Bronze Bust
This bronze bust of composer Mahler was sculptured by Rodin giving insight into the character of Gustav Mahler. Mahler sat for the portrait in Rodin's studio in 1909, but left before it was completed. A perfect choice for any composer, conductor or lover of opera and song. Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
Gustav Mahler was the greatest musical genius ever living. Although - besides many songs - he has written only one symphony, this enormous work, consisting of eleven single symphonies, is unique in musical creation; since Mahler - although younger than e. g. Mozart - died much too young only 51 years old, his creation remained uncompleted, but still the symphonic work Mahler left to posterity is far more rich and varied than anything composers like Mozart, Beethoven or Wagner wrote - it is a mirror of world's history, of nature, of life itself, from the very beginning until the apocalyptic catastrophe, in all its contradictions, its breaks, its beauty, its cruelty, its love, its grieves. May many other music lovers and critics look at Mahler's symphonies as different, compact unities, for me they are as well as for Eliahu Inbal one tale with eleven chapters. It's only natural that every chapter is unlike the other for they describe many different events and states of nature and human life; still they belong inseparably together, they develop from the beginning until the end, one part cannot exist without the other. Nowadays, nobody will doubt of Mahler's importance as a composer; during his time, he met hostility and was very contested in this respect even if he had a great reputation as conductor all over the world. Unyielding regarding fidelity to musical works, today for us a matter of course, and severe against the vanities of the artists he worked with, the musicians and singers feared but respected him. Mahler made musical history by proclaiming the idea of the integral art work in the opera: In his opinion, music, acting, directing, stage set and illumination were inseparable, he conducted epoch-making performances in Vienna under the influence of Art Nouveau artists like

30. The Gustav Mahler Virtual Shrine
Personal testimonials.
http://www.visi.com/~mick/shrine.html
Welcome to the Gustav Mahler Virtual Shrine
Gustav Mahler achieved in his short life an unprecedented synthesis of music, philosophy, psychology, and experience, in the process leaving us a legacy that is every bit as timely and wonderful today as when he was alive. Mahler's contemporaries, even some who did not appreciate his achievements, compared his sacrifices and tribulations to those of medieval saints. The analogy is a good one and, like Mahler's music itself, has held up well over the years: his work has given comfort, spiritual nourishment, and hope to four generations. Brother Glenn wonders: Greetings, fellow Mahler fans. Perhaps this subject is not new here, but I had heard a rumor a years ago that Mahler was among a handful of prominent musicians around the turn of the century who were engaged to make piano rolls for player pianos. This does not sound like something he would do, but if anyone out there has any information on such a thing, I would be terribly grateful to hear from you. Also, how has the search for a motion picture of Mahler been going? Many thanks

Mahler, Gustav (1860 - 1911)
Born at Kaliste in Bohemia, the son of a Jewish pedlar, Gustav Mahler later described himself as three times homeless, a Bohemian in Austria, an Austrian among Germans and a Jew throughout the world, everywhere an intruder, never welcomed. His principal musical training was at the Vienna Conservatory, after which he embarked on a career as a conductor which took him to important positions in Budapest, Hamburg and finally at the Vienna State Opera, where he made a number of major reforms. Hostility fomented by sections of the press forced his resignation in 1907, after which he briefly continued a distinguished international career as a conductor, notably in New York, until his death in 1911. As a composer Mahler wrote symphonies that absorbed into their texture and form the tradition of German song in music that reflected in many ways the spirit of the time in which he lived, in all its variety. Orchestral Music Mahler completed nine symphonies, leaving a tenth unfinished, in addition to Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), a symphony in all but name, settings of a series of poems derived from the Chinese. The first of the symphonies, sometimes known as "Titan", includes a remarkable ironic funeral march that transforms a nursery tune. Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 8 make use of voices, the last of these on a massive scale. The symphonies, in their variety of mood, offer a reflection of the world, with music that may occasionally be garish and yet often reaches unsurpassable heights.

Arrangements of Beethoven's Fur Elise
"Fur Elise" by Beethoven is one of our most popular piece of Sheet Music. Although the original work is for Piano Solo we are now able to present a number of arrangements by Andy Ralls for other instruments, all with piano accompaniment: Mark Isham's Crash
The soundtracks of Mark Isham have been based on a wide variety of instrumental forces, from small intimate groups through jazz ensembles to full orchestras. His film music has included "The Net", "Blade", "The Cooler" and his oscar-nominated score for "A River Runs Through It". This sonic variety has been increased even further with his score to Crash which consists almost entirely of computer-based sounds with a dash of solo vocals. Isham describes this method of music creation as "returning to the bedroom" and, in additional to the domestic location of the composer's equipment, the resulting music is also somehow intimate and personal. Isham demonstrates his versatility by moving us with raw sound. The film will be released in the UK on 12th August and the soundtrack is available now. More...
