BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY
Astronaut James Lovell (born 1928) was the first American to make four flights into space. His missions included Apollo 8, the first manned flight to the moon, and the star-crossed Apollo 13, which returned to earth after damage to the spacecraft threatened the safety of the astronauts on board. As a child, James Arthur Lovell, Jr. developed a passion for rocketry and flight that would last all his life. With the help of a science teacher and other friends, he constructed and launched his own small rockets in high school. These early interests set the trajectory of his future: Lovell learned to fly airplanes under the Navy's Holloway Plan while studying at the University of Wisconsin. After two years of school he transferred to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, where he wrote his senior thesis on liquid-fuel rocketry. One of a small group of men selected for naval aviation upon graduation from the Academy, Lovell began his military career in 1953. He set out with a young new wife: his high-school sweetheart, Marilyn Gerlach.

Executive summary: Apollo 13 Military service: U.S. Navy A former Navy test pilot, Jim Lovell is best known as the Spacecraft Commander of the dramatic Apollo 13 flight (April 11-17, 1970. The mission attracted anxious world attention when the Service Module cryogenic oxygen system failed leaving astronauts and ground command scrambling to find some way to bring the crew home safely despite their crippled space craft. Amid cheers around the globe, Lovell and crewmembers John Swigert and Fred Haise converted their lunar module into a "lifeboat" that would keep them alive until their return to Earth. Previously, Lovell had served as Command Module Pilot and Navigator aboard Apollo 8, the lunar orbiting mission that made Lovell, Frank Borman , and William Anders the first humans to escape the Earth's gravitational influence. Earlier still he had flown on the Gemini 7 and Gemini 12 missions with

James Lovell
James Lovell was an instance of a patriotic son in conflict with a Tory refugee father. John Lovell, his father, was a schoolmaster in Boston, Massachusetts. he was a good scholar, and a man of considerable force of character. Many of the principal men of the Revolution had been under his tuition. He was a decided loyalist, and in 1777 he accompanied the British troops to Halifax, where he died in 1778, at the age of seventy years, his son, James Lovell, was born in 1737, and graduated at Harvard College in 1756. For many years afterward he was a distinguished teacher of the Latin school, being associated with his father. From the commencement of the colonial troubles, James Lovell was a firm Whig. In consequence of his patriotic zeal, General Gage put him in prison, and he was carried by the British troops to Halifax, where he was for a long time kept in close confinement. The father was there a Tory refugee; the son a prisoner, suffering for his devotion to his country's cause.
At length, Mr. Lovell was exchanged, and he returned to Boston to receive the congratulations of his fellow-citizens on his fidelity. He was immediately elected to a seat in the Continental Congress in which station his services were manifold and exceedingly valuable. He was a member of the committee of foreign correspondence, and unwearying in attention to his duties. Before the establishment of the constitution of Massachusetts, in 1786, Mr. Lovell was collector of customs for the port of Boston, and afterward was naval officer for Boston and Charleston until his death, in 1814, at the age of seventy-six years. Mr. Lovell was truly a devoted patriot, and an example of the sacrifice of domestic peace for the general good.

of the Land in and around the community of
Lovell, Oklahoma during the 1898-1948 era This memorial is graciously dedicated in honor of homesteaders and other pioneer settlers of this area in recognition of their faith and courage to explore the unknown and to endure the great depression, two world wars, droughts and untold hardships; and in appreciation of the heritage of joy and thanksgiving they passed on to succeeding generations descendants of these pioneer families respectfully reaffirm our ancestors' reverence for freedom, family, and commitment to democracy. These early settlers were among thousands of recent descendants of many foreign countries and varying nationalities who migrated to this area of Oklahoma seeking a new way of life on untilled land. Some of these settlers homesteaded their land after filing a claim following the "run of 1889." Many acquired their farms or home sites at a later date. Either by Purchase or trade, living here with other homesteaders and pioneers to make a living and raise their families together they became the "Pioneer Families of the Lovell Community and the surrounding trade area" by their commitment. The foundation for our modern society was built.
This memorial was made possible by descendants and friends of these Pioneer Settlers who suffered many hardships to develop the area for those who followed.

'''James A. Lovell, Jr.''', Captain, USN, Ret. (born March 25 ) is a former NASA astronaut who flew on Gemini 7 Gemini 12 , and Apollo 8 , but is most famous as the commander who brought the crippled Apollo 13 back safely. His four flights made him the recordholder for time in space (over 715 hours) until the Skylab missions.
It is also possible that he holds the record (with his Apollo 13 crewmates) for farthest distance a human has travelled from Earth. See Apollo 13 for details. The accident on Apollo 13 meant that he would never set foot on the Moon despite reaching it twice.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio , he went to the University of Wisconsin , where he became a brother of Alpha Phi Omega , and then the United States Naval Academy , graduating in and entering the United States Navy . He spent four years as a test pilot at the Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent River, Maryland , then was selected in for the second group of NASA astronauts.
He retired from the Navy and the space program in and went to work at the Bay-Houston Towing Company in Houston, Texas

March 2005 Jim Lovell has steadfastly refused to sign autographs for several years, for any price. In April of 2001 and November 2003 he did special signings at Novaspace. Response was overwhelming. He will only sign autographs at this signing. He will accept no mailed autographs from us, or anyone else, at his office. Capt. James Lovell just missed the cut to be one of the original 7 Mercury astronauts. He was among the first chosen of the "New 9," the second group chosen in 1962. His first flight was the long-duration Gemini 7, which set the record for days in space (14) and also completed the first rendezvous with Gemini 6 in 1965. He commanded the final mission, Gemini 12 in 1966. Holding the record for the most time in space, he was chosen for Apollo 8, the daring first manned flight to the moon in 1968. Although Apollo 11's first moon landing gets more press, it was Apollo 8 that won the space race for America; a gutsy and flawlessly executed mission that provided the momentum and confidence NASA needed to complete the Apollo program, after the lows of the Apollo 1 fire. And then there was Apollo 13...

The pinnacle of scientific exploration in the 20th Century was NASA's Apollo program. On Apollo 8, Astronauts Lovell, Borman, and Anders showed all of humanity how truly fragile and precious the Earth's environment is. The "Blue Marble in Space" remains one of the most enduring visions of the Apollo program. During the Apollo 13 mission, Captain Lovell and his crew captured the focus of the entire world. They illustrated the courage and daring that have been associated with exploration of unknown environments since the Voyages of Discovery crisscrossed the world. The James and Marilyn Lovell Center for Environmental Geography and Hazards Research recognizes the legacy of Jim Lovell's outstanding leadership in global exploration and environmental science and Marilyn Lovell's unwavering support of her husband and his extraordinary vision
