Buffalo Return to the Plains Jimmy Lafave By Steve Brooks frog@io.com Jimmy Lafave's more a rock act than a folk one these days - he's come along way since it was just him strumming his guitar at Chicago House in Austin - but like Springsteen or Mellencamp, he's covering much of the same populist ground folkies cover. LaFave's roots are in Oklahoma, the birthplace of the original modern singer-songwriter, Woody Guthrie. LaFave seems less obsessed with highways and open spaces in BUFFALO RETURN TO THE PLAINS than his last album HIGHWAY TRANCE. His third CD finds the artist emerging from that trance, realizing he is no longer young and acknowledging burnout. "I think I've been fooling myself my whole lifelong," he sings in the album opener, "Burden to Bear," "living life like a one night stand." LaFave longs to believe in the road and its mythology of redemption. "Going Home" is a sweet lullaby to a dreamer asleep in the passenger's seat as they cross the prairie. The anthemic title cut celebrates the drifters of the great depression, praying they'll survive the era of strip malls and cable TV. That vision of renewal, however, seems hopelessly outdated in the album closer, "Worn Out American Dream." There are two dreams in BUFFALO RETURN TO THE PLAINS, both equally American. One's the Horatio Alger ideal of upward mobility, while the other is the Kerouac/Whitman romance of downward mobility. Lafave surveys Newt Gingrich's America and realizes there's no romance left in poverty -just desperation. Same assessment goes for religion, money and politics.

You have to wonder what James Stewart felt like, trapped inside Jimmy Stewart. Yes, he played a wide variety of men. He did comedy. He did drama. When he got older, into the grizzled years, he played men with harder hearts, with fewer points of entry to their pain than Jefferson Smith and George Bailey. Henry Fonda, his great friend since their young manhood, could play a villain every now and then. One wonders if Stewart longed to change parts with Fonda in a film like Firecreek But Jimmy Stewart, a villain? Preposterous. Play-acting. His only villainous role came at the beginning of his career, in 1936's After the Thin Man , long before he was enough of a star for anyone to notice, or protest. Stewart's character could begin weak, but he'd be forced into finding his strength. Start cynical but eventually be forced to care. Find redemption. Learn the error of his ways. The two directors who used him best were Frank Capra and Alfred Hitchcock. And maybe Anthony Mann, who guided Stewart into his maturity in early '50s westerns.

Before Jimmy Durante became one of the most famous and lovable entertainers of the Twentieth Century, he was a hot piano player and bandleader. Durante was greatly influenced by Scott Joplin and had his first success in show business as a Ragtime piano player starting around 1911. He was billed as "Ragtime Jimmy" and played in New York City and Coney Island. Durante was part of the same wild crowd of early White jazz musicians as the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and Johnny Stein. When the New Orleans Jazz style swept New York by storm in 1917 with the arrival of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band Durante was part of the audience at Reisenweber's on Columbus Circle. Durante was very impressed with the band and invited them to play at a club called the Alamo in Harlem where Jimmy played piano. The band was soon the hottest thing in show business and Durante had his friend Johnny Stein assemble a group of like-minded New Orleans musicians to accompany his act at the Alamo. They billed themselves as "Durante's Jazz and Novelty Band". In late 1918 they recorded two sides for Okeh under the name of the New Orleans Jazz Band , they re-did the same two numbers a couple of months later for Gennett under the name of Original New Orleans Jazz Band , and in 1920 the same group recorded again for Gennett as Jimmy Durante's Jazz Band . In 1921, Durante collaborated with an African-American songwriter by the name of Chris Smith on the song "

But for those who met Smits, MFA '82, during his daylong reminiscence at the Center for the Theatre Arts (CTA) Dec. 1, the lasting impression will be of a dedicated actor, a gracious guest and a glitz-free personality whose sincerity was genuine, almost touching. Qualities you might look for, say, in a friend. In fact, the actor's first return visit here grew out of a 16-yearlong friendship with his former acting teacher, Stephen Cole, associate professor of theater, film and dance at Cornell. Cole had invited Smits to Ithaca while the former star of "NYPD Blue" was visiting family and friends in New York. With the final, much-hyped episode featuring his TV character's death behind him (the show aired Nov. 24, one week prior to Smits' visit), Smits was at liberty to visit Cole and Cornell for a low-key, nostalgia trip. Leery of publicity, as a rule, Smits consented to a loose schedule, limited to the theater arts community, with a few exceptions: He took an impromptu tour of Ithaca's Hangar Theatre; allowed for a brief interview with some members of the local print media; availed himself of photo opportunities for students and faculty alike while on campus; and made time for an intimate roundtable discussion with about two dozen students from Cornell's Latino Studies Program.
