When they say "applause," applaud. Leaving the stage, he reminds the audience members of their duty: "Let's try and fake it for the people at home." It's an appropriately cynical introduction to the world of "Politically Incorrect."

Comments the way leno responded to the anal rape... that is why we are where we are! no one wants to hear about htat stuff... though i do understand that it is an entertainment show... maher should go on tds with that stuff... not leno. but leno's response is indicative of how the sheep would respond to that. maher was trying to make it seem funny... wasn't doing the best job of that. Posted by: ejpoeta on July 27, 2005 06:40 AM Thanks very much for putting this up. Maher is hilarious, as always, and paying attention, as always. Posted by: ProfessorPlum on July 27, 2005 07:35 AM You could hear it in the audience reactions - please don't burst our happy, 'everything is fine' bubble. To his credit, Jay let Bill go on, letting the side of him that realized that people need to hear how crazy things truly are win out over the voice telling him to save his own ass and the show. Comments Very disappointed in the show. Biden and Thompson talked for a total of probably 5 minutes due to the incessant rants of that no opinion asshole Robin Williams. He truly ruined the show with his ego. He even kept interrupting "New Rules." Posted by: duffyb on February 19, 2005 07:48 PM I understand what you're saying. • The Salon Interview : Bill Maher The political satirist talks about the 9/11 quote that got him fired from ABC, his new HBO show and why Bush is losing the war on terror. By Jake Tapper Bill Maher's back. And who would've guessed so soon? Last year, on the first episode of his "Politically Incorrect" show since the Sept. 11 attacks, he infamously compared the bravery of American politicians with that of al-Qaida terrorists. "We have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly," Maher said on the Sept. 17 episode. "Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it's not cowardly." It was classic Maher, as infuriatingly un-p.c. as ever. But the times, at least momentarily, had changed. And few wanted to hear or defend Maher's comments. Enemies of Maher, on both the left and right, seized the opportunity and called him unpatriotic. A protest ensued. Even the Bush White House (a frequent Maher target) stoked the outrage, with

    Rodale
Today show Comedian Bill Maher doesn't like to mince words, as he proved in nine seasons as the host of "Politically Incorrect."  Washington Post TV writer Tom Shales says, "Of all the comic commentators, Maher is the gutsiest, boldest, and least inhibited." Now some of the funniest moments from his new HBO show, "Real Time With Bill Maher," have been assembled in a slim volume Maher likes to call "New Rules." He was invited on the "Today" show to discuss the book. Here's an excerpt:
    Foreword
No more books by talk show hosts! No, I mean it! Just this last one and then that's it. Who do we think we are, anyway? I guess it's not enough to broadcast our every brilliant thought to millions of viewers each week. We also have to amass compilations of our favorite, most precious bon mots so that people can carry them around under their arms and enjoy them at the beach or on the subway or during a quiet moment sitting alone at home in a small room. Okay, okay, and they also make great gifts. There, I've said it. But this book is different. It's not your typical, pompous fare where I, the all-knowing host, sit in judgment, presuming to know, through my vast experience as a media whore, how you should be living your lives. No, no - not at all. This is a simple, humble collection of rules that basically points out how everyone but me has their head up their ass. Trust me, it's a great read. And have I mentioned it also makes a great gift?

Bill Maher, host of "Real Time with Bill Maher," in a Los Angeles television studio. As Maher hones his HBO show, he is trying a less noisy approach to debate.
LOS ANGELES - It's an unlikely suspicion, but a kinder, gentler Bill Maher seems to be emerging on television. On a recent episode of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher," he made sure conservatives were as well-represented in the audience as on the panel. These days, Maher also prides himself on hosting a talk show as opposed to a shouting show, a dominant TV genre that he admits included his old ABC program "Politically Incorrect." Asked if he's softening even as so many others in a polarized America become more brittle and intractable, Maher offers a quick reply: No. Fairness and good television, he said, are why he seeks a political balance in the audience when his panel includes such guests as Republican politicians Christie Whitman and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. "For a guest to come out and have to expect that everything he says is automatically going to be dismissed before he even gets to the end of a sentence, that's not fair.

"Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher," one of television's most provocative and humorous shows, places Maher at the center of a wildly diverse group of four panelists from the worlds of politics, media, music and entertainment who, through heated debate instigated by Maher, puncture both the liberal and conservative views about the hottest issues of the day.
Each evening, Maher brings together an unlikely group of guests from senators to drag queens, actors to rock stars, authors to activists to discuss the day's burning issues, such as "Is the National Enquirer always right?," "Can a person be justifiably fired for being too beautiful?," and "Is Clinton the Democrats' Reagan?"
Called the "Best Talk Show on Television" by TV Guide, "Politically Incorrect" is the winner of four CableACE Awards for Best Entertainment Host and Best Talk Show and has been nominated for nine Emmy Awards. Maher ingeniously mediates a hilarious and provocative half-hour of spontaneous opinionizing, bringing together such unlikely pairings as Jerry Seinfeld and Ed Rollins, Larry Flynt and Debbie Gibson, Governor Lowell Weicker and Howie Mandel, and Harvey Fierstein and G. Gordon Liddy.
Some of the program's past guests include Oliver Stone, Tim Allen, Jerry Seinfeld, Laura Dern, Ted Danson, Alec Baldwin, Vanessa Redgrave, Jay Leno, Sarah Jessica Parker, George Stephanopoulos, Garry Shandling, Bobcat Goldthwait, Barry White, Patty Hearst, Kelsey Grammer, John Gray, Dean Koontz, Sam Donaldson, Quentin Tarantino, Melissa Etheridge and George Clooney.

"Confirmed bachelor" says he is woman's "latest victim"
NOVEMBER 29Denying an ex-girlfriend's legal claim that he used racial slurs and assaulted her, comedian Bill Maher has fired back at the woman, describing her as a would-be extortionist who launched a campaign to embarrass and humiliate the HBO star after the demise of the pair's ten-month relationship. In the below Los Angeles Superior Court filing, Maherdescribed as a "confirmed bachelor, and a very public one at that"alleges that Nancy Johnson fabricated claims that he physically and verbally abused her. In a $9 million palimony lawsuit , Johnson, a centerfold model and former flight attendant also known as Coco Johnsen, claimed that Maher also promised to marry and have children with her, support her financially, and purchase a Beverly Hills home. Portraying himself as Johnson's "latest victim," the 48-year-old Maher contends that the woman's "modus operandi" is to try and shake down former consorts. One of her prior "unscrupulous schemes," Maher alleged, involved a 1997 shakedown bid targeting a Miami socialite whom Johnson falsely accused of rape and kidnapping. He's trying to make a point about the need for sacrifice, one of the subjects of his new book, "When You Ride Alone You Ride With bin Laden" (New Millennium), and an audience member on CNN's "TalkBack Live" just isn't getting it. "The leaders of our country have encouraged us to continue with our way of life, to not let terrorism win," says a college-age male from Massachusetts. "I mean, if we alter our lifestyle, then they're winning." "Well, that's exactly the wrong attitude," Maher replies evenly, a hint of anger crowding into his voice. "That is not the attitude they had in World War II. Your attitude is that freedom means you can do whatever you want whenever you want it, and that sacrifice is somehow un-American. ... But the idea that we should also be defensive about our flaws and weaknesses and our vulnerabilities is ridiculous." That's the kind of shoot-from-the-lip opinion that won Maher many viewers but ultimately cancellation on his late-night talk show, "Politically Incorrect." Late in 2001, his observance that the September 11 hijackers weren't cowardly, that "[the United States has] been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away," got him in hot water with the White House and (perhaps more important) advertisers. The show was finally canceled at the end of May.

    BACK TO NRO

Why PI should go. By Jonah Goldberg
September 28, 2001 2:30 p.m. ill Maher, host of ABC's Politically Incorrect , is under attack. Sears and Federal Express pulled their sponsorships of the show. Viewers are angry. Several affiliates have dropped him. His show is teetering on the brink of cancellation, all because he said that the terrorists who attacked the World Trade Center weren't cowards. Rather, he said, "We have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly." Now, I'm torn. On the one hand, Maher is not entirely wrong, though his comments were poorly timed and mean-spirited. The Clinton policy of risk-free symbolic strikes against Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden was hardly gutsy. On the other hand, Politically Incorrect deserves to be canceled more than any show not currently on the WB. Maher, his producers and fans have long contended that the show makes a valuable contribution by inviting apathetic Americans into the "national conversation." Of course, it's a mystery to me why any American who can't be bothered to pay attention to politics unless Pamela Anderson is discussing it should be welcome in that conversation.

Earlier today, I spoke with Professor Noam Chomsky, who teaches linguistics and philosophy at MIT. His latest book is Hegemony or Survival. I told him earlier, I have never had a guy requested more of me in 12 years of doing two shows. I swear to God, every kid wants Noam Chomsky. And we got him today. So, Professor, I’m not kidding. Over the last 12 years, on three different networks, people especially young kids request you. When I first did it, I didn’t even know who you were. All right, let me ask you this. It seems to me that the most religious people are also, at least in this country, the most super-patriotic. Isn’t there an inherent conflict there? I mean, if you’re truly religious and you believe in God I mean, Jesus is not an American, I assume [laughter]
