Alexander Campbell Mackenzie Edinburgh-born Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie was widely recognized as the greatest Scottish composer of his day. He was a fluent and intelligent composer who introduced some stylized Scottish folk elements into his work; the overtures, concertos and dramatic music are bracing and inventive. Some of his works were championed by internationally famous soloists, such as Sarasate and Paderewski. His enormous compositional output is distinguished by its high degree of craftsmanship and flair, and if many of his works today appear to be too similar for comfort to those of Sir Edward Elgar, it should be remembered that Mackenzie was the elder of the two composers, and that Elgar was very well aware of the debt that he owed to Mackenzie in terms of his own artistic development. The violin has always played a significant role in his life. His father, Alexander Mackenzie who was the principal violinist at the Theatre Royal in Edinburgh wanted his eldest son to follow in his footsteps and arranged for the ten year old Alexander to study music abroad in Germany. At the age of 18 he returned to his native Edinburgh, where he spent 14 years as violinist, teacher, and choir conductor. In 1879 he went to Florence and devoted himself to composition, until 1888 when he was appointed principal of the Royal Academy of Music, a post he held until 1924. He was knighted in 1895. One of Mackenzie's finest compositions is an orchestral piece called Benedictus. It is an arrangement of a violin and piano piece and was composed in 1888. We hope you enjoy it as part of today's concert.

An Extraordinary Individual Historical Context Just imagine for a moment that it is the beginning of the 20th century. The war in Bosnia, Hiroshima, the two world wars, the Great Depression of 1929, and the Bolshevik Revolution have not yet taken place. It is autumn 1900. A young man on a bicycle, fresh out of Harvard, his head filled with dreams and ambitions, effortlessly climbs the hills bordering the shores of the Gatineau River. His journey comes to an end near a small lake called Kingsmere. Intrigued by the analogy between the name of the site and his own name, he decides, then and there, to build his future from this site, which would become the Mackenzie King Estate after his death. top An Ambitious Young Man The young man, William Lyon Mackenzie King, grandson of the rebel leader William Lyon Mackenzie, was already dreaming of becoming Prime Minister of Canada and had recorded this ambition in the diary he was to keep meticulously for nearly fifty years. He remained faithful to his dream and succeeded, climbing the ladder from one rung to the next. He became a deputy minister in 1900, a member of Parliament in 1908, Minister of Labour in 1909 in the government of Sir Wilfred Laurier, whom he replaced as leader of the Liberal Party and Opposition Leader in 1919. He became Prime Minister of Canada in 1921 and held the position for 22 years, an unequalled record of longevity.
