Double-click on any word and see its definition from Cambridge Dictionaries Online Read the article and then do an activity Malcolm Xwho was 39, and whose name was Malcolm Littlehad just begun to address a meeting of his Organization for Afro-American Unity when he fell to the floor riddled by bullets. A post-mortem examination showed that he had been shot from close range by pistols of at least three different calibres, the murder being apparently the work of several men. In addition to the slaying of Malcolm X, two members of the audience were wounded by the fusillade of shots. Born in Omaha, Malcolm Little was brought up in an institution after losing his fatheran Afro-American preacher who was killed in a street accidentat the age of six. He later drifted to Boston and New York, became a gambler and drug addict, and in 1946 went to prison after a series of burglaries. While in prison his sisters and brothers wrote to him about a "new religion," Islam, being preached to Afro-American men in the United States by Elijah Muhammad, the founder of the sect of Black Muslims a "religion" which proclaimed the superiority of the Afro-American man over the white. The New York Times said that when Little entered prison in 1946 he was "a marijuana-smoking, cocaine-sniffing, zoot-suited, hip-talking hoodlum," but when released seven years later he left gaol as "Malcolm X, an ascetic, a Black Muslim, a highly articulate man who hated the white world."

History of Malcolm X: more than just an angry black man
By Consuela Headrick, Opinion Editor Published: Thursday, February 24, 2005 Editor's note: This column is part one of a two-part series on Malcolm X. Part two will run next week.
On Feb. 21, 1965, the black community lost a hero struggling for the empowerment of a minority people in a nation surrounded by racism, segregation and discrimination. Malcolm X was the embodiment of black nationalism with the determination for blacks to rise up in spite of the inequality that plagued America. But to many Americans today, Malcolm X was nothing more than an extremely angry black man. He was an advocate for pursuing equality "by any means necessary" - a term that scared Americans at the time, and still scares many Americans today.
Born Malcolm Little, Malcolm X was shot standing where he was most dominant - behind the podium. After taking the stage of the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem, he became an easy target. Ready to address 400 of his followers, Malcolm X was gunned instantly. But he was well aware his life was in constant danger because of his strong influence in the black community.
Malcolm X became aware of the Nation of Islam, led by Elijah Muhammad, while serving a prison sentence for larceny, carrying firearms and breaking-and-entering. Though Muhammad's teachings were not in line with the practice of orthodox Islam, he appealed to blacks through hatred for the white man, which moved Malcolm and many others into believing in their own sect of Islam. After serving his sentence, Malcolm X moved to Chicago to live with Muhammad and learned of the religion of Islam. He was responsible for increased interest of Islam among blacks in America. Between 1953 and 1955, Malcolm X became the minister of three Temples. Eventually, 10 new temples were started, and the NOI grew to a membership of 40,000 by the early '60s.

It's the second day of the fifth annual New Yorker Festival, and Gladwell has just finished a detailed reprise of the seven seconds that led to the infamous 1999 fatal shooting of Amadou Diallo. Minutes before, every eye in the room was locked on him as he unspooled the nanodecisions that misled four New York cops into thinking the innocent Guinean immigrant was an armed criminal, resulting in 41 shots, 19 to the chest.

With the right incentive, the unattainable can be attained
While fighting the Germans during WW II, General Patton's Army ran out of fuel and came to a halt. With no fuel to advance against the enemy, as a joke, Patton told his Army that they could have a pass (time off). The next day, a portion of Patton's Army was several hundred miles away in Paris. Somehow the soldiers had found fuel. Proper requirements generate proper results
During the 80's a quality and cost study was conducted comparing military, commercial, and civilian avionics. Commercial avionics had the highest reliability, followed by civilian, then military. The military had the highest cost, followed by commercial then civilian. The military systems were the most expensive to produce, and had the highest failure rate. Under further investigation, it was determined that the problem with the military avionics revolved around the issue of requirements. The military requirements went into how the system should be constructed, by stating specific components in the design. On the other hand, commercial requirements focused on the consequences of failure. If equipment failed during flight, the vendors are required to reimburse airlines for any cost attributable to the failure. For instance, the additional fuel cost as a result of a missed landing opportunity.

Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community
Martin Luther King, Jr.
THE MOST INFLUENTIAL and well known of the Black leaders that emerged in the sixties, Dr. Martin Luther King was president of the Southern Christian Leadership Council. He and his followers organized numerous marches, rallies, and strikes to call attention to the systematic discrimination against minorities that was endemic in American society. His belief was in nonviolent confrontation with the authorities and a prodding of the conscience of the white majority to effect social change. He convinced President Kennedy and later President Johnson to push for legislation to end discrimination and was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1964. On April 4, 1968, King was assassinated in Memphis while there to organize a garbage workers strike.
To Bear Witness TO BEAR WITNESS is a pictorial essay of one of the most celebrated marches of the Civil Rights era. Organized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., supporters attempted to march from Selma to the Alabama State Capitol on March 7th, 1965. That rally was broken up by police who were televised beating men, women, and children, and dispersing the crowds with water cannons and attack dogs. On March 17, United States District Judge Frank M. Johnson, ordered state and county officials "to permit and protect" the marchers on the fifty mile walk from Selma, Alabama, to the courthouse in Montgomery. The National Guard was called out to preserve the peace and on March 25th the protesters began the march. It was estimated that forty thousand men, women, and children completed the journey.
