Paul Lynde Peter Marshall: Paul, can you get an elephant drunk?
Paul Lynde: Yes, but he still won't go up to your apartment. Paul Lynde didn't just say dirty things on The Hollywood Squares , he said kinky things. And bitchy things. In the real world he'd be the kind of person you'd invite to a party full of boring people, just because you knew he'd say something outrageous and liven things up.
Lynde was born in July 1926 in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He established himself in stage productions like New Faces and Bye Bye Birdie (a memorable part he re-created on film), and in roles in such movies as The Glass Bottom Boat, Send Me No Flowers, and as an Indian chief in The Villain, a Kirk Douglas 1979 experiment in comedy. On television he appeared in The Red Buttons Show The Perry Como Show, The Paul Lynde Show, and Temperature's Rising, and made memorable guest shots on shows like I Dream of Jeannie and The Munsters. But on television he'll always be remembered for two things: the practical-joking wiseacre warlock, Uncle Arthur, on Bewitched...

More Paul Lynde Our favorite center square made over 3,200 appearances on the show, and that was just at the beginning of the 1980-81 Vegas year. The quantity, and quality, of his beautifully-timed barbs just means that we got that much more of them than some of the others. That's why Paul Lynde now has the distinction of being the first celebrity on The Classic Hollywood Squares Site to get a second page devoted to his classic material. (Well, that and the first page was getting way too big to download.)
Peter Marshall: In the movies, Frankenstein's monster was always big and ugly. And he had lots of scars. What was his biggest fear?
Paul Lynde: That the girls would be turned off by his big nuts!
Peter Marshall: Can you get 12 pounds of feathers out of a goose?
Paul Lynde: I got them in there, didn't I?
(This next one is heard on a TV set in the 1979 Peter Sellers movie Being There
Peter Marshall: There's tennis elbow, there's jogger's knee, and there's swimmer's...swimmer's what?
Paul Lynde: All I can think of is trunks!

At a time when coming out was not a possibility, Paul Aloysius Lynde relied on a number of excuses which explained away his status as a "confirmed, lifelong bachelor." Often he just told fans his high school sweetheart had broken his heart, suggesting he was still too hurt to begin dating again. He served as Uncle Arthur on Bewitched, opposite Agnes Moorehead's Endora a woman he referred to on more than one occasion as "one of the all-time Hollywood dykes". He made arguably homophobic statements in public, telling People magazine in 1976, "My following is straight. I'm so glad. Gay people killed Judy Garland but they're not going to kill me." Lynde himself is among the gayest celebrities the world has ever known. Chronically cranky, sarcastic and mincing, Lynde's career was also defined by his voice work as Templeton the rat in Charlotte's Web , and as the wisecracking centerpiece on television's Hollywood Squares . During his life he served as comedy writer, nightclub performer, Broadway actor and director, recording artist, and television pitchman. The man who made the world "a safer place for sissies," suffered a number of tragedies including a constant battle to control his weight, his whisky, and his depression which culminated in an isolated, mysterious death in 1982.

    I. Who is Paul Lynde, to me? I think every outcast child who wasn't one of those sports kids that all the daddies wanted wished for a funny dad like the one Paul Lynde was in Bye Bye Birdie. Man, it would sure be cool, if Paul Lynde had been my dad (no offense meant to my real life dad, Conrad Bain), plus he'd have died when I was only 11, leaving me free and clear of responsibility and grades.
II. Who is Paul Lynde, to me? I was a child of television. Sure was. I make no bones about it. And I don't declare whether it was wrong or right. Here I am now, happy (well...), healthy (actually there's this small bump on the skin of my...). Anyway, here I am. I guess my memory stretches back to childhood. I blacked out a lot of it, though. You know, the beatings (kidding), the beratings (not kidding). The lectures that went on for EVER about how I wasn't doing good enough. But alas, the lectures couldn't go on forever, Dad but TV would. I remember watching the Hollywood Squares and hoping that people would pick Paul in the center square, and when they didn't I found it maddening. I mean

He was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio A noted character actor , Lynde was well known for his roles as Uncle Arthur on Bewitched and Harry McAfee, the befuddled father in Bye Bye Birdie . One notable skit involved Lynde as a husband in crutches coming back from an African safari. The play was filmed into a movie in . It was displayed out where people might be more likely to see it and rent it. If you're going to get any version, get this one! We rented it to watch as a family. The three younger kids watched it sporadically, but our 11 year old held in and watched the whole thing. My husband and I are huge Paul Lynde fans, so we were cracking up the entire time. All our kids were looking at us like we were nuts. For those of you who don't know the story, it's a spoof on when Elvis had to join the army. Ann, Kitten with a Whip, Margret plays a teenager who is chosen to represent all girls on National TV. Her idol Birdie is going off to join the army and will kiss her, and all of woman kind, goodbye on the Ed Sullivan show. Paul Lynde plays her dad, and he doesn't think too kindly of the greasy aging rock star. The other trouble is Ann Margret just got pinned to her steady beau and he's not taking it very well. Will he allow her to kiss Birdie on tv, will they break up or will true love prevail? Tune in to find out.

    • When he was guest starring on Bewitched, or giving smartass answers on Hollywood Squares, Paul Lynde was pretty funny. As the lead on his own series, full of lame situations and jokes even the Brady Bunch would find insipid, Paul was a bust. I remember one episode had Paul's hippie daughter getting married in the backyard swimming pool..Stiller and Meara were the in-laws, and the ever present Pamela Ferdin was the precious younger daughter who always filled her "unhip" dad in..e.g. Pamela: "Her new boyfriend is heavy!!" Paul:"You mean he's fat?" Pamela:"Oh daddy!" I really have to meet the studio wizards who tried to pass Paul Lynde off as a family man. Paul Lynde was GAY? Get outta here. He was a man's man like Rock Hudson or Liberace. Gay? Whatever. I agree that Paul Lynde as a family man is a pretty wild premise. But you have to take into account that there was a time when people did not acknowledge the existence of homosexuality. People who watched Liberace's show were in total denial that he was gay, even though it was obvious. And consider movies: there was a character named Clifton Webb, who appeared in several movies in the 40's and 50's, such as Mr. Belvedere and Laura. They frequently cast him as a family man or the leading lady's suitor, and he was very obviously gay. But back then no one would acknowledge that gay existed. And this kind of denial was still prominent when The Paul Lynde Show was produced.

Paul Lynde's infectious laugh and sarcastic wit make him stand out as one of Bewitched 's most memorable characters. But Paul's life was much more than a handful of appearances on Bewitched and being the center square on the game show Hollywood Squares . Lynde's rise from a small town in Ohio to Beverly Hills, California is fascinating. Lynde was born on June 13, 1926 in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He was one of six children born to Hoy and Sylvia Lynde. The family stayed in Mount Vernon through Paul's formative years, but Paul always dreamed of bigger things. After seeing the original Ben Hur at age 5, he set out on a mission to become a rich and famous movie star. His dad was at one time the town's sheriff, and the family lived above the county jail. However, that didn't stop the young wise guy from spending his time sitting on the steps of a mansion in town and waving to cars as they passed by. Even though he struggled with his weight and hide his sexual identity, he knew he was destined for bigger things and that his humor would get him there. I know that I'm not her target audienceshe seems to be fighting for Oprah viewers, frankly; non-politico's who will be drawn to the star power and maybe pick up some political insight along the way.
Or, at least, I'm giving her credit that using big names to preach outside the choir must be her strategy.
    Two big disappointments:
  • The blog roll of celebs plus A-list bloggers is...boringly predictable, and predictably boring. Wonkette? Volokh? Puleeze. I was hoping she's send some linky love where it could do some good, and shine light on great bloggers in the trenches who deserve the attention, like abortion clinic days Republic of T Bag News Notes , or Latino Pundit . Even if she asked *her* bloggers to pick a favorite blog for the blogroll, that would be great. But her blogroll looks like a randsom selection of high-traffic blogs. It's like getting sports socks for Christmas.
