http://www.who2.com/belalugosi.html
BELA LUGOSI Actor Bela Lugosi shot to stardom in the title role of the 1931 film version of Bram Stoker 's Dracula and set the standard for movie vampires. A successful stage actor in his native Hungary and in Germany, he emigrated to the United States in the 1920s and played various character roles until grabbing the lead in the stage production of Dracula in 1927. Lugosi's talent for playing a villain led to a career of playing monsters and mad scientists, and it's generally accepted that he made a lot of bad choices. Some of his more memorable movies include The Black Cat Ninotchka (1939, starring Greta Garbo The Wolfman (1941) and Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). In 1955 Lugosi committed himself to an institution, admitting an addiction to methadone. In his last years his personal life and career were on the skids, but he still worked a little in television and low-budget films. He died while working on what has been called one of the worst movies ever made, Plan 9 From Outer Space (released in 1959).

From 1917 until his death in 1956, Bela Lugosi acted in over 100 films, both silent and talkies, with some made in his native Hungary before he fled due to political unrest. But the actor will always be remembered for playing the title role in Tod Browning's 1931 Dracula , the film that virtually created the supernatural horror film genre. The association between Lugosi and the vampire he made famous was so strong, he was even buried in his Dracula cape. (Though this was not, as you might have believed, a desire he actually expressed while he was alive.) But typecasting and his inability to master the English language severely limited Bela's career, and in his later years, a despondent Lugosi became addicted to morphine. It was during this time that he became persona non grata in Hollywood, forced to make a series of forgettable B-movies, each one cheaper than the last. After several quickies for Monogram Pictures (

Love this song. I saw them live in Philadelphia years ago and it was easily in the top three concerts of all time. Peter Murphy is/was a true rock legend, and I like wuite a bit of his solo material as well. And Bauhaus does have a sense of humor. Some of their later material is just out there, but they have been pigeonholed by this song.

The Garage Kits Of Bela Lugosi
by Jon Wang
Docmuscle9@aol.com
s a huge fan of Bela Lugosi, I thought it might be interesting to chronicle all the garage kits he has been the subject of. When one thinks of Lugosi, the image of his intense malevolent Dracula comes to mind - and this is basically where the story begins. Horizon (1988) Billiken (1989) Monstrology Models Resin From The Grave Mad Labs Dimensional Designs Aurora models had the distinction of being the first to render Lugosi in plastic with their 1962 "long box" edition of Dracula. While the kit itself does not capture a great likeness of him, the incredible box art is all Lugosi. For any serious Lugosi fan this is a must have collectible. The second kit to feature a "loose" likeness of Bela was Aurora's Dracula's Dragster. This caricature kit was released in 1965. To a five year old boy this was definitely Bela Lugosi! Aurora did a final take on lugosi in 1971. This was the "MonsterScenes" Dracula released only in Canada. While this is the same kit Aurora released in 1975 in the "Monsters of the Movies" series, it features much better box art than its 1975 counterpart. This kit features the classic descending stairway pose taken from the movie. Lugosi found his way to vinyl with Horizen's "Sci-fi Art" series in 1988. Sculpted by M. Kosada this was a fairly staightfoward take on dracula, which featured a nice likeness, but overall was a bit toy like. A good kit nonetheless. Billiken's 1989 version of dracula was a suberb kit. An elegant sculpture - this still stands as the definitive Lugosi Dracula piece.

NAME: Bela Lugosi BORN: BIRTH PLACE: Lugos, Hungary (Now Romania) DIED:
BIOGRAPHY

Born Be’la Ferenc Dezso Blasko, the actor who brought Dracula to life on the silver screen changed his name for the stage, taking Lugosi as it meant “one from the town of Lugos.”
Bela Lugosi was the youngest of four children to be born into an upper middle-class family in Hungary. However, at the age of twelve he ran away and hoped to act. He found little work, other than in the mines or railroad yards, until one of his older sisters arrange for him to take some small roles in provincial theatre.
Formal training was the usual route for actors at this time, so Lugosi studied acting theory and method diligently.
Soon, Bela Lugosi was averaging thirty to forty roles per year, many of which were operettas, as he possessed a fine singing voice as a young man. In 1911, Lugosi went to work in the theatre in the capital city of Budapest, and gained much popularity. When World War I broke out, although actors were exempt from military service, Bela volunteered to fight for his country and became an infantry lieutenant. He was wounded three times during the war, and decorated for his efforts, before leaving the army in 1916.
