Dialogue Skills Q. What do you do when you entertain to initiate good or friendly conversations? A. I become curious about their lives. I ask about their families. I try and listen very seriously. I am not a good listener so I have to concentrate on what they are saying . When they see I am really interested, they will go beyond the niceties and I will find some mutual or interesting point to talk together about. I was told by a Turkmen that talking about family establishes a friendly relationship. I believe it may be true that talking about family is a very good opener in most places. What do you think? My daughter taught me something. She always compliments women on their jewelry or appearance, or something in their home, to create an opening for conversation. I have found that this works very well.

I meant to post this a long time ago, but just spotted the bookmark I made and realized I forgot. Mason and I thought about renting a beach house for a few days last Christmas, somewhere along the Gulf Coast, and this came from my online research. It took me a minute to figure out it was a joke. Face the Fetus
Interesting column in Slate today about the Unborn Victims of Violence Act: "Advocates of UVVA say it won't affect abortion rights because it stipulates, 'Nothing in this section shall be construed to permit the prosecution … of any person for conduct relating to an abortion for which the consent of the pregnant woman, or a person authorized by law to act on her behalf, has been obtained.' But the exemption is plainly illogical. Imagine a federal ban on gay marriage that stipulated, 'Nothing in this section shall apply to a daughter of the Vice President of the United States.' A gay marriage is a gay marriage. A child is a child. Once the embryo is defined as a child, and killing it is defined as killing a child, abortion at any stage of pregnancy becomes murder—immediately in theory, and eventually in law." Terri Schiavo Case
As I watch the Terri Schiavo Case unfold, I am in absolute awe at the number of people who wish to interfere. There has never been any shortage of busybodies in Washington. This is the ultimate dichotomy for conservatives. If they uphold the parents in regard to the saving of a daughters "life", then by inverse action they undermine the marital rights of the husband to make medical decisions for his disabled wife in the process. In order to uphold the sanctity of life, they are forced to undermine the sanctity of a marriage, and vice versa. They are making hamburger of sacred cows in the process. If I were Terri Schiavo, I would not want to live in a vegetative state and fed through a tube and hooked up to all sorts of machines. As we debate the definition of life and death we should contemplate the necessity of human dignity on that formula. If it were me laying there helpless, I would deem it to be an act of kindness to pull the plug and disconnect the tubes. I personally deem it better to rest in peaceful eternity than to exist in a medical hell. The matter is not only a medical decision, but also a spiritual decision, that is properly made by a spouse in times of profound medical catastrophe. It is a good thing that Terri Schiavo is not in full possession of her faculties, or else she would no doubt immediately die of humiliation as the result of having her personal tragedy made so profoundly public as to overcome the memories of the vibrant woman she once was.

Alberta, Canada When did you first become interested in science? I have always been curious of the world around me. It wasn't enough to know how it worked; I wanted to know WHY it worked. Anything I could get a hold of, I'd tinker with it. At the age of 7, I knew I wanted to be a scientist. I had nothing specific in mind, except that I thought the equipment in a chemistry lab was pretty cool. I read many books during my childhood, both fiction and non-fiction. At what age did you know you wanted to become an engineer? What inspired you to think about that as a possible career? I wanted to become an engineer at age 13. What sparked my passion in technology was when I watched the movie, Apollo 13. This was about the Apollo mission to the moon, where a life-threatening accident happened onboard. The engineers on the ground had to be extremely ingenious to bring the crippled spacecraft and crew home. It was at this point when I became interested in space exploration. To build spacecraft going to other worlds would be an awesome job to do. You would essentially be working in the high-tech field, creating never-before-made machines. And these machines that I helped build would gather planetary facts that no one had known before! What could be more exciting than that? It has always been my credo to do science just for the pure joy of learning.
