint This week, Microsoft reported quarterly earnings of $2.56 billion, over double the amount it earned in the same quarter a year earlier. Revenues were up just 5 percent, however, to $9.62 billion, causing some disappointment in circles where such figures would be disappointing. The problem: Charges related to Microsoft's legal expenses and stock-based compensation caused a hit to the bottom line. And Microsoft's cash cowsWindows and Officesaw sales rise only 3 percent and 2.5 percent, respectively. In the good news department, Microsoft's home and entertainment division, which sells the Xbox, saw revenues rise 12 percent. Meanwhile, mobile and embedded devices rose a whopping 31 percent, thanks to strong demand for Windows Mobile products.
