SeattleInsider Email This Story Print This Story Norm MacDonald was born on October 17, 1963, in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. He began his career in stand up comedy. MacDonald's first job was writing for The Dennis Miller Show and then Roseanne. While writing for Roseanne, he was noticed by Lorne Michaels, who liked Norm's stand up, and gave him his job on Saturday Night Live. MacDonald became widely popular when he became the Weekend Update anchor with his trademark line `Now the fake news'. He lasted from September 24, 1994 to December 13, 1997, when he was fired by Don Ohlmeyer, president of NBC on the west coast. Norm's last weekend update was December 13, 1997, and he left the show in March 1998. His movie, Dirty Work, which he began working on in the summer of '97, came out 2 months later. In March 1999, his show, called The Norm show, came out on NBC and had a 3 season run. During the time, he starred in the movie Screwed, opposite Dave Chappelle. By Neal Justin, Star Tribune At the onset of the 2003-04 season, I was openly rooting for only two sitcoms: "Arrested Development" and "A Minute With Stan Hooper," both of which premiered on Fox. "Arrested" has survived, primarily on critical hosannas and its cozy Sunday-night time slot. "Hooper" got the ax in mid-January after only about a half-dozen airings. Too bad: This was the kind of mild-mannered, gentle comedy that everyone claims they crave. Audiences might have been thrown by the fact that the show brought together Barry Kemp, a sitcom veteran who served as executive producer for "Coach" and "Newhart," and Norm MacDonald, an often raunchy comic who was even too radical for "Saturday Night Live." How in the world could these two people work together? Apparently, they couldn't.

LATE BREAKING "SNL" NEWS Norm Macdonald Gets Dirty By Rich Brown If you thought Norm Macdonald's "Saturday Night Live" bits were extreme, wait till you hear his upcoming comedy album. "I just wanted something where I could do anything I wanted," says Macdonald about the album, which will include a routine about the homeless. "We used to pitch ideas for "Saturday Night Live" for sketches, and they would always get big laughs. But they'd say, 'We can't do it, it's too rough.' " Macdonald, in an interview with Time Out New York, says that when he was hosting "SNL's" "Weekend Update" segment he once almost got away with a joke that featured the famous war photo of a naked Vietnamese girl running for her life after a napalm attack. His plan was to show the photo and say, "Woody Allen is dating again." "We did it in dress rehearsal, and... they didn't boo, but there was this noise, like shock, for literally 30 seconds," says Macdonald. "They couldn't believe it. And then I tried to explain that the lady was fine, because now she's living in New Jersey somewhere. They really hated it." Macdonald will soon be seen in theaters as the star of "Dirty Work," a comedy directed by former "America's Funniest Home Videos" host Bob Saget.

Archived Issue's Thursday, May 28, 1998 Arts Norm MacDonald - Show Some Respect For His Feelings Eric Feigenbaum Senior Reporter Norm MacDonald is no longer the anchor of Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update and he's no longer funny. MacDonald appeared in the King Kat Theater Saturday night with a full house which expected some good humor. He started out strong, faltered, and never quite recovered - a possible predictor for his career. Perhaps MacDonald's lack of a planned shtick hurt him most. He didn't seem to have anything planned - no hilarious stories, no rhetorical questions, no themes. He just talked. Sometimes it was funny, sometimes it wasn't. MacDonald just waited for audience members to yell out something strange enough for him to work from. In fact, MacDonald's funniest part of his stand-up came from an audience member yelling "anal rape." This led the comedian into a discussion of prison and eventually to homosexuality. Parts of it were funny, parts offensive, parts were both. Unfortunately, a successful comedian can't afford to have too many humorless moments. All the big comedians - Steve Martin, Bill Cosby, Rosie O'Donnel, Robin Williams, even Joan Rivers - have a routine worked out before they hit the stage. Eddie Murphy always has a theme and a direction when he does stand-up. Delirious always leaves me feeling exactly like the name implies. Murphy's "Aunt Bunny" story floors me consistently. He uses good material and clever sound effects to entertain his audience. Sure, he plays off the audience, but he has a strong script that works without anyone's assistance.
