How exciting to think that nearly 70 years after their initial release, two of the most beloved classic comedy films of the fabulous Marx Brothers have been re-released in London this summer. Both A Night at the Opera (1935) and A Day at the Races (1937) opened at Riverside Studios on the 5th of July, and will also be screening at cinemas around the UK in the coming weeks. Surely, Groucho, Harpo, and Chico Marx must all be individually smiling from somewhere above to find that the best of their film work not only lives on, but continues to delight movie theatre audiences. These two particular films, which were - respectively - The Marx Brothers' sixth and seventh silver screen hits, not only represent them at the height of their box-office success, they were made at a uniquely pivotal turning point in their film careers. Few modern fans realize that in addition to the 13 movies they left behind, they had once been a very successful act on the Vaudeville, Broadway, and West End stage. Also, only the most die-hard followers know that in the years prior to these two films, there had once been five Marx siblings in the act.

(MUSIC) VOICE ONE: I’m Mary Tillotson. VOICE TWO: And I’m Steve Ember with the VOA Special English program, PEOPLE IN AMERICA. Today we tell about the Marx Brothers. They made many funny movies in the nineteen-thirties and nineteen-forties that are still popular today. (MUSIC) VOICE ONE: There were five Marx Brothers. The most famous were Julius, Leonard and Adolph. They were born in New York City between eighteen eighty-six and eighteen-ninety. Their father made clothing. Their mother wanted them to become performers. Julius, Leonard and Adolph started performing when they were children. Along with their two brothers, they performed in stage shows called vaudeville in New York. They sang songs, danced and told jokes. Julius, Leonard and Adolph Marx began making funny movies in nineteen twenty-nine. They changed their first names. Julius became Groucho. Leonard became Chico. Adolph became Harpo. Another brother, Herbert, appeared in the first five Marx Brothers movies. He was called Zeppo. He did not play a funny man like the other three. He played a good-looking young man.

A Tribute to The Marx Brothers
The Marx Brothers made a dozen films together from 1929 until 1946:
  • The Cocoanuts
  • Animal Crackers
  • Monkey Business
  • Horse Feathers
  • Duck Soup
  • A Night At The Opera
  • A Day At The Races
  • Room Service
  • At The Circus
  • Go West
  • The Big Store
  • A Night In Casablanca
The "essential" Marx Brothers consisted of Groucho (Julius), Chico (Leonard), and Harpo (Adolph), who appeared in all the films. Gummo (Milton) was the original straight man in the Vaudeville act (though never in films), followed by Zeppo (Herbert), who actually appeared as that character only in Monkey Business (though he appeared in other roles in four more films). Both of them eventually left the act to become agents. Zeppo was also a well-known inventor.

They were known by their professional names: Chico Marx (Leonard, 1891-1961), Gummo Marx (Milton, 1892-1977), Harpo Marx (Arthur, 1893-1964), Groucho Marx (Julius, 1895-1977), and Zeppo Marx (Herbert, 1901-1979). The brothers began their careers in vaudeville as the Nightingales. Later the four oldest brothers appeared with their mother and aunt as the Six Mascots, then billed themselves as the Marx Brothers. (Zeppo, the youngest, replaced Gummo in the act before the group became stars on Broadway and in motion pictures.) The brothers appeared in a number of film comedies noted chiefly for their zany sight gags. Such films include Animal Crackers Horse Feathers (1932), and

The Marx Brothers - MovieActors.com
A wildly popular comedy group, The Marx Brothers uniquely wacky style of comedy kept their audience in stitches in the 1930's. The Marx Brothers were, originally, Groucho (Julius Marx), Chico (Leonard Marx), Harpo (Adolph Marx), Gummo (Milton Marx), and Zeppo (Herbert Marx). Gummo bailed out early on. Zeppo played a straight man/romantic lead in five films, then exited. Groucho, Chico, and Harpo endured as the Marx Brothers we know and love. Their defining roles would be in " Duck Soup ." Notable films include "Animal Crackers," "Horse Feathers," and " A Night at the Opera ." In the 1950's, Groucho had a hit as a solo performer in the TV quiz show, "You Bet Your Life." http://www.who2.com/grouchomarx.html
GROUCHO MARX Comedian Julius "Groucho" Marx was the most famous of the Marx Brothers, a landmark comedy team of vaudeville and the movies. The Marx Brothers' witty, irreverent wordplay and clever physical gags made them some of the world's biggest movie stars during their heyday in the 1920s and 1930s. Groucho was the ringleader in the group's routines, cracking wise and waggling his eyebrows over his signature greasepaint moustache. His brothers included fellow stars Chico (Leonard Marx, 1886-1961) and Harpo (Adolph Marx, 1888-1964), plus two brothers who made more rare appearances: Gummo (Milton Marx, 1897-1977) and Zeppo (Herbert Marx, 1901-1979). The Marx Brothers' movies included Animal Crackers Duck Soup (1932) and A Night At the Opera (1935); often the actress Margaret Dumont served as a stuffy foil for their antics. Groucho became a solo success when he hosted the game show You Bet Your Life on radio and television from 1947-1961. In 1974 he received a special Academy Award for lifetime achievement.
Extra credit : Harpo was the brother who didn't speak on-screen; Chico often played a comical Italian... Among those who wrote routines for the Marx Brothers were S.J. Perelman and George S.
