Shopping happily without a car
// posted by Martino @ 4:26 PM Comments: Nice. Toronto definitely has a huge number of utilitarian cyclists. I'm still amazed sometimes when I see little mini-critical-masses downtown. Beautiful. It's fun seeing shoppers on their bikes. They ride up to where they need to be, lock up, and go inside. The car drivers zoom around fighting for on-street parking (e.g. Bloor St.), then block half the road for a while as they try to back into a space that just opened up. They seem way more frustrated than this woman and her bike with flowers. Cheers

LINER NOTES for SOLO ARTIST CD Terry Silverlight is a monster talent. He's a powerhouse virtuoso on the
drums, and an arranger, composer, and producer on a par with the great
innovators of today's music, and this release is long overdue proof of
these statements. "Where has this guy been?," you might ask - "why don't I
already know him better?" Good question - and the answer lies in the
character of this guy behind the drums.
It's not often that one encounters unselfishness in the music business -
performers tend to be a relatively ego-driven bunch, driven to achieve,
competitive in a ruthless marketplace, looking for a break, trying to get
their stuff over. Terry is the exception to this rule. He believes in the
value of service to others, and that by trying to bring positive energy into a given situation he's helping to make the world a better place. I've never heard him put anybody down, or complain about the music, or musicians around him, or working conditions, or any of those everyday things that people in general tend to focus on and grouse about. Terry's truly an

In the mid1920's, the first notable women bowlers were; Mrs. Brewster, Martha Rompf, Lena Kratz, Nina Speickoff, Dora Knaus and Elsie Schramm. They would bowl under the banner of "Bernie Maurer's Ladies Team".
During the early 1920's, there were several bowling alleys built in the Syracuse area. They included aix alleys at the City Club on South Warren st., six alleys at the Chamber of Congress, American Legion, The Eagles Club, the Polish Community Home, Sacred Heart Athletic Club, Solvay Recreation and Eastwood Sports Center.
In 1923, the readers of the "Herald" cast their votes for the areas first all-star bowling teams. The teams for the 1923-24 season were as follows:
First Team
Second Team
Third Team

Prior to the 1925 season, Syracuse belonged to the Atlantic Coast Bowling Alliance. In 1925, Syracuse became a member of the American Bowling Congress, and the Syracuse Bowling Association was formed. The "Herald" all-star team was,

When Syracuse first began bowling under the rules of the American Bowling Congress in the 1925-26, they patterned their by - laws after the Buffalo Bowling Association, which was already a member of the A.B.C.. About Us
The bakery started in 1927 as a small pie factory in the
garage behind a restaurant owned by Mr. Vic Martino,
Sr. In later years, a Burbank High School student
named Amerio Corradi, a friend of Vic Martino, Jr., took
a job there washing pie tins. A tiny pie shop in the

Songs We Know
Fred Hersch / Bill Frisell
(Nonesuch) The result is the marvelous new Songs We Know , a fine song cycle of contemporary jazz standards, played with a laid-back ease that only two such sharp and original stylists can bring to such well-known music. Frisell and Hersch concur that the session could have gone many different ways, but it was their mutual love for the standards, with their open palette of simplicity, history and potential for new interpretation that lead to the inspired sounds heard on Songs We Know Plays Monk and discs and, even more substantially, on his jazz-the-classics Angel recordings. The eleven Songs We Know have many highlights. Chief among the pleasures to be heard here include the playful and unusually funky "There Is No Greater Love," where Frisell’s textbook witticisms engage with Hersch’s perky, almost abstract commentary. Likewise, Antonio Carlos Jobim’s "Wave" is creative music at its most expressive: where Hersch’s piano provides the soft undercurrent while Frisell’s sprite, melodic tones carry the tide in, conveying the hypnotic beauty of the sea that Jobim intended. The two engage most spectacularly, and so nearly at odds, on "What is This Thing Called Love," where the metallic Frisell frolics in the warm cushions Hersch’s block chords provide. Then, the pair commiserates romantically (a Hersch specialty) on the lullaby-like (a Frisell specialty) "Someday My Prince Will Come."
