Originally cast as the dashing hero because of his good looks, March's later roles took advantage of his powerful screen presence and his ability to express the weaknesses in seemingly self-assured professional men. His films include Anna Karenina Death of a Salesman Inherit the Wind (1960), and The Iceman Cometh (1973). Fredric March - More Than an Icon
by Steven Mason Nineteen ninety-seven marked the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Fredric March. But who noticed? March, who once upon a time was widely considered America's finest actor, now occupies a place in the national memory roughly equivalent to that of Conway Tearle.
For four decades, March held quite a different position, enjoying an equally exalted degree of stardom on both stage and screen, with two Tonys and two Oscars to prove it. He was the customary object of critical acclaim (even James Agee allowed that he was "very good indeed") and was consistently popular with movie audiences and theatergoers in a remarkably wide variety of roles. Why, then, in an age when "legendary" status is laughably granted to some of the most mediocre performers of the century, has March been left out? His career towers above most others, and it certainly is worth remembering.
In 1946, he did what was generally considered his finest picture, The Best Years of Our Lives. Under William Wyler's masterful direction, March and his costars somehow managed to sum up the experience of an entire generation. March created a strong and insightful portrait of an ex-Army sergeant trying to resume a normal life after years of combat duty. His complex portrait of a man disgusted by civilian indifference to the problems of veterans, and beset by guilt over his own relative well being, earned him his second Oscar.
