Louise Bogan was born in Livermore Falls, Maine, in 1897. She attended Boston Girls' Latin School and spent one year at Boston University. She married in 1916 and was widowed in 1920. In 1925, she married her second husband, the poet Raymond Holden, whom she divorced in 1937. Her poems were published in the New Republic , the Nation Poetry: A Magazine of Verse Scribner's and Atlantic Monthly . For thirty-eight years, she reviewed poetry for The New Yorker Bogan found the confessional poetry of Robert Lowell and John Berryman distasteful and self-indulgent. With the poets whose work she admired, however, such as Theodore Roethke , she was extremely supportive and encouraging. She was reclusive and disliked talking about herself, and for that reason details are scarce regarding her private life. The majority of her poetry was written in the earlier half of her life when she published

Fantasy competition in which Thelma and louise battle the Blues Brothers, Speed Racer and others in an allstar cross-country road rally.

World Wide Web Fights presents
The Scenario
Our first team is the brother pairing of "Joliet" Jake and Elwood Blues, with their police-issue Bluesmobile. They plan to use the prize money to buy out Sister Mary Stigma's St. Helen of the Blessed Shroud Orphanage and rename it to Our Lady of Buggery and Blues In lane two are Thelma Dickinson and Louise Sawyer. Louise has the wheel of the Thunderbird convertible and Thelma, as always, is packing heat. They've apparently given up fishing trips for bigger game. Lane three holds the stalwarts of the Cannonball Run, J.J. McClure and his sidekick Victor. The zany duo has participated in the original two Runs, and are looking forward to thwarting their competitors once more. Next up is Speed Racer in the internationally famous MACH 5. Speed and the rest of the Go Racing Team are ready for this next racing challenge, assuming they can figure out where Spritle and Chim Chim went to... Next, standing beside their orange '69 Dodge Charger the "General Lee" are Bo and Luke Duke, the pride of Hazzard County (Motto: "We got your convenient ramp-like terrain features right here!"). The Dukes plan to use their prize money to pay off legal fees incurred defending against an NAACP lawsuit over the decorations on the General. And finally, from the NASCAR curcuit is the infamous Dale "The Intimidator" Earnhardt. He is fingering his mustache mysteriously...

INTERVIEWER: ARNALD GLIMCHER

AG: ARNALD GLIMCHER
LN: LOUISE NEVELSON AG: You've stated that you consider your work to be of a distinctly feminine sensibility, yet the scale of your works in the media of wood assemblage has often prompted critics to use masculine metaphors in describing your works. Can you explain how this feminine sensibility manifests itself in your work as an extension of your life really? How does the work reveal its femininity? LN: Well, let's begin first to say that in birth a male has his not only sensibility but a male has what constitutes a male. A female has what constitutes a female. So let's accept that and from that premise state that a female cannot work like a male, and a male does not work like a female. But that does not reduce the preconceived idea that we are in a society and have been for thousands of years where there is male dominance and consequently that is just a cliche that the world has superimposed that a female cannot produce or have visions of grandeur and greatness, that nature never meant that anyone who has a brain in their head that they should be reduced because of the sex. AG: Yes. But at the time you began working there were options. There were many people that were welding metal. But you didn't select that as your medium.

Louise Michel
Louise Michel was born on 29th May 1830. She was raised by her mother and paternal grandparents. Her love and understanding of everything downtrodden, human and animal alike, developed from her empathy with her childhood world. Her compassion and sensitivity to suffering grew, as she grew. This, along with her instinct to rebel against social inequalities, led her along the revolutionary path. In January 1853 she took a position as a schoolmistress at Audelancourt. In the time she was teaching there, she constantly dreamed of going to Paris. Only there, she felt, could people fight the empire. In Paris, she concentrated on teaching, on writing poetry and reading. In the little free time she had left, she attended lectures on physics, chemistry and law. These courses helped to quench her thirst for knowledge. While walking home at night through the streets of Paris, she began to see more of the impoverished victims of Parisian society. She expressed how these people touched her, in her poetry:
I have seen criminals and whores
And spoken with them. Now I inquire

Excerpts from a biography of the lesbian New England writer, unusually frank considering it was published in 1899.

Containing A Brief Sketch Of The Life
Of Maria Louise Pool, By Dr. Amand M. Hale
Published in 1899.
Roweny in Boston - An excerpt from that novel "Tenting at Stony Beach" - The complete novel. It is always pleasant to dwell upon a literary career, unpretentious, not stimulated by greed, nor coddled by fulsome flatteries, - a career so simple, so sincere, so honest, so generous, as that of Maria Louise Pool. Her life began in the little Massachusetts town of Rockland, within ten miles of the coast, when the century was but little more than two-score years old, and ended there last May, just when her fame was close upon its culmination and her power had developed by the slow growth of years. Fifty-six years ago New England was, really, what the aggressive West sometimes calls it to-day, provincial. Along that low-lying coast that stretched monotonous levels southward from the Boston of that day, the old farm-houses were far more numerous than the stately colonial mansions that skirted the Bay farther seaward. Out of them, in the short, pale New England spring, when the arbutus was opening its pink buds in the pine woods along the shore and mingling its fragrance with the sea scent that was blown in by the east wind, came sturdy yeomen, who sailed away to the Banks or southward to the Cape, intent upon earning by honest toil a livelihood for the wives and children left behind; and when winter froze the earth and the dank marshes were dun and desolate, and the sullen sea roared, they returned - those that the sea had spared - to the shelter of their homes.
