Lata Mangeshkar The nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar, is a living legend. The number of persons who achieve the star-status of a legend in their lifetime may be counted on one's fingers. Indians can be truly proud of the fact that our land has produced one such person in Lata Mangeshkar. Lata was born on September 28, 1929, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Since Dinanath was also an amateur astrologer, he christened his newly born daughter Hema, as per the date and time of her birth. he however, would prefer to call her Hridya. later on the family members began calling her Lata. The family in which Lata was born provided her all the propitious environs to turn into a singer. She was groomed to be the one right from the beginning. She learnt classical music first from her father and then from Ustad Amaan Khan Bhendibazarwale. Thereafter she also became the pupil of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali who trained her. In her childhood she was very much fascinated by the voice and the singing style of the renowned singer Kundan Lal Sehgal. Another singer who tremendously impressed her in the beginning and who ultimately became her close friend was Noor Jehan. A born artist she mastered the art of classical singing. At the age of nine she presented the first classical music recital before a huge crowd. Though her thorough training in classical music could have made her a great classical singer, the charm and appeal of the playback singing enchanted her.
