Carole Lombard was born Jane Alice Peters on October 6, 1908, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the daughter of Elizabeth Knight and Frederick C. Peters. She had two older brothers, Frederick and Stuart, and enjoyed playing with them more than making paper cutouts or valentines. A childhood friend remembered that "every other afternoon this 5 year old blonde would come screeching across the street, demanding a chance to play one of the ends [in football]. She was always sent home again." After her parent's separation in 1914, her mother took the children to live in California. All of Lombard's life, her mother, "Bessie," remained her closest confidant. They died together on the airplane in 1942. She left school after Junior High, and often participated in exhibition ballroom dancing at the Coconut Grove in Hollywood. It was here, in 1925, that a Fox Studio executive spotted her and gave her a screen test. Her career had begun.

Last Updated Carole Lomabard was the essence of the 1930's film star: beautiful and talented. Like other legends of Hollywood, her life was ultimately made more important than her films due to her untimely tragic death. For her the phrase "a great broad" would be a compliment. She was even adored by her film crews, which is a rare thing. Her beauty was matched by a good heart and lively spirit. Born in 1908 as Jane Alice Peters, she started out in silent films at the age of 13. After an automotive accident that scarred her face side-lined her for a short while (the scar on her cheek was normally hidden with good lighting and makeup, but occasionally is visible in a movie), she returned to become a Mack Sennett "Bathing Beauty", which sharpened her comedic skills. Her big break starring film was "Twentieth Century" with John Barrymore and by 1937 was listed as Hollywood’s highest paid actress. She had an early marriage to William Powell and although they divorced, they remained friends and even appeared together in the highly successful (and funny) "My Man Godfrey" years after the divorce. Her romance and marriage to Clark Cable is legendary. (It wasn’t love at first sight, since she loved to tease and he wasn’t amused. But like any good romance novel, they fell in love in the end.) She slowed down her career after the marriage in an effort to have children and to support his career (he made "Gone With the Wind" during this time). Her last movie was a great one and perhaps her best: "To Be Or Not To Be". She died in a plane crash in 1942 while on a bond drive for the War Effort. It took Clark Cable many years to recover from her death.

Carol Lombard Killed in Western Airlines Crash
L OMBARD IS ONE OF THE VICTIMS - GABLE RUSHES TO SCENE OF FIERY CRASH LOS ANGELES - 1/17/42 - - Army directed searchers on horseback, led by an Indian tracker, toiled over steep snow-packed trails of the Potosi Range in Nevada, seeking the spot were a Los Angeles bound TWA Skysleeper with 22 persons aboard, including film star Carole Lombard and 15 Army fliers, crashed in flames on Table Mountain. Miss Lombard, returning from a defense bond campaign trip to Indiana, and others aboard the plane are believed to have perished. The searching party forced its way up the 8700-foot peak with little hope of finding anything by charred bodies and twisted wreckage. At the foot of the mountain Clark Gable, actor husband of Miss Lombard, waited with the rescue squad of ambulances and motor cars marshaled in the faint hope that some of those on the plane may have survived. The actor, who flew to the scene of the wreck last night immediately after learning of the crash, was reported badly broken up. Guiding the posse of cowboys, Indians and soldiers under the direction of Major W.H. Anderson, executive officer of the Air Corps gunnery school at nearby McCarren Field, were accounts of workers at the Blue Diamond Mine near Arden, NV. They reported hearing last night a terrific explosion and seeing the Table Mountain shroud of snow suddenly lighted by the burst of flame shortly after the plane had passed over the mine.

First Name: Middle: Last: See my tree! Ancestry of Carole Lombard She dazzled moviegoers with her beauty and comic genius. Born Jane Alice Peters, she made her screen debut at age 12. By 16, she had signed a film contract, dropped out of school, and changed her name to Carole Lombard. She appeared in everything from serious dramas to Westerns and still had time for a series of love affairs. Her second husband, Clark Gable, wasn't particularly supportive when Carole offered President Roosevelt their services in supporting World War II efforts. Sadly, at only 33 Carole was killed in a plane crash on her way home from her first bond rally.
