Mutual Admiration and a Few Jokes
The Correspondence of Harry Truman with Groucho and Harpo Marx
By Raymond H. Geselbracht
Harpo Marx and President Truman chat at Fairfield-Suisun Air Force Base in California, late in the night of October 12, 1950. (NARA, Harry S. Truman Library) Harry Truman's association with the Marx Brothers began at some unrecorded time fairly early in Truman's life. From the time he was a young man in his teens, Truman loved vaudeville. He loved almost every kind of live theater, but his favorite was vaudeville. That meant that he went often to the Orpheum Theatre and the Grand Opera House in Kansas City. "Between the time I was about 16 to 20," Truman said when he was President, "I used to go to every vaudeville show that came to Kansas City at the old Orpheum, and at the Grand." He even ushered for a time at the Orpheum so he could get into the show for free. After he started courting Bess Wallace in 1910, he took her to the vaudeville shows.

I discovered the Marx Brothers at the tender age of thirteen. Very simply, I caught a broadcast of "Duck Soup" on TV one night and it changed my life. Through eighth grade, all through high school and well into college, I remained obsessed with the Marxes. While other kids my age were idolizing sports figures or rock stars, I was hanging posters of the Marxes, buying any books about them, researching old magazine articles at the library, running off to revival houses (in the days just prior to home video), and memorizing all the dialogue from their films. It’s fair to say that because of them, I knew that I would have to be involved with making movies.
In 1978, I was taking film production courses at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA. I remember casually mentioning to my instructor one day that I planned to embark on producing a full-length documentary on the Marxes. I remember him chuckling and telling me that I should probably plan on devoting four years of my life to such a venture. I figured he had a screw loose. How could it possibly take four years to assemble a few film clips, photos, interviews and narration?

Post a job Search: chicagotribune.com Leisure Landmarks Survey missed key buildings, including Marx Brothers house By Nathan Bierma, Tribune staff reporter. Tribune reporter Jeff Long contributed to this story Published January 15, 2003 Groucho Marx slept here. Before he and the other Marx Brothers Harpo, Chico and Zeppo were fooling around in the movies, they were fooling around on Chicago's vaudeville circuit in the 1910s. And they lived at 4512 S. Grand Blvd., in a graystone townhouse that their parents, Samuel and Minnie Marx, bought in 1914. The townhouse, with its latticed balcony and flamboyant turret, still stands proudly along what is now Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. But the Marx Brothers house is not on Chicago's list of 17,371 buildings that are considered architecturally or historically significant.
