Timely, relevant content key to website success
Several months ago, a local union affiliated to the Canadian Auto Workers waged a successful strike against a major employer. Email and the web proved essential to their success. According to an internal 16-page report summing up the experience, at one point in the dispute, the union website was getting 3,000 hits to its home page every hour. When I read that and contrasted it with what I am seeing on the websites of major British unions, I can see that we have a long way to go. Timely and relevant content is essential if a website is to be worth anything to union members. While most major U.K. trade union sites are now updated at least several times a week, this is not yet good enough. For example, on the eve of the European elections, few union sites have any mention of the need to get out and vote, despite expectations of a very low turnout. Hardly any are highlighting the importance of completely isolating the BNP. One of the very largest union sites has had nothing new to say for several weeks – and back then, its main news story concerned the fate of one of its top officials. This was replaced yesterday by a remarkably uninteresting, technical discussion of an issue that would only affect a handful in the union. The only content that might interest the bulk of the union's membership is months old.

1, 2, 3 to the Zoo
Fun and learning add up to a perfect 10 in this eloquent but wordless counting book. Bright pictures tell the story: each car on the train has one more zoo animal than the one before it, and all arrive happily at the zoo in a dramatic foldout finale. The Very Hungry Caterpillar
This all-time favorite not only follows the very hungry caterpillar as it grows from egg to cocoon to beautiful butterfly, but also teaches the days of the week, counting, good nutrition and more. Striking pictures and cleverly die-cut pages offer interactive fun.

Pancakes, Pancakes!
Jack wants some pancakes, but first he must gather eggs from the chickens, wheat from the farmer, flour from the miller, milk from the cow, etc. His mother shows him how to cook and flip them, and hungry Jack knows what to do with them next. The Tiny Seed
Poetic but simple text and lovely collage pictures dramatize the life cycle of all plants, as one tiny seed grows into an enormous sunflower, which then produces more seeds in its turn.

A selection by the American Library Association as "The Best of the Best from the University Presses: Books You Should Know About", 2004
"Eric Burns' book is as lively and engaging as a tailgate party on a Saturday afternoon, yet as sobering as a car wreck and a diagnosis of addiction. Burns connects America's thirst for drink to some of the most important social movements in the country's history: abolition and suffragism, organized labor, Progressivism, and, of course, temperance and Prohibition. Reading this epic of desire and destruction is to see our story magnified through the bottom of a bottle. It's history by the shot glass."
Bill Moyers In The Spirits of America , Burns relates that drinking was "the first national pastime," and shows how it shaped American politics and culture from the earliest colonial days. He details the transformation of alcohol from virtue to vice and back again, how it was thought of as both scourge and medicine. He tells us how "the great American thirst" developed over the centuries, and how reform movements and laws (some of which, Burn s says, were "comic masterpieces of the legislator's art") sprang up to combat it. Burns brings back to life such vivid characters as Carrie Nation and other crusaders against drink. He informs us that, in the final analysis, Prohibition, the culmination of the reformers' quest, had as much to do with politics and economics and geography as it did with spirituous beverage.

Eric Gibson,
On How a Washington Critic Became Editor of ARTnews
By Barbara Vogt
Eric Gibson became familiar to the Washington art community as staff critic for The Washington Times during the period 1989 to 1993. This month he completes his first year as Executive Editor at ARTnews in New York. How did he make this leap from the relative obscurity of the "number two" newspaper in the nation's capital to the top position at one of the premier art magazines in the world? To find out, KOAN interviewed him in May of 1995.
Growing Up on Two Continents
When asked to retrace his early influences Eric Gibson begins with his childhood spent in Europe. His parents were keenly interested in art and regularly took him to museums during weekends and vacations. It wasn't until Gibson turned 15 that the beginnings of his own fascination with art surfaced, as he visited first a Barbara Hepworth, then a Henry Moore retrospective at the Tate Gallery. "The Moore show in particular was a true epiphany for me. That was when art and sculpture really registered in my mind."

Oregonian, Robert Linstrom Rhayader , "It was a beautiful, strange, haunting work." Who's Who - Music Styles Folk Pianists Pop ... All Articles Eric Jackson
Dividing his time between song writing, performing, teaching a class of lively fifth graders, and enjoying lazy weekend afternoons with his beautiful wife, Eric Jackson never comes up short of things to write about. Raised in the northern region of the “Great Lakes State” and now residing amidst the hustle and bustle of greater Chicagoland, Eric uses his life experiences to create songs that travel a musical landscape, from rural simplicity to urban energy. A pianist since the age of six, Jackson grew up paying close attention to singer/songwriters who shared the same affinity for his chosen instrument. Bruce Hornsby, Joshua Kadison, Marc Cohn, and alternative rocker Ben Folds have all influenced him both melodically and lyrically. Discovering and writing melodies began immediately after learning his first scale. Figuring out radio songs on the piano by ear and reading the sheet music his teacher (also his grandmother) provided him helped to hone his song writing skills. It wasn’t until college that Jackson began singing the songs he had written (mostly to his future wife with no one else in earshot). It was then that he discovered a solid tenor buried beneath his sometimes quiet speaking voice. Upon graduation, marriage, and moving two states over, Eric was ready to perform publicly. An abundance of singer/songwriter venues in and around Chicago provided the outlet for his music to be heard. Positive feedback and an ever growing audience fed his desire to fulfill his dream of recording an album.

Lee Moloney of The Beautiful Sound

It was with considerable disappointment that I was unable to attend this year's Dedication Show due to family commitments. This report has been formed from notes sent to me by Frank, Eric, Andy and Sally, who confirm that everyone had a very nice time, with lots of Ken Griffin tunes played throughout the afternoon.. Lee Moloney started the show on the Allen GW-IV for about 20 minutes. Then I played 45 minutes, followed by intermission. Eric then played about 45 minutes. The Hammond was a BC, not a BV. The tremulant sounded terrible and I ( Frank ) was the only one who used it and for only 2 songs. I did my show on the Allen 311 and got it to closely resemble Ken's Hammond when I used only tibias (flute stops). I finished with one song on the Allen GW-IV. At the end, we did You Can't Be True, Dear
