    165. Twangin'! Interview: Jimmy LaFave
    Interview.
    http://www.steamiron.com/twangin/int-lafave.html
    Jimmy LaFave
    Interview by Jim Catalano
Over the course of four albums for the Bohemia Beat label, including his latest, Road Novel , Austin singer-songwriter Jimmy LaFave has shown a gift for blending a variety of influences-folk, rock 'n roll, country and, most of all, Bob Dylan. And topping it all off is that voice-sort of a mix between Rod Stewart and Steve Forbert, with the phrasing of Van Morrison thrown in for good measure. Born in Wills Point, Texas, LaFave moved to Oklahoma when he was fifteen, then moved back to Austin ten years ago. Musically, he's a product of both areas. "There's so much music that's come from Oklahoma - Woody Guthrie, J.J. Cale, Chet Baker, Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, Reba, Leon Russell," LaFave says in recent phone call from Milwaukee. "There's a cool music scene around Tulsa and Stillwater that has its own sound, like Memphis or New Orleans. They call it 'red dirt music.'" During his years in Stillwater, LaFave frequently crossed paths with a young upstart named Garth Brooks. In fact, the two shared a couple of band members. "We used to play the same club in Stillwater called Willy's, which is where he got his start," LaFave says. "He was the Wednesday Happy Hour guy, and I would play the Friday and Saturday nights. At the time, he was just starting out. He was a fraternity guy and was on the track team. All he really did was cover song - Dan Fogelburg, lots of George Strait." Was there any clue to Brooks' eventual superstardom? "Not really," LaFave says. "He was always a nice guy; he wasn't a jerk or anything. He was a business major, so he was really good at promotion. One year, he went into a local studio and recut the 'Devil Went Down to Georgia' as 'The Cornhuskers came down to Stillwater' before a game with Nebraska and sold it out in front of the stadium. I'm not surprised that when he went to Nashville he fit so well, because he's pretty good at being willing to do anything it took to make it. Whereas I probably wouldn't last too long in Nashville - if they told me what to do, I'd say 'forget it.'"

Thanks, Jeff JS Biography James Maitland Stewart was born May 20, 1908 in Indiana, PA, USA, and passed away in Beverly Hills CA, USA, as the result a pulmonary embolus on July 2, 1997. His gentle, small town demeanor served him well in portraying a variety of characters in his long and distinguished career. He grew up Indiana, Pennsylvania and never forgot his old hometown. He was an amateur magician and appeared in Triangle Club shows while at Princeton, where he studied architecture. After graduation, classmate Joshua Logan persuaded him to join the University Players, whose members included Henry Fonda and Margaret Sullavan. Fonda and Stewart roomed together when they went to work on Broadway in 1932 and films in 1935. Margaret Sullavan insisted he be given roles in her films, which was a great help to him. His "aw shucks" appeal also made him a favorite with casting directors. Great roles and honors began in the late 1930s and continued throughout his career. When he won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1940, he sent it to his father in Indiana, PA, who put it in his hardware store. The award remained there for 25 years. He was the first Hollywood star to enter the service for World War II, joining in 1940. He was initially refused entry into the Air Force because he weighed 5 pounds less than the required 148 pounds, but he talked the recruitment officer into admitting him. He eventually became a colonel and earned the Air Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Croix de Guerre and seven battle stars. In 1959, serving in the Air Force Reserve, he became a brigadier general, the highest ranking entertainer in the U.S. military.

Web www.entertainmentavenue.com Anyway, Jimmy Page joined the Black Crowes as they took the stage. So much for the Crowes playing a few tunes of their own to start. They opened the show with "The Wanton Song" and transitioned into "Celebration Day". From this beginning the crowd knew it was in store for what they wanted to hear, Led Zeppelin tunes. I was curious how the format of the show would work out. How many Crowes songs would there be? What Led Zeppelin stuff would be attempted? Any surprise tunes? It tuned out they played only a couple of Black Crowes’ songs, a wide variety of Zeppelin tunes got a work out, and a couple of cover songs popped up. "Misty Mountain Hop" and "Custard Pie" were up next before the band took a breather. Of an interesting side not to this reviewer, Jimmy Page played several different Les Paul’s throughout the show, although only switching after every couple of songs. On the other hand, the Crowes’ guitarists switched guitars almost every song. Perhaps the young guys are more picky about their tuning than the Master? As far as sharing the guitar duties, Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes often joined Page in playing twin lead, while at other times throughout the show, Page let Robinson and Audley Freed, the Crowes other guitarist, take several leads. All three seemed to be enjoying themselves playing off one another.

A short interview with Jimmy Martin
    conducted by Jim Moss 7-27-99:
    Part 1 (more to follow)
Please understand that Jimmy Martin is a larger than life personality, a fact that
is apparent from the minute he picks up the phone. Jimmy Martin shouts all of
his words at you. It is somewhat like interviewing Foghorn Leghorn. I called
Jimmy in the early morning before he had a chance to get involved with
anything... around the house... like chores.. I think Jimmy Martin is a REAL Bluegrass Personality of Colossal Proportions. He is from the old school and has no problem speaking his point of view. Although I felt that at any point Jimmy could have become angry with my questions, I was constantly aware that I was talking to the person who had created much of the hardest sounding Bluegrass ever written. This is a guy who makes no compromises. I have found something interesting happening. Some people, upon their first reading of this interview, reacted to things that they thought Jimmy had said, but had not. This is quite interesting. JM

Nat Hentoff "Not only has Porterfield given us the most complete and accurate account of Rodgers that we are likely to get; he has also provided some of the most valuable insights about early country music, and the South, that can be found in any published work."

On my listserv lists, I'm known as "The Big Dog". Here's why.
This is my new, revised, and hopefully, improved web site. I'm going to try to make it more personal and more interesting. I want to use it to tell a little more about my interests and hobbies.
Books I love books. I don't think that money spent on books is often wasted. My wife and I are both constant readers and you can tell this by coming into our house, as you'll generally find books laying around our house, sometimes in piles. It's probably my biggest hobby. I'll read fiction, non-fiction, sports, just about anything that I can get my hands on. I guess mystery/action/adventure stories are my current favorites. Some of my favorite authors are Larry McMurtry ( "Lonesome Dove" ), Tom Clancy ( "Red Storm Rising" ), James Grisham ( "A Time To Kill" ), and John D. McDonald ( Any of the Travis McGee Series I have recently become acquainted with Rick Riordan and his "Tres Navarre" character, which has a nice Buffett tie-in (and he gave RACAfest and my old Buffett list a nice plug in his book, "The Devil Went Down to Austin". I recommend Rick's books also. I used to really enjoy the Spenser novels by Robert B. Parker, and still do read them, but don't think they're nearly as much fun as they used to be. Spenser's just gotten to be too "nice".

    Actor Jimmy Smits
    Jimmy Smits and Kim Basinger
    Star in ``Bless the Child''
Principal photography has begun on the supernatural thriller "Bless the Child," starring Kim Basinger and Jimmy Smits. The Paramount Pictures presentation is directed by Chuck Russell and produced by Mace Neufeld. Kim Basinger stars as Maggie O'Connor, a woman whose well-ordered, practical universe has no room for such vague concepts as good and evil. But when her six-year-old niece, Cody, is forcibly abducted, Maggie learns that evil is very real indeed. For Cody is more than simply "special"; she manifests extraordinary powers that the forces of evil have waited centuries to control. Aided by an investigator who specializes in supernatural phenomenon, played by Smits, they together take on the forces of darkness in a battle for Cody's very soul in this riveting modern-day thriller. Basinger made her motion picture debut opposite Robert Redford in Barry Levinson's "The Natural." Since then she has appeared in more than 20 feature films. In 1998, Basinger received an Academy Award(tm) for her role in the critically acclaimed "L.A. Confidential," based on the James Ellroy classic crime novel of the same title. The film, directed by Curtis Hanson, earned nine Academy Award(tm) nominations and also earned Basinger a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a BAFTA nomination.
