  • Autopen machines often vibrate when they are in use creating a very distinctive "shaky" signature. Click here to see Examples of shaky signatures that these machines often produce. Autopens come to an abrupt halt at the end of a letter and frequently leave a noticeable spot of ink at the ends of letters and words. Lines in the Autopen are of the same thickness. Autopens do not always create identical signatures, if the item being signed is moved accidentally (or deliberately) small differences will be noticeable in the final signature. Small variations from known Autopen patterns does not mean the signature is authentic, if - when you ignore the variation - other parts of the signature match the Autopen pattern exactly, then what you are looking at is an Autopen. One thing that must also be kept in mind is that the use of pens with thicker or narrower nibs will make them appear very different - until you examine them closely and compare them to known Autopen patterns.

Remarks During a Conference Call With Chancellor Helmut Kohl of the Federal Republic of Germany and Crewmembers of the Space Shuttle Columbia December 5, 1983
The President. Greetings from Washington. Chancellor Kohl is with us all the way from Athens, Greece; along with you astronauts hovering in space, with me here in Washington, and the whole world listening, this is one heck of a conference call. Seriously though, this space shuttle mission represents the enormous potential available to mankind. The Spacelab, in which the experiments are being carried out, was designed and built by the European Space Agency. The Federal Republic of Germany and other European contributors can be especially proud of this achievement. It is fitting that on this the German-American tricentennial a German astronaut is part of the shuttle team. The shuttle is demonstrating that technology can be used to bring people together in a new spirit of enterprise and cooperation to better their lives, ensure the peace of mankind. I know Chancellor Kohl agrees with me that this shuttle mission, with its German and American crew, represents the highest aspirations of our two peoples. Chancellor Kohl, this is a great day. Perhaps you could give us your thoughts on this marvelous occasion.

You'll have to lighten your wallet. A seat on one of Zero-G's Fort Lauderdale-

Ready to play astronaut for a day? All you'll need is a flight suit and plenty of Dramamine. Welcome to the best new roller coaster in the solar system. The flight commander, his uniform covered with mission patches, stands at a lectern in the darkened room, clicking through PowerPoint images of the operation. There are facts and figures, medical warnings, diagrams of ascents and G-forces. Trainees in blue flight suits scribble notes in nervous anticipation of their first step into the final frontier. "We're gonna talk about bathrooms," the commander says. "There are no bathrooms up there. Things tend to slosh around." For $3,750 a head, Zero-G gives civilians a taste of astronaut-style weightlessness aboard G-Force One, a Boeing 727 the company has retrofitted with a padded cargo bay and modified hydraulics. Zero-G was founded by former astronaut Byron Lichtenberg and Peter Diamandis, chairman of the X Prize Foundation. After five years awaiting FAA approval, the first commercial flights launched last September. The flight principle is pure Newtonian physics: Climbing upward at 45 degrees, the plane traces a huge parabolic arc, with a controlled acceleration earthward (read: freefall) from 34,000 feet. At the top of the arc the plane's occupants are suspended in midair for about 30 seconds. It's the same floating sensation as cresting a rise in a car at about 200 mph.

    Young, John Watts (1930-)
Veteran American astronaut who flew on Gemini 3 and 10, orbited the Moon on Apollo 10, walked on the Moon on Apollo 16, and commanded two Space Shuttle missions, STS-1 and STS-9. Born in San Francisco, Young received a B.S. in aeronautical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1952 before joined the Navy. He served on a destroyer for a year, then took flight training and was assigned to Fighter Squadron 103 for four years, flying Cougars and Crusaders. After training at the Navy Test Pilot School in 1959, he was assigned to the Naval Air Test Center for three years, setting time-to-climb records in a Phantom jet. He was later maintenance officer of Phantom Fighter Squadron 103 and retired from the Navy as a captain in 1976. Young was selected as an astronaut in 1962 and flew with Grissom on the first manned Gemini mission, Gemini 3, in 1965. During five hours in orbit, they accomplished several firsts for a manned spacecraft: changing the orbital path, operating a computer and lifting reentry. On Gemini 10, in 1966, Young and Michael
