Byron Cook - July 2005 - In addition to my work at Microsoft Research, I've accepted an offer to be an Associate Faculty in the Chalmers computer science department and the formal methods group Speaking of Chalmers and the formal methods group : Congratulations to by and , the authors of MiniSAT . MiniSAT beat the competition at SAT 2005 . Furthermore, they did it in style: MiniSAT is less than about 2000 lines of extremely clear C++ code (this 2000 lines includes empty lines and comments). This is a real contribution. gave a great invited talk at ESCAR on MiniSAT. Andreas Podelski is visiting me for three months in Cambridge.

Tornadoes, storms and flooding kill 52
USA Today
Tornadoes, 100-mph wind gusts, torrential rains and flooding killed at least 61 people and left a swath of destruction through east Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia since Saturday, Mar. 1, and Sun. Mar. 2. President Clinton signed a disaster declaration Sunday for nine Arkansas counties, where Gov. Mike Huckabee described damage as of "apocalyptic proportions." The hardest hit area in Arkansas was the Sardis community of Saline County, west of Little Rock, with 10 confirmed dead. Rescue workers meticulously searched through the twisted debris of a demolished mobile home park in Sardis on Sunday, while many residents returned to what was left of their homes for the first time since the storm. Nearly 400 people were injured in hundreds of homes, businesses and other structures were destroyed or damaged along a 260-mile path from Hempstead County in the southwest to Greene County in the state's northeastern corner. At least 10,000 electricity customers had no power. Clinton toured the devastated areas of his home state Tuesday, Mar. 4. "The storm hit places and people we know well, and our hearts and prayers are with everyone who lost loved ones, homes and businesses," he said.

For 10 days the Space Shuttle Columbia streaked through the skies, and for the last 7 of those days, hams around the world were sent emotionally into orbit when they heard Dr. Garriott's voice break their squelches calling Earth-bound stations. Owen K. Garriott
Owen K. Garriott exercised his expertise as a solar physicist on two space missions, the 59-day Skylab 3 flight in 1973, and an 11-day trip aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia a decade later. He was born November 22, 1930, in Enid, Oklahoma. He received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1953 and a Master of Science and Doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1957 and 1960. Following graduation from Oklahoma, Garriott served as an electronics officer aboard several destroyers while on active duty with the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1956. From 1961 until 1965, he taught electronics, electromagnetic theory and ionospheric physics as an associate professor at Stanford. NASA selected him in his first group of scientist-astronauts in 1965 and he completed flight training a year later. Garriott returned to space November 28, 1983, aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, which carried for the first time in its cargo bay the 23-foot-long Spacelab, a cylindrical laboratory built by the European Space Agency. The six astronauts worked in round-the-clock shifts, with Garriott serving on one team with Pilot Brewster Shaw and biomedical engineer Byron Lichtenberg. The other team consisted of Commander John Young, astronomer Robert Parker and Ulf Merbold, a West German physicist. They conducted medical, astronomy, Earth survey, atmospheric and materials processing experiments. With all going well, NASA extended the planned 10-day mission by a day to gather more data.

It is a small planet in the void of the Universe. One planet. One common home. It is a home which, with the help of space technology, has become surveyable in a single view, a home which we must be careful not to destroy. In fostering this awareness lies perhaps the truly epochal meaning of today's space technology. "I wish this new space laboratory and its mother ship, the Shuttle, and their combined crews good flights in space and many happy returns to solid Earth." - Dr. Wolfang Finke, Chief, Space and Aviation Research, West German Ministry for Research and Technology, December 4, 1981, at the presentation to NASA of the first Spacelab flight unit in Bremen, West Germany. CHAPTER THREE: Meet the Crew Meet a new breed of space travelers! They are called payload specialists and they are the first non-career astronauts in space. Typically they are scientists whose only reason for going on a space flight is to carry out some specific research in their own field of expertise.

John W. Young
John W. Young is co-holder of a record for the most space flights, six. He flew on Gemini 3 and 10, orbited the moon on Apollo 10, walked on the moon on Apollo 16, and commanded two space shuttle missions, STS-1 and STS-9. He was born in San Francisco on Sept. 24, 1930. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering with highest honors from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1952. He joined the Navy after graduation. He served on a destroyer for a year and then took flight training and was assigned to Fighter Squadron 103 for four years, flying Cougars and Crusaders. After training at the Navy Test Pilot School in 1959, he was assigned to the Naval Air Test Center for three years, setting time-to-climb records in a Phantom jet. He later was maintenance officer of Phantom Fighter Squadron 103. He retired from the Navy as a captain in 1976. Young was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1962. He flew with Gus Grissom on the first manned Gemini mission, Gemini 3, launched March 23, 1965. During five hours in orbit, they accomplished several firsts for a manned spacecraft: changing the orbital path, operating a computer and lifting reentry. On Gemini 10, July 18-21, 1966, Young and Mike Collins executed a dual rendezvous with two separate Agena satellites and Collins took a space walk. On Apollo 10, May 18-26, 1969, Young operated the Command Module while Tom Stafford and Gene Cernan flew the separated Lunar Module to within 10 miles of the moon. Young commanded Apollo 16, April 16-27, 1972, with Charlie Duke and Ken Mattingly. Young and Duke explored the lunar highlands at Descartes, drove a Lunar Rover 16 miles and collected 200 pounds of moon rocks.

This is what it looks like, guys! The team got it Saturday in St. Louis, Missouri, along with a five-foot, 200 lb bronze trophy, while astronaut Mike Melvill and pilot Robert Scherer flew overhead in the Beechcraft Starship, one of the chase planes that accompanied SpaceShipOne on its flights.
Also in St. Louis were Paul Allen, several congressmen, NASA representatives, Erik Lindbergh, Amir Ansari, Peter Diamandis, Robert K. Weiss, (Vice Chairman, X PRIZE Foundation and Hollywood Producer) and other.
Here goes the full press release from the event:
"Ten million dollars was awarded at 10:30 a.m. (CT) Saturday to the American Mojave Aerospace Team, led by research aircraft developer Burt Rutan, and financier Paul Allen, for its successful completion of the history making ANSARI X PRIZE.
The team prevailed over 25 additional teams from across the globe in developing and flying a privately financed, manned spaceship to an altitude above 100km.
