I've been AWOL since about Monday the 28th of Februrary. I was on home bedrest and so many of you were sooooo generous. Unfortunately, I didn't get to take up you folks on visitation phone offers, etc.
For those of you who don't know, I was pregnant with our second child - about 22 weeks - when I was put to a standard test/ultrasound. The blood flow from the baby's heart to the placenta was being slowed down to a crawl because there was something with the nature. By this Monday (the 7th), the blood flow was often absent in the diastolic phase of the heart pump (filling phase, not pumping phase), plus my blood platets were dangerously low. Therefore, we had to deliver the baby, now noon to be a boy.
They put me under general anesthesia for fear of bleeding too much with a spinal. The neonatologists informed us of the problems and limits of delivering a 26 week old baby! Survival rates only approached 25%.

The play's the thing and I don't care what kind of fame he has gleaned from the films he's been in or that he's rich or that he's undeniably gorgeous in an out-of-the-ordinary way. He is-and I don't use the term lightly or often-breathtaking. Sitting in the back of a 174 seat theatre, you might as well be in the guy's living room, which is about right as the action takes place in his hovel of a room somewhere above Huddersfield. He's not an actor on a stage. He's not a movie star. He's just a guy and he's talking to you. You can see from the back row of the theatre that his eyes shine. They positively glow. With his beard he's like Santaall round glowing cheeks and a twinkle in his eye. But the kind of Santa that, given the chance, you'd shag without a moment's thought. Without a choice really. Ewan's not the only amazing thing about Little Malcolm. The play's the thing. The dialogue is quick-fire and cock-sure. An enormous number of words to have to memorise and to deliver in style. It's an ensemble piece and the ensemble is tremendous. I guess if you're Ewan McGregor and you want to do a play you can get pretty much whichever actors you want. And whoever chose them chose well. There's Sean Gilder, the gawky yet intellectual Nipple, Nicolas Tennant as Ingham, awkward and shy, and Joe Duttine as Wick, the perfect yes-man to Ewan's Scrawdyke. Thank God we get to see it twice.
Liz Bartholomew I can't comment properly on our first viewing of Little Malcolm because I teetered on the edge of exhaustion. Also we were sitting in the last row and although the last row at the Hampstead Theatre may be fairly front and central there was still a psychological barrier. Not so on closing night! I was thoroughly rested and psyched up for the prospect of spending 3 hours mere yards from Ewan McGregor.

Don’t read this if you don’t want to know any more! 2004 marks the 40th anniversary of the writing of Little Malcolm And His Struggle Against The Eunuchs . In an article written exclusively to complement this Octagon Theatre production, playwright David Halliwell gave an insight into the play’s history and detailed his own journey since Little Malcolm was written. This is an extract from a more detailed article which was printed in the programme to accompany the production. Little Malcolm… wasn’t originally set in the Sixties. It was set in 1959, the last year I was a student at the Huddersfield School of Art. However, when impresario, Michael Codron, decided to present the play in 1965, he asked me to change the date, because 1959 wasn’t sufficiently long ago to make the play a ‘period piece’, and people would think it’d been lying in a drawer for six years. So although the play was written in 1964, and took some local colour from the Fifties and Sixties, it isn’t specifically about either decade and its themes belong to all decades.

Their first revolutionary act will be to humiliate the college's principal. Meanwhile, Scrawdyke agonises over his complete failure to attract the attention of fellow student, Ann. Although he is only guilty of failing to fit in with the others' ideas of how they should be, the conspirators decide that Nipple is a spy and he is tried and expelled from the party.
