    PAUL LYNDE (Uncle Arthur)
Broadway, film, and television audiences began their love Affair with Paul Lynde at the Number One Fifth Avenue, where he received his first break: He was a stand-up comedian. Then came Leonard Sillman's New Faces Of 1952 on Broadway (which also launched the careers of Lynde's Bewitched costars Alice Pearce and Alice Ghostley, as well as Eartha Kitt, Carol Lawrence, and others).A two-year TV run on The Ferry Come Show followed, as did Broadway and film versions of Bye Bye Birdie (1963), which featured Lynde's rousing rendition of the tune Kids
Before his untimely death from a heart attack in January 1982, Paul appeared in summer stock stage productions of The Impossible Years, Don't Drink the Water, and Plaza Suite . He was in the 1954 movie version of New Faces (with Alice Ghostley), and in the films Send Me No Flowers (1964) and Rabbit Test
Besides bewitching the TV world as Uncle Arthur, Lynde graced the small screen on The Dean Martin Show, The Kraft Music Hall, The Donny and Marie Show, and daytime and primetime editions of the popular game show Hollywood Squares , where for years he occupied the center square (many times coguesting with Elizabeth Montgomery).

THE PAUL LYNDE STORY A New Biography by
    Available Now Via Amazon
In an age when celebrities have turned the act of coming out into an empowering media event, Paul Lynde certainly seems like a campy relic of less-liberated times. This view of Lynde as an out-of-step, self-loathing queen of queens overlooks the man's great, if accidental, achievement: getting away with being gay on TV on an almost daily basis for years. During his three decades as a popular character actor on television, film and the stage, this fairy forefather's arch and bitchy wit snuck regular doses of the queer world into that bastion of intolerance, the American living room. Lynde showed mainstream viewers that a gay man could deliver the jokes, not just be the butt of them. In doing so, he helped make homosexuality more palatable to unwitting viewers who simply saw him as a stylish, funny man. Biographers Steve Wilson and Joe Florenski draw on revealing interviews with friends from Lynde's childhood, college days and adult years - including stars such as Phyllis Diller, Charlotte Rae, Cloris Leachman and Peter Marshall, who worked with Lynde in Broadway productions and in film and television. What emerges is a memorable portrait of a man who reaped his share of wealth, enjoyed a fair amount of fame and basked in the adoration of thousands of fans - but paid a price in hardship, heartbreak and hangovers.

    I. Who is Paul Lynde, to me? I think every outcast child who wasn't one of those sports kids that all the daddies wanted wished for a funny dad like the one Paul Lynde was in Bye Bye Birdie. Man, it would sure be cool, if Paul Lynde had been my dad (no offense meant to my real life dad, Conrad Bain), plus he'd have died when I was only 11, leaving me free and clear of responsibility and grades.
II. Who is Paul Lynde, to me? I was a child of television. Sure was. I make no bones about it. And I don't declare whether it was wrong or right. Here I am now, happy (well...), healthy (actually there's this small bump on the skin of my...). Anyway, here I am. I guess my memory stretches back to childhood. I blacked out a lot of it, though. You know, the beatings (kidding), the beratings (not kidding). The lectures that went on for EVER about how I wasn't doing good enough. But alas, the lectures couldn't go on forever, Dad but TV would. I remember watching the Hollywood Squares and hoping that people would pick Paul in the center square, and when they didn't I found it maddening. I mean

Lynde, Paul (1926-1982) Out magazine, writing after the death of Paul Lynde, said that the comedian, most famous for being the crucial "center square" on the game show Hollywood Squares , made the world "a safer place for sissies." Yet, in spite of (or perhaps because of) his visibility and immense popularity, Lynde was fiercely closeted during his lifetime, and even known to denigrate gay audiences as a whole. Moreover, despite the campy, bitchy comic image he displayed to the public, Lynde was a very tormented individual troubled by chronic alcoholism, weight problems, and loneliness. Sponsor Message.
Paul Edward Lynde was born June 13, 1926, in Mount Vernon, Ohio. His father was a butcher and also, for a time, the local sheriff. His mother was known for her cooking, as Lynde would be later in life. Indeed, Lynde's early inclination towards overeating led to obesity by his teens; he weighed over 250 pounds when he enrolled as a freshman at Northwestern University in 1944. Lynde majored in theater at college, where his classmates included Cloris Leachman and Charlton Heston, and while he aspired to be a "serious" screen actor, his manic persona consistently earned him comic roles. To some extent, this typecasting was one of the frustrations that lasted Lynde's entire life.

by Billy Ingram Paul Lynde had a strong career in television all throughout the Sixties and Seventies, appearing in a handful of memorable Bewitched episodes as a semi-regular (Uncle Arthur), he was the de-facto star of the long-running daytime game show 'Hollywood Squares' and had a one-year run as the star of The Paul Lynde Show in 1972. Paul Lynde got his big break on Broadway and in the movies, his big successes were Bye, Bye Birdie (both play and film) and Under The Yum Yum Tree He became a popular guest star on sitcoms in the early-sixties, landing a reoccurring role on the hit show Bewitched in 1965. Lynde's career almost hit the skids at that point. He was a BIG drinker and one evening in 1965, a young actor Paul Lynde was partying with in San Francisco fell from the comedian's hotel room to his death eight floors below. The story was hushed up in the press.

    Remembering Paul Lynde
June 13, 1926 - January 10, 1982 Here's to remembering a great comedic actor on what would have been his 79th birthday!!!! (WOW!) The Righteous Brothers' song, "Rock And Roll Heaven" springs to mind...
If there's a comedy heaven, you know they have a helluva show...
(above photo courtesy of Michael Airington I don't remember when I first saw Paul Lynde. And I don't remember when I became aware of how funny I thought he was. My first awareness of being a fan is watching the original Hollywood Squares, only because I wanted to see him. That was over 35 years ago. In 1974, I saw Paul Lynde in person. He was performing in "No Hard Feelings". After the performance, I got him to sign the playbill & had someone take a picture of the two of us. Of course, I still have these items! Treasures!
