Biography Center Theme Vilma Martinez (b.1945) Latina civil rights activist Vilma Martinez first felt racial prejudice at an early age. She achieved a stellar academic record in her junior high school, yet her junior high guidance counselor forwarded her records to the vocational high school because he thought Vilma would “feel more comfortable” there. Vilma Martinez has been battling stereotypes and racial prejudice ever since. The fact that she is a Mexican-American woman was used to dismiss and dissuade her when she applied for college, and then for law school, and even for her first job after graduating from Columbia Law School. Determined to persevere in her personal vision, Martinez won every battle. In 1973 Vilma Martinez lobbied to get the top post of the fledgling Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) even though her friends and colleagues tried to discourage her. They told her that at twenty-nine she was too young and that being female would be another liability. They said the job would be too demanding and that the Nixon Supreme Court was loaded with conservative judges unsympathetic to MALDEF’s efforts. She was determined, unrelenting and ultimately successful. In her nine years as MALDEF’s president and general counsel, Vilma Martinez turned the tiny civil rights organization, supported by only a modest start-up foundation grant, into a nationally significant institution that gives real political and legal voice to those suffering from racial discrimination.

Padre Martinez, eldest son of Severino Martinez A portion of the santo collection at the Hacienda The Hacienda de los Martinez is one of the few northern New Mexico style, late Spanish Colonial period, "Great Houses" remaining in the American Southwest. Built in 1804 by Severino Martin (later changed to Martinez), this fortress-like building with massive adobe walls became an important trade center for the northern boundary of the Spanish Empire. The Hacienda was the final terminus for the Camino Real which connected northern New Mexico to Mexico City. The Hacienda also was the headquarters for an extensive ranching and farming operation. Severino and his wife Maria del Carmel Santistevan Martinez raised six children in the Hacienda. Their eldest son was the famous Padre Antonio Martinez who battled the French Bishop Lamy to preserve the Hispanic character of the Catholic Church in the territory. The Padre was a dynamic social reformer who created the first co-educational school in New Mexico and brought the first printing press to Taos. After Mexican Independence from Spain in 1821, Severino Martinez and his family became active in trading with the Americans who were bringing badly needed trade goods in by the Santa Fe Trail.
