Jimmy Martin, 1928 - 2005
Posted at 11:25 in . Whenever a bluegrass music legend is scheduled to perform in the area, Chris always starts bugging me to go; after all, he says, they may not be with us much longer. And so usually we go, and we always are glad we did. Unlike in some musical genres, bluegrass musicians age very gracefully, and often they continue to improve over time (in their performance skills, anywayjust about every legend has recorded his most interesting music in the first twenty years). And bluegrass audiences are very much aware of and enthusiastic about the older performers; quite often the biggest draw at a festival will be someone like Ralph Stanley or Larry Sparks or J.D. Crowe, each of whom has been performing for more than forty years. When Jimmy Martin appeared in Bristol last year Chris bugged me about going, but it conflicted with an obligation we couldn't cancel. And now Jimmy Martin is gone . He's been in very bad health since the beginning of the year, and though for the last month or so he had been improving, he suddenly took a turn for the worse in the past week. Pete Wernick had been trying to get to Nashville to visit with him, and he encouraged us to think about visiting as well. We might have if there had been more time. Jimmy Martin had a relationship with bluegrass music similar to the one Thomas Paine had with the founding of America; central, seminal figures who for various reasons were never welcomed into the inner circle of Founding Fathers. For Paine, it was his outspoken atheism; for Martin, it was mostly his cocky attitude. He was very difficult to work with, demanding, often very drunk at the wrong times, and generally unreliable; all this increased in his later years.

DAVE'S DIARY - 12 JUNE2005 - JIMMY MARTIN OBITUARY JIMMY MARTIN RIP AT 77 BORN SNEEDVILLE, TENNESSEE - AUGUST 10, 1927.
DIED NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - MAY 10, 2005. LAID HIMSELF TO REST

Jimmy Martin in 1958 When rebel bluegrass king Jimmy Martin died of bladder cancer at 77 in the Alive Hospice in Nashville he had long shared a snubbing with Hank Williams.
But unlike Hank, who was also shunned by the Grand Ole Opry, he created his resting place well in advance.
Martin designed his own tombstone that was placed in the Spring Hill Cemetery in the Nashville suburb of Madison, Tennessee, more than five years ago. The tombstone Martin erected for himself bears his photo and is topped by the legend "Now Sings in Heaven."
And it's engraved with nearly every one of his achievements including his induction into the International Bluegrass Music Association's Hall of Honour in 1995. Martin was thrilled to find a plot near Country Music Hall of Fame legend Roy Acuff and delighted in the notion the ''King of Country'' and the ''King of Bluegrass'' would rest in eternal proximity.

Martin had been fighting cancer for several weeks. On May 12 he was transported from the hospital to Hospice care. Jimmy Martin, known as "The King of Bluegrass" and "Mr. Good 'N Country," was born in Han*censored* County, Sneedville, Tennessee. His lifelong dream came true when he joined Bill Monroe in 1949 as lead singer and emcee. Jimmy worked with Bill Monroe for five years, helping him write and record such high lonesome classics as "Uncle Pen," "The Little Girl and the Dreadful Snake," and "I'll Meet You in Church Sunday Morning (which Jimmy actually sang tenor to Bill's lead)". The documentary premiered April 29 at the 34th Annual Nashville Film Festival in Nashville, Tennessee. The film was produced by George Goehl, a community organizer based in Chicago.
