"You Don't Know My Mind" ... and "Guitar Pickin' President" ..etc. WE never really got there, for like all Elvis imitators sound like each other and not Elvis, we were missing the one thing all those who try to make music like Jimmy did were missing, the secret ingredient: Jimmy Martin. Although , we did our imitation Jimmy as a duo in clubs around the mid-'60's, Orange County in those days (in the months preceeding the forming of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band); his music was so powerful that even our comparitively limp versions won crowds over whenever we played it. Good and Country.. if you wanted to know what good country was, listen to that album. It was what led Linda Ronstadt to say around 1971 "Jimmy Martin is my favorite singer!" It was his sound that lead off and powered the Circle album. It was he that made 'bluegrass' come alive in a way that I missed almost any time I saw west coast bluegrassers head in to another oftne limp by comparison interpretation of 'how it should be'. Maybe that's how it was for them with their ernest but not quite 'there' homage paid to him, but the real Jimmy was the real music. Just listen to the records. Don't bother comparing, because you really can't.

Born: Died: As a Blue Grass Boy: 22-year old Jimmy Martin auditioned for Bill Monroe in the October of 1949. He was hired and began performing immediately with the Shenandoah Valley Trio, opening shows for the Blue Grass Boys. Around Christmas, Mac Wiseman gave his notice and Jimmy took over as guitarist and lead singer of the Blue Grass Boys. Though he left and returned to the band several times over the next few years, he appeared on most of Monroe's recording sessions between February of 1950 and January of 1954, singing lead on such classics as "Uncle Pen", "Memories of You", "Letter from my Darling", "On and On" and "The Little Girl and the Dreadful Snake". Recording Sessions: Before and After: Jimmy had played with Bobby and Sonny Osborne in between stints with the Blue Grass Boys; in November 1954 they recorded together, under the band name the Sunny Mountain Boys. They soon went their separate ways, Bobby and Sonny as the Osborne Brothers, and Jimmy keeping the Sunny Mountain Boys name, which he continues to use today. An especially memorable Sunny Mountain Boys lineup was that of the late 50s, featuring Paul Williams and J.D. Crowe. Martin's best known songs include "Hit Parade of Love", "Ocean of Diamonds", "Rock Hearts", "Sophronie", and his theme song "Sunny Side of the Mountain".

Biography and family recollections Biography of Jimmy Mesene Born in either 1907 or 1908, Demetre Mesene (Jimmy’s real name as given on his 1943 marriage certificate), was the son of John Mesene, a ship owner. Sources vary as to his country of birth with equal support for either Greece or Malta. The 1943 marriage certificate was for Jimmy’s second marriage, to a Hilda Martin.
