The following sources are recommended by an expert whose research specialty is American aviator Charles Lindbergh.
Six Superlative Sources
Berg, A. Scott. Lindbergh. G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1998. Definitive biography and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for biography. First biography written with unfettered access to the Lindberghs' private papers at Yale University Library. Lindbergh, Charles A. The Spirit of St. Louis. Charles Scribner's Sons, 1953. Won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1954 and is still the best account of Lindbergh's historic transatlantic flight, as well as the events leading up to and surrounding it. Lindbergh, Charles A. An Autobiography of Values. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1976. Edited by Judith Schiff and William Jovanovich from Lindbergh's manuscript and published after his death. Best reflection of Lindbergh's philosophy of balance concerning science, individual life, and human values. Luckett, Perry D. Charles A. Lindbergh: A Bio-Bibliography. Greenwood Press, 1986. Excellent starting point for students, because it includes a brief biography, an assessment of Lindbergh's place in American society and popular culture, a thorough bibliographical essay (though dated to 1984), and a chronology of Lindbergh's life. Lots of information in a short, accessible space. Ross, Walter S. The Last Hero: Charles A. Lindbergh. 2nd edition. Harper and Row, 1976. Before Berg's biography, this was the best book about Lindbergh's life. Balanced approach points out Lindbergh's shortcomings while recognizing his remarkable character and achievements.

After Charles Lindbergh's historic nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927, he became an instant American hero and one of the 20th Century's first international superstars. Lindbergh himself wrote several books, and countless pieces have been written about him over the past 70 plus years. The following books and articles were written immediately or shortly after the flight, so they capture the initial impressions of this event before people had a chance to reflect upon it or forget about certain details.
