The two trios of comedy legends fight it out for the last lifeboat on the Titanic. humor

World Wide Web Fights presents
The Scenario
R.M.S. Titanic , immense yet graceful, knifes effortlessly through the waters of the North Atlantic. The of high society majestically walk her decks and stare in shock as a trio of scruffy, shifty fellows scamper through their midst. "I think we've shaken the boat dicks," the lead fellow says, a cigar clamped between his fingers. "The nerve of those fellows, thinking just because they built this ship that we should pay them to come aboard." "You got-a that right, boss," the second one says in a vaguely Italian accent. "With all those tickets cost, they better be showing at least a double-feature." His curly-blond sidekick concurs with a hearty honk "Well, time to duck into our accommodations, before they duck us in the Atlantic." He lopes in a long-legged crouch to the nearest lifeboat, and throws back the cover. Already inside are three other stowaways, snoring in three-part harmony. The middle one mutters "Spread out" in his sleep, and shoves the other two aside, catching the bald one with an elbow in the nostril. The victim briefly wakes up, then closes his eyes and opens them again. "Hey, Moe! Hey, Larry! Wake up! We got interlopers!"

THEIR APPROACH TO COMEDY: ANARCHY, LIGHTNING SPEED, AND MUSICAL NUMBERS , MIXED WITH AN ANYTHING GOES APPROACH, TOTALLY REVOLUTIONIZED THE FACE OF AMERICAN COMEDY. BY THE TIME THEY MADE IT BIG ON BROADWAY IN THE PLAY "I'LL SAY SHE IS" IN 1924, THEY HAD BEEN PERFORMING TOGETHER ON THE VAUDEVILLE CIRCUIT FOR 20 YEARS.
THE FOUR OLDEST BROTHERS, "GUMMO" (MILTON MARX), "CHICO" (LEONARD MARX), "HARPO" (ADOLPH ARTHUR MARX) AND "GROUCHO" (JULIUS HENRY MARX), HAD STARTED OFF AS SINGERS, BUT GRADUALLY SWITCHED TO COMEDY BY THE TIME THEY APPEARED ON BROADWAY. BY 1929, GUMMO HAD RETIRED FROM THE ACT AND WAS REPLACED BY BABY BROTHER "ZEPPO" (HERBERT MARX). THE BROTHERS MADE THEIR FIRST FILM, "THE COCOANUTS" IN 1929, BASED ON THEIR SECOND BROADWAY HIT. FROM THE START, EACH BROTHER HAD HIS OWN SCREEN PERSONA. GROUCHO WAS THE WISE-CRACKING, FAST-TALKING BROTHER WITH HIS GREASEPAINT MOUSTACHE AND EYEBROWS WHO TENDED TO BE ON THE

The Marx Brothers Buy From Art.com The Marx Brothers were the original madcap comedy team, who appeared at the beginning of the sound era in film allowing us to continue enjoying their comedy for many years. Use the links to the left to read their biographies, as well as reviews of their most popular movies. The four brothers (Gummo, Groucho Chico and Harpo ) were given their famous stage names in a card game in vaudeville. Gummo, who retired from the stage before the brothers began making their movies, received his nickname courtesy of his gum soled shoes. Stories differ on the origin of Groucho's nickname some say it was because of the "grouch bag" that he wore around his neck to keep his valuables in, and others say it was because of his petulant personality. Chico (pronounced "Chick-o") was due to his habit of chasing after young ladies, or "chicks" in the slang of that day. Harpo received his nickname in the most straightforward way, due to his playing the harp as part of their stage act. Youngest brother Zeppo received his from his brothers, after a comic strip character, Mr. Zippo.

The Marx Brothers
Groucho Marx (Julius Henry)
Born: Oct 2, 1890 in New York City, NY
Died: Aug 19, 1977 in Los Angeles Groucho was born Julius Henry Marx on Oct 2 1890 in New York. He was the third of the five surving sons of Sam and Minnie Marx. He was the first of the brothers to start stage career aged 15 in an act called The Leroy Trio Other acts followed, but none of them was a great success. Twice the other members of the act disappeared overnight and left him penniless in a town far away from home. When his Brothers came on stage the finally has a success with the musical comedy called I'll Say She Is . It was at one of the performances of this show that Groucho got his painted moustache. He arrived late at the theater and used greasepaint to create a moustache. He found this so much easier than a glued on moustache that he insisted on using this technique from then on. I'll Say She Is is was followed by two more Broadway hits - The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers . The latter of which has the character of Captian Spaulding which remained (with the song Hooray for Captain Spaulding ) a trademark for Groucho for the rest of his life.
