Businesses City Store Community Survey I n the summer of 1923, an obscure pilot named Charles Lindbergh was in route from southern Minnesota to see his father campaigning in Shakopee. But as the 21-year-old Lindbergh approached his landing site, he encountered a thunderstorm so severe he was unable to descend. He continued on until engine failure forced him to land in a swampy area near Savage. The soft ground tipped the nose of his newly purchased World War I Curtis Jenny forward, cracking the propeller. Charles Lindbergh crashed his plane in Savage in 1923. Photo courtesy of Savage Public Library. T he uninjured aviator cut himself free from the wreckage. After reviewing the damage, he headed toward a nearby farmhouse for help. He was met by a farmer who had seen the plane crash. Two boys had also witnessed the accident, and spread the news that a plane had crashed in Savage. Before long, the townspeople had gathered to see the felled plane on the site now occupied by Port Cargill. With their help, Lindbergh pulled the plane onto solid ground. The broken propeller, however, kept him from going much further. For three days Lindbergh remained in Savage as he waited for a replacement propeller to arrive from his hometown of Little Falls. He stayed in the Savage depot, and was kept company by depot agent and mayor Charles F. McCarthy.

Charles Augustus Lindbergh
Lindbergh, Charles Augustus (1902-1974), an American aviator, made the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Other pilots had crossed the Atlantic before him. But Lindbergh was the first person to do it alone nonstop. Charles Augustus Lindbergh was born on Feb. 4, 1902, in Detroit. He grew up on a farm near Little Falls, Minn. He was the son of Charles Augustus Lindbergh, Sr., a lawyer, and his wife, Evangeline Lodge Land. Lindbergh's father served as an U.S. congressman from Minnesota from 1907 to 1917. In childhood, Lindbergh showed exceptional mechanical ability. At the age of 18 years, he entered the University of Wisconsin to study engineering. However, Lindbergh was more interested in the exciting, young field of aviation than he was in school. After two years, he left school to become a barnstormer, a pilot who performed daredevil stunts at fairs. On May 20, 1927 Lindbergh took off in the Spirit of St. Louis from Roosevelt Field, near New York City, at 7:52 A.M. He landed at Le Bourget Field, near Paris, on May 21 at 10:21 P.M. Paris time (5:21 P.M. New York time). Thousands of cheering people had gathered to meet him. He had flown more than 3,600 miles (5,790 kilometers) in 33 1/2 hours.

Send this title to your inbox When the twenty-five year old Charles Lindbergh set out on his historic flight to Paris in May 1927, he was not only an experienced pilot, but also a very knowledgeable mechanic. The Spirit of St. Louis was built entirely to his specifications and the engine, developed by Charles Lawrance, was a Wright J-5 Whirlwind. The two men, standing in profile to the plane, display a warmth which appears natural rather than posed for the camera.
Travelling in a single-engine plane, with so little extra weight that even his boots were specially made of lightweight material, Lindbergh made the crossing from New York to Paris in thirty-three and a half hours, a feat which conferred on him celebrity status such as had seldom been seen before.
