City Run-Off Election LiveBlogging: The latest from the Littlefield and Coulter camps
Editor's note: This concludes our LiveBlogging for the evening. Thanks for staying up with us John Bailes, Hughes Supply Building, 10:29 p.m. : John Wolfe enters the building to hugs and thanks from Littlefield supporters. He says he had little to do with the victory, though he admits to placing his anti-power structure pamphlet in some 30,000 copies of the Times Free Press over the weekend. Michelle Michaud is outside with other staffers toasting with champagne. A high-level staffer says that had the election been closer, Littlefield supporters would be even more excited than they already are. Aaron Mesh, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, 10:03 p.m. : "I hate to see what happened to Ann like this," says a campaign worker clearing signs off the tables. "I'm heartbroke over it." Everyone in the Roosevelt Room seems a little bit heartbroke. Leaning against the bar, Cessna Decossimo is hesitant to speak. "She's an elegant lady. I'll say that," he begins. "You know that Kipling quote? 'When you meet victory and defeat and treat both imposters just the same.' When she was speaking, I was struck by that quote. I was struck by her integrity." Adam Green is less sanguine. "I'm going to say that only people who lost tonight are the city of Chattanooga," he says. "We did everything right here. We did it honest. We did it fair. We can walk away with integrity. Ron Littlefield and his campaign cannot walk away with integrity.

Draft of a New Book: Thinking about Acting: Logical Foundations for Rational Decision Making The objective of this book is to produce a theory of rational decision making for realistically resource-bounded agents. My interest is not in "What should I do if I were an ideal agent?", but rather, "What should I do given that I am who I am, with all my actual cognitive limitations?"

John Littlefield, state road superintendent
John Littlefield Sr., a lifelong resident of Block Island, died Wednesday, May 31, at the age of 82 at the Scallop Shell Nursing Home in Peace Dale. Mr. Littlefield was state road superintendent on Block Island for many years. When he retired in 1994, he was said to be one of the oldest and, with more than 40 years at his job, one of the longest-serving state employees. He was born Nov. 5, 1917, the son of Lena Maude Briggs and Edgar L. Littlefield, on the family farmstead off Mansion Road that had been in the Littlefield family for many generations. The home was used as a hospital in the Revolutionary War, according to island historian Bob Downie. He was the husband of the late Evalene (Grimes) Littlefield and the brother of the late Maude, Marcus and Jeremiah Littlefield, Edgar Littlefield Jr. and Bella Gardiner.

March 15, 1996 The particular species of liberty for which Milton argues in Areopagitica , according to Paul Dowling's careful dissection of the pamphlet, is not the liberty of unlicensed printing, or the liberty to engage in unfettered civil or religious discourse, but the liberty of philosophic speech in the tradition of the "heathen" philosophersSocrates, Plato, and Isocrates, in particular. Dowling agrees with earlier commentators that Areopagitica is a thoroughly ironic piece of prose, the irony made necessary for Milton's own protection against possible retribution from the Long Parliament, should its members perceive his true purpose. To learn that "philosophic freedom" is what made necessary the rhetorical complexitiesthe disguised allusions, the deliberate errors, the omissions, the obliquitiesthat Dowling explicates in Milton's tract was for me a bit of an anti-climax. But I anticipate. Dowling has two purposes in this book. He first argues for two levels of meaning for
