En 1927 realizó, su primer vuelo trasatlántico sin escalas . A bordo de un monoplano, "El espíritu de San Luis", despegó del Roosevelt Field, de Nueva York, el 20 de mayo y aterrizó al día siguiente por la noche en Le Bourget, de París. Había recorrido 5.800 kilómetros en treinta y tres horas y acababa de ganar una recompensa de 25.000 dólares. En 1932 su nombre saltó de nuevo a la primera plana de los periódicos, pero por una causa trágica: el secuestro y asesinato de su pequeño hijo. En 1941, el presidente Roosevelt criticó su postura neutralista ante la Segunda Guerra Mundial , aunque durante la contienda realizó más de 50 vuelos de combate en el Pacífico.
