One thing about the format of DVD, some studios have used it not only to sell their high profile, big budget films but also to preserve film classics and make them available to a new generation of film enthusiast. Universal has done this with the presentation of five of the best known and loved classics from the Marx Brothers; Duck Soup, Horse Feathers, Monkey Business, Animal Crackers and The Cocoanuts. Although the earliest of these films are now seventy five years hold they still will make you laugh out loud. After all, this is what makes for a classic film, a timeless quality that can transcend the generations. A little note for the younger viewers of these films, try to put aside the slick production qualities that you have be privileged to grow up with, these films represent the very beginnings of film as an American media. ‘Animal Crackers’, like ‘Cocoanuts’, was taken from a stage production made famous by the Marx Brothers. Here they take on the world of adveture with Groucho as a famous African explorer and the search for a missing painting. Once again the jokes are non stop, everything from quick one liners to drawn out series of soliloquies, usually provided by Groucho. Released in 1930 the cast and crew where still very much on the learning curve. The production values where primitive, even crude. No one had yet gotten the hang of the difference between the stage and a movie set. ‘Monkey Business’, made in 1931 was the beginning of a bit more focus for the Brothers. There is a slicker feel to the film. This was the first opus created by them exclusively for film and it shows. They seemed to have finally abandoned the need to recreate their stage success and focus on the new art of movie making. This film also has one of the most classic and often imitated routines, the classic ship’s state room gag where it seems that everyone on board winds up in a single, small cabin. This film is often considered to be the best of their body of work; it is funny almost on a gut level.

Zeppo left the team in 1934 and Gummo left after their stage days. The Marx brothers became famous for their zany antics in vaudeville, Broadway, and motion pictures. They starred in The Cocoanuts (1925; film 1929) and Animal Crackers (1928; film 1930), and A Night at the Opera is considered a classic by film historians. Other memorable films include Monkey Business and Duck Soup . Later Groucho established a solo career as host of the successful radio and television quiz show "You Bet Your Life," where he specialized in quick wit and insults.

One of the silver screen's zaniest comic teams, the four Marx Brothers cultivated their chaotic comic skills on the vaudeville and Broadway stage in the 1920s before making more than a dozen film comedies primarily for Paramount and MGM in the 1930s and '40s. Though often lacking a coherent or even comprehensible plotline, the Marx Brothers' movies combine chaotic physical comedy and sight gags with merry melodies and frequently irreverent (even risqué) dialogue to create a comic cinematic experience that is one of a kind. Their films were not the most financially successful comedies ever made, nor did the brothers enjoy the more widespread appeal of more sedate comedians, but their screen antics earned them an honorary Oscar in 1974 (presented to Groucho after the deaths of Harpo and Chico) and provide a unique insight into the brand of vaudeville humor that reigned supreme in the United States in the years before talking pictures. The Marx Brothers (left to right): Chico (Leonard), Groucho (Julius), Harpo (Adolph), and Zeppo (Herbert) a fifth brother, Gummo (Milton), left the act before it came to Hollywood but later became a talent agent.

Great Feed for

By Dan Gheno
(Originally Published in The Santa Barbara News and Review, June 10, 1977) When asked if he would like to write for the Marx Brothers, Pulitzer playwright George S. Kaufman muttered, “I’d as soon write for the Barbary Apes.” Despite this intransigent attitude, Kaufman finally broke down and wrote two very successful Broadway plays for them, Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers. Both of these plays were converted into the profitable silver screen format, the latter now playing at the Magic Lantern. For both Kaufman and his part-time collaborator, Morrie Ryskind, it was heart-rending to watch the Marx Brothers brutally deface the script with improvised jokes and extraneous skits. But the rewards were great, both financially and artistically. Kaufman later said he learned a valuable lesson from the brothers — how to let go of jokes that don’t work. While “Animal Crackers” was still on the road, Ryskind sat in the audience and noted which jokes garnered the least guffaws. Ryskind then pruned these from the script, when he adapted it for Paramount films in 1930.

I don't mean the present Prince of Wales; one of the old Wales, and believe me when I say Wales, I mean Wales. I know a whale when I see one. Did you say your room is three eighteen? You know I am the proprietor of this hotel and I have a passkey for every room in it.
Mrs. Potter:
Passkey?
Hammer:
Passkey-that's Russian for pass-you know they passkey down the streetskey. ... Aw, if we could find a little bungalow-eh? Oh, of course, I know where we could find one, but maybe the people wouldn't get out. But if we could find a nice little empty bungalow just for me and you, where we could bill and cow, no I meant we could bull and cow.
Mrs. Potter:
Do you know what you are trying to say?
Hammer:
Yes, it is not what I'm thinking of. What I meant was, if we had a nice little bungalow and you was on the inside and I was on the outside trying to get in and me inside trying to get out or, no you're inside out and I was upside-I'll tell you, if you don't hear from me by next Friday, the whole thing's off!

In a pivotal scene near the end of Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters Duck Soup , the Marx Brothers' wildly funny comedy from 1933. Sitting there in the dark, with the Brothers' masterpiece flickering before him, Allen receives an epiphany. Is existence really so awful as long as it has the Marx Brothers in it? It's an affirmation of life that would probably cause Groucho to retort with a lethal wisecrack on the spot, though as epiphanies go it's one of the most inarguable you can find. Throughout the Great Depression, the comedians known as Groucho, Harpo, and Chico (ably supported by youngest brother Zeppo) were welcome explosions of insanity in a brutally sane world. Now after 75 years they can still lift us out of our own depressions, great or otherwise. By the time they made their first movie

A Review of The Unknown Marx Brothers
by Brad Jeske Many consider the comedy team of Groucho, Chico, Harpo, Zeppo, Gummo, and Zeppo to be one of greatest of all time. With their beginnings in Vaudeville then onto Broadway, radio and movies, the Marx Brothers were one of the most influential comedy troupes. But there is so much more to this comedy team and zany personalities that these men possess. Now Phillips Media has put their life and careers on CD-ROM in their new title: The Unknown Marx Brothers. This retrospective two-disc CD uncovers some fascinating insight through the use of film clips and interview with family and colleagues. Even some rare film footage is included in this collectable program. This CD breaks down their careers into three sections: The Early Years, The Movie Years and The Later Years. Also added is a two hour documentary that covers most of the database of movies and interviews contained on the CD, and takes you from their childhood years, clear through till their final movie. The Early Years you will learn about the brothers and the developments of their personality, their mother Minnie who was so much a inspiration behind them. She even changed her last name and became their first agent/manager, getting them their first start in Vaudeville. And what happened to the other brothers, Zeppo, and Gummo. Zeppo appeared later on and was influential in getting them from going from Vaudeville to Broadway.

The Charge "I married your mother because I wanted children. Imagine how disappointed I was when you arrived!"—Groucho Marx, Horse Feathers Opening Statement They are, in effect, the true great grandfathers of modern day comedy. When The Marx Brothers burst upon the scene in 1929 with their first feature length film The Cocoanuts , little did unsuspecting audiences know that the threesome (and sometimes foursome) would forever change the face of cinematic comedy. To commemorate absolutely nothing (Groucho would be proud), Universal has released five of the Marx Brothers' most popular comedies on DVD in a six-disc set. Facts of the Case The Cocoanuts
Mr. Hammer (Groucho) runs a bankrupt Florida hotel called The Cocoanuts. He'll try anything to make some money, even cozy up to rich Mrs. Potter (Margaret Dumont). But his money-making scheme is in danger of being sabotaged when two con men (Chico and Harpo) blow into town and turn everything upside down! Animal Crackers
Grouch stars as Captain Spaulding, the famous African explorer whose return is being celebrated with a gala party thrown at the house of the wealthy Mrs. Rittenhouse (Margaret Dumont). A valuable painting is stolen and Signore Ravelli (Chico) and the Professor (Harpo), along with Spaulding's stenographer, Jamison (Zeppo), all pitch in and try to help Spaulding recover the rare work of art.

It's been over half a century since the Marx Brothers last performed as a group on film in Love Happy (1949, UA), although they did all appear, but not together, in The Story of Mankind (1957, WB). Their humour was a unique blend of slapstick, satire, wordplay both sophisticated and crude, and occasional just general silliness that seemed to have appeal across a wide range of society because of the many different levels at which it could be enjoyed. The recent AFI list of the 100 best comedy films, whatever one may think of it, did recognize the merit of the group's work by including five of their efforts, with Duck Soup (1933, Paramount) being highest ranked at #5. ABOUT THE RADIO SHOW: Comedy , Groucho Marx (often) The Marx Brothers used radio as an adjunct to their blossoming movie career. The Brothers came roaring out of vaudeville with a combination of sight gags and wacky wordplay that more than filled the silver screen. Nat Perrin headed a great comedy writing team gave them scripts that made up for the lack of visuals. The Marx Brothers had occasional shows on radio. "Beagle, Shyster and Beagle," then "Flywheel, Shyster, and Flywheel," was about lawyers, of course. Groucho, the "affront" man for the team, played Waldorf T. Beagle, attorney at law, unless he took lunch, at which point he was attorney at lunch. And so on. Chico played Emmanuel Ravelli, Beagle's assistant. Many of the routines from the lawyer show were used in "Duck Soup." Later in 1934, they had a show called the Marx of Time, and Grouch played Ulysses H. Drivel, a reporter. Chico was Penelli. It seems every character Chico played had to end in a vowel. But then, Chico always played it Chico's way. Harpo's career on radio was severely hampered, for obvious reasons.
