Transfer from the Hampstead Theatre starring Ewan McGregor with Joe Duttine, Sean Gilder, Lou Gish and Nicholas Tennant. It is winter 1965 and Malcolm Scrawdyke, suspended from art school for being a disruptive influence, plots his revenge on the world. With three loyal acolytes he forms the Party of Dynamic Erection and his icy cold studio becomes their headquarters. Their collective aim is to overthrow authority and establish Scrawdyke as Leader. But as the fantasies become more potent Scrawdyke finds himself at the centre of his own web of destruction.... COMEDY Theatre previewed 20 January, opened 21 January 1999, closed to 13 March 1999 Extracts from the reviews: "So not every young film star need strip to the bare essentials on stage to score a hit with the heavy breathers - let alone more serious theatre-goers. Last night Ewan McGregor, who has shown himself not averse to dropping his trousers in the cause of art, made a most impressive London theatre debut and revealed he is far more than just a pretty cinematic face and body. Playing Malcolm, the crazy, mixed-up art student who wants to rule the world but cannot even screw up the courage to invite a girl to bed, McGregor damps down his famous sex appeal, sports a fuzzy beard and turns in a seriously funny comic performance... It was produced both in the West End and on Broadway and remains, arguably, the author's most successful work. Halliwell won the Evening Standard 's Most Promising Playwright award in 1967. While he remains a prolific writer, notably of radio plays for the BBC, nothing he has done since has attracted the same degree of attention or public interest.
Malcolm Scrawdyke, expelled from his Huddersfield art college, persuades fellow students Ingham, Wick and Nipple to join him in forming the Party of Dynamic Erection. Confident that the youth of the nation will rush to join them, their only worry, as expressed by Ingham, is whether they will have enough chairs. Their first revolutionary act will be to humiliate the college's principal. Meanwhile, Scrawdyke agonizes over his complete failure to attract the attention of fellow student, Ann.
The first Act comprises a series of brilliantly funny set pieces during which the students plan their attack. The production resolutely concentrates on the comic aspects of this while playing down some of their relish in the violence.

This film would probably be produced by C4 or Handmade now. Back then it was financed by the Beatles' crumbling Apple empire, with George Harrison as fledgling executive producer. It won an award in Berlin, died in the West End, and vanished. In fact, David Halliwell's stage satire on Fascism, in the form of an art student's revolt against authority, translated fairly well to the screen, and the themes of paranoia and impotence are handled with enough kick for it to have deserved more success. There are particularly strong performances from the men (admittedly rather old for students), but it is Ayres as the only woman who steals the show. CPe

Little Malcolm And His Struggle Against The Eunuchs
    By David Halliwell
    Octagon, Bolton
Review by David Chadderton The Octagon's artistic director Mark Babych has revived this 1964 play, written by young RADA graduate David Halliwell, in its fortieth anniversary year, and on the fifth anniversary of its famous London revival starring Ewan McGregor. It is apparently based on an incident when Halliwell was expelled from art school, but in his case his parents persuaded the Principal to take him back the following week. Malcolm Scrawdyke - the "Little Malcolm" of the title - does not go back; instead he sets up with his friends his own political party, the Dynamic Erection Party, whose only policies are absolute power and to exact revenge on the Principal of Huddersfield Tech for expelling him. For most of the play, the plans and rituals of the party, from the silly pseudo-Nazi salute and flag to the plot to steal a painting and kidnap the Principal, are put over in a series of very funny comedic set pieces. However the play turns very dark towards the end, just as in Brecht's

Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs
Sweet at the Crown Plaza, Edinburgh Festival Fringe Group: Eton College Productions Ravi Bali This is an abridged version of the David Halliwell play about the revenge fantasy of one Malcolm Scrawdyke and his friends. Expelled from art school for being lazy and disruptive, Malcolm plots vengeance on the school head Mr Allard while coincidentally plotting world domination through his newly formed political organisation the Party of Dynamic Erection. Armed with a fervour for power for no particular purpose, Malcolm and his pals hatch a plot to deal with the bureaucrats who stifle them, and whom they castigate as joyless eunuchs. Boasting a uniformly strong cast of very young actors, this play does a good job of mocking the radical pretensions of the self-deluding, know-next-to-nothing characters. The production does suffer though from being condensed from nearly three hours to an hour and forty minutes. The trimming of much of the play to suit fringe leaves the audience feeling that the resolution is forced rather than flowing from what precedes it. The character development also feels rushed and unconvincing for the same reason. That aside, if a send up of Sixties style radicals sounds appealing or if were a fan of the old TV show Citizen Smith then you will find much here to amuse you.
