Dr. Byron K. Lichtenberg
Dr. Lichtenberg has flown twice into space as a U.S. Astronaut. His first flight was aboard the space shuttle's Spacelab 1 Mission (1983), where he conducted 72 experiments in 5 scientific disciplines including life sciences, materials sciences, Earth observations, astronomy and solar physics, and upper atmospheric and plasma physics.
Lichtenberg's second spaceflight was aboard the ATLAS-1 Spacelab Mission in March 1992. During this mission, the crew conducted 14 experiments in the areas of upper physics, space plasma physics, solar physics and ultraviolet astronomy. This mission created the first ever artificial auroras from space with the injection of an electron beam in tot he lower atmosphere.
Dr. Lichtenberg was also the President and co-founder of Payload Systems, Inc., specializing in engineering and scientific support of human spaceflight experiments. He was instrumental in obtaining the first U.S. commercial agreement to do research on the Russian Mir space station.

Hang Time!
I'm flying in a Boeing 727 jet when I suddenly find myself floating through the airplane's cabin. End over end, I spin as the other passengers tumble and burst into laughter around me. Is something wrong? No, I could hardly be better I'm weightless!

Zero Gravity Corp. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has generously given me a seat on one of its "parabolic" flights that simulates the microgravity of space flight. The company, also known as ZERO-G, is the only one in the country licensed to offer weightless flights to the general public and was cofounded by former Space Shuttle astronaut Byron Lichtenberg. NASA provided ZERO-G with technical information on how to fly weightlessly and recently inked a deal to complete research flights with the company.
The gravity-defying flights use parabolas, special flight patterns in which the jet makes a steep climb and then smoothly "pushes over" into a shallower descent to create 25 seconds of weightlessness. One description I've read compares a parabolic flight to skydiving inside of a giant aluminum soda can.

National Space Society
Sends Open Letter to Clinton This "Open Letter" to President Clinton was just one of the many grassroots communications developed for NSS's "On to Mars" campaign. In a brief time, signatures were gathered from individuals associated with the Society and the space movement, as well as from space supporters in the on-line community. Early deadlines and the amount of space available in Ad Astra (the Society's award-winning magazine) allowed NSS to only print a sample of the thousands of electronic signatures received, however, the final version of the letter delivered to the President prior to his State of the Union Address on 4 February contained a 15-page attachment of almost 2,000 electronic signatures including occupations and titles. This final version of the letter was also seen by Congressional leadership, members of the aerospace industry and other key opinion leaders.

What I do: I'm a research engineer and neuroscientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. Neurolab is my sixth Spacelab mission. For the past decade I have been Director of the Man Vehicle Laboratory in MIT's Center for Space Research. Our group studies the physiological and cognitive limitations of humans in aircraft and spacecraft, and tries to develop new ways of improving human-vehicle effectiveness and safety. Some of what we do also has medical applications. We take an interdisciplinary approach, utilizing techniques from manual and supervisory control theory, estimation, signal processing, biomechanics; cognitive, computational and physiological neuroscience; sensory-motor physiology, human factors, and biostatistics. Many of our students are engineers from the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Some are from other departments, including the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, where I have a joint appointment. This year, I've been teaching a seminar on the case for human planetary exploration. I also lead a new multi-investigator neurovestibular research program in the National Space Biomedical Research Institute. For many years, I've been fascinated by human vision and the inner ear balance system, and wondered why people sometimes experience disorientation and nausea when flying in air- and spacecraft.

Since Rutan bagged the 10 million X Prize, the X Prize Foundation (XPF) and the World Technology Network (WTN) have been working on a series of new technology prizes, the WTN X PRIZES "Holy Grail" Competitions. These might include cures for major diseases, teleportation, molecular assemblers, cold fusion and a wide variety of others with truly major societal implications.
Wild horses
Today, the X PRIZE Foundation elected three new members to its Board of Trustees: J Craig Venter (Celera) Eric Anderson (Space Adventures), and Takafumi Horie (Livedoor).
Space Adventures
Founded in 1998 by Eric Anderson (32) of Denver, Colo., Space Adventures is the only company currently accepting deposits from suborbital clients, currently totaling over $2,000,000 (USD). Previously, Eric was the co-founder of Starport.com, an astronaut-endorsed space education and entertainment web site (Starport.com was sold to SPACE.com in June 2000). Craig Venter Founder of Celera Genomics, Craig Venter (58) of Salt Lake City, became famous for running a Human Genome Project on its own for commercial purposes, using shotgun sequencing technology in 1999. DNA from 10 individuals was used by Celera to generate the sequence of the human genome; one of the donators was Venter.

Web www.universetoday.com Greg Olsen Will Fly to Space Summary Jul 28, 2005 ) US entrepreneur Greg Olsen is going to get his trip to space after all. Space Adventures announced this week that Olsen will be joining the crew of the Soyuz TMA-7 spacecraft, currently scheduled for launch on October 1, 2005. Olsen will remain on board the station for 8 days, and run a few experiments on remote sensing and infrared astronomy - whenever he can drag himself away from the window. He was originally scheduled to fly much earlier, but Russian doctors forced a delay because of health concerns. Full Story Gregory Olsen. Image credit: Space Adventures. Space Adventures, Ltd., the world's leading space experiences company, announced today that American technology entrepreneur Gregory Olsen, Ph.D. has been confirmed to the Soyuz TMA-7 crew which is currently planned for launch to the International Space Station (ISS) on October 1 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Dr. Olsen will be joining the 12th Expedition Crew which will also include NASA astronaut William McArthur and cosmonaut Valery Tokarev.
Eric Anderson, president and CEO of Space Adventures, the company which organized the spaceflights for the world's first private space explorers, American businessman Dennis Tito and the "First African in Space" Mark Shuttleworth, said, "I am extremely pleased that Greg has been named to the Soyuz TMA-7 crew. He is in the process of completing the cosmonaut training program, and as declared by the Russian space agency, he's in excellent condition and we enthusiastically look forward to his launch."

Departing NASA Administrator Richard Truly said Tuesday he experienced little of the discord with the Bush administration over space policy that supposedly led to his dismissal. ""I did not perceive any differences that were large enough to be noteworthy," Truly said in an impromptu news conference. The former astronaut and naval officer, whose three-year tenure at NASA's helm ends this week, was at the Kennedy Space Center to witness the launch of the shuttle Atlantis. ""There have been many times over the last two or three years when I argued forcefully for my thoughts on a particular issue," said Truly. ""But so have others. That is the way government is supposed to work, and frankly, I'd make those same arguments again." Truly was forced from his post last month after a series of conflicts with the National Space Council, a Cabinet-level policy-making group chaired by Vice President Dan Quayle.
