James A. Lovell, Jr. James A. Lovell, Jr., the commander of America's fifth moon launch, Apollo 13, presented the Schooler Lecture on Lovell, who, along with his crew, averted disaster during the 1970 mission, has had his tale recounted in print and most recently in the blockbuster movie "Apollo 13." His experiences as a NASA astronaut have been invaluable as he pursued his post-NASA days in the business communications field. A native of Cleveland, Lovell began his space career in 1962 as one of the group of nine astronauts selected by NASA. In 1965, he and Frank Borman were launched into space on the history-making Gemini 7 mission for the first rendezvous of two maneuverable spacecraft. Lovell is the first man to have gone to the moon twice and logged 715 hours in space. Since his retirement from the space program, he has been senior executive with Bay-Houston Towing, a diversified company involved in harbor and coast towing, and in the communications industry with Centel Corporation, one of the nation's largest communications companies. He now heads his own entity, Lovell Communications. Lovell is a graduate of the U.S. Navel Academy and is past chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness.

James A. Lovell, Jr.
Astronaut James A Lovell, Jr. was born March 25, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1952 and became a test pilot in 1958. In 1962, he was selected for astronaut training in the Gemini and Apollo programs. On December 21, 1968, Lovell, Borman and Anders became the first men to leave Earth's gravity and orbit the Moon. Apollo 8 gave us our first close-up view of the lunar surface and of the Moon's backside. Most significantly, Apollo 8 confirmed the technology that permitted succeeding crews to land on the Moon. In 1970, with Fred Haise, Jr., and John Swigert, Jr., he returned the crippled Apollo 13 safely to Earth after an in-flight emergency.

Flew on first mission to circumnavigate the moon (Apollo 8)
James A. Lovell was born March 25, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Juneau High School, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; attended the University of Wisconsin for 2 years, then received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1952; graduated from the Naval Test Pilot School in 1958, the Aviation Safety School at the University of Southern California in 1961, and the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1971.
Lovell's interest in flying and rockets dates back to his teenage years when he built and fired model rockets. Upon his graduation from Annapolis in 1952, Lovell was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy. As a Naval Aviator, he served in a variety of flight assignments before attending the Naval Test Pilot School at Patuxent River, Maryland. After completing flight training, he served as a Test Pilot at Pax River's Naval Air Test Center from 1958 to 1961. While there, he served as a Program Manager for the F-4H Phantom and was in charge of evaluating the fighter's weapon system. He later attended the Aviation Safety School at the University of Southern California, and served as a Flight Instructor and Safety Engineer with Fighter Squadron 101 at the Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia.

Richard Henry Lee Papers
(0.5 linear feet) B L51 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract A politician and arch revolutionary, Richard Henry Lee was an impassioned supporter of American independence from the mid-1760s. Born into one of the most prominent families in the colony on January 20, 1732, Lee was bred to a political life, serving in the Virginia House of Burgesses during the Stamp Act and Non-importation crises, helping convey his state into the revolutionary camp. As a delegate to the Continental Congress, Lee was the first to officially move that a declaration of independence be drafted, and he ended his public career as a principled opponent of ratification of the Constitution and as Virginia's first U.S. Senator. He died at home in Virginia in June 1794. A small, but highly valuable collection, the papers of Richard Henry Lee document the political life and activities of one of the most ardent revolutionaries in Virginia. The 0.5 linear feet of letters (193 items), most addressed to Lee, are an important resource for study of pre-Revolutionary political agitation in Virginia, the increasing connections forged between the colonies, and the political course of the war. To a lesser degree the collection documents Lee's late-life anti-federalism. Among the major correspondents are Lee's brothers Arthur and William, and such leaders in the revolutionary cause as George Washington, Samuel Adams, Charles Lee, John Adams, and Thomas Paine.
