By Brian Libby There is a car wash on La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles not far from David Lynch's home in the Hollywood Hills. Its marquee is supposed to read "God Bless America," but the 'B' has fallen off. The message that's left "God Less America" is an accordingly odd mixture of eerie and comical. In other words, it makes for a perfect Lynchian moment. Forget Oscars and Golden Globes, thumbs up and four stars: The greatest accolade for any filmmaker is immortality through the common adjective. There is no finer tribute to Alfred Hitchcock, for example, than the acceptance of "Hitchcockian" as a term denoting unease, suspense and intrigue. Likewise, "Felliniesque" elicits visions of chaotic, colorful, circuslike surroundings, and "Bergmanesque" can only mean oppressive melancholy and the absence of God.

Here's his full report: "The film has been filming since 2003, at which time my sister-in-law was an extra. Having taken off time from work to have a baby, she only did the couple of days In Dec '03 when Lynch shot for several days just out of LA (most of the film was shot in Poland) and did no more. When the opportunity arose for extras again - she declined, but I decided to look into it. What do you know? I got two days work. I didn't get the script, we were only given a BREAKDOWN of our scene, and that's all. Lynch said very LITTLE to us on both days. The DP was more sociable, and the casting director was lovely. What I can gather is that it's a Twin Peaks-like mystery about a woman that dissapears near the San Gab mountains.

Il a su imposer son univers, unique, dérangeant et étrange à travers le paysage cinématographique mondial. Il naît le 20 janvier 1946 à Missoula dans l'Etat du Montana. Il mène une enfance plutôt calme, son père est chercheur dans le domaine de l' agriculture et sa mère enseignante. Le petit David est un enfant introverti et calme. Il s'intéresse très tôt au monde artistique, notamment à la peinture ( ses peintres favoris étant Jackson Pollock ou encore Francis Bacon ). En 1965 il entre à la Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts. En 1966, il commence à s'interesser au cinéma et réalise des courts-métrages. Grâce à ces courts il obtient une bourse de l'American Institute of Films pour son court métrage Grandmother En 1976 il franchit une étape puisqu'il réalise son premier long métrage, Eraserhead, véritable ovni. En 1980, il réalise Elephant Man avec John Hurt et Anthony Hopkins dans les rôles principaux. En 1984 il s'attaque à la périlleuse adaptation au cinéma de l'oeuvre majeure de Franck Herbert, Dune. Ce film connaitra d'ailleurs un succès mitigé. En 1986, il réalise le magnifique Blue Velvet, avec la non moins magnifique Isabella Rosselini ( avec qui il vécut quelques temps ). En 1990, il connaît la consécration avec Sailor et Lula qui obtient la Palme d'Or au festival de Cannes. En 1992, il réalise Twin Peaks, Fire walks with me, adaptation de la série télé culte qu'il a crée deux ans auparavant avec Mark Frost. Il créera plus tard On air une autre série télé.

La rassegna della Fondazione Cineteca Italiana ci consente di rivolgere immediatamente l’attenzione al raffinatissimo bianco e nero che avvolge la splendida fotografia del film, opera di Freddie Francis, che per questa prova ricevette la sua prima candidatura all’Oscar , come John stesso, hanno imparato che l’umanità, quella vera, si coltiva più in profondità delle superfici esteriori etichettabili dal mostruoso senso estetico comune.
