Liberace American musician and entertainer known for his music, his trademark candelabra, his flamboyant lifestyle and highly affected mannerisms. Gay and over-the-top, he was well-liked by people who worked with him; they found him considerate and unpretentious. He was an early television performer who was considered TV's first "matinee idol," winning two Emmys, six gold albums, two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a listing in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's highest paid musician and pianist, once earning more than $2 million for a 26-week season. Liberace's style earned him the title of "Mr. Showmanship." He moved to New York in 1940, and began to play in clubs around the city. The night club bookings took him to the Persian Room in the New York Plaza Hotel as an intermission pianist. Seven years later, he returned to the Persian room, this time with an oversized grand piano and the first appearance of his trademark candelabra, inspired by the 1945 movie, "A Song to Remember." He had also followed Paderewski's advice and changed his name to simply "Liberace." In 1948, he was hired to perform at the Last Frontier in Las Vegas, one of two hotels there at the time. In 1950, he made his film debut as a honky-tonk pianist in "South Sea Sinner" with Shelley Winters. Then, while playing at a club in San Diego, a television producer discovered him and a television show was created as a summer replacement for the Dinah Shore show. The 15-minute weekly show appeared in 1952 at NBC and managed to get a large national audience. The next year, he filmed a weekly half-hour show that ran for five years and made his name a household world, earning him two Emmys.

page: Mr. Showmanship, the Candelabra Kid, Guru of Glitter, Mr. Smiles, The King of Diamonds, and Mr. Box Office, Wladzui "Walter" Valentino Liberace was for many the epitome of camp, excess, and flamboyance, yet he was also a gay man who steadfastly refused to acknowledge publicly his sexual identity. Born into a musical family on May 16, 1919 in West Allis, Wisconsin, Liberace learned to play the piano by ear at the age of four. As a teenager, he played popular tunes in local Milwaukee movie theaters and nightclubs as Walter Buster Keys. He also continued his classical training, debuting as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony in 1940. Sponsor Message.
After a brief stint with the Works Progress Administration Symphony Orchestra, Liberace attended the Wisconsin College of Music on scholarship. An encore request after a 1939 classical recital altered Liberace's career-path. His performance of the popular tune "Three Little Fishes" in a semi-classical style proved an immediate audience favorite.

Something Even More Spectacular: The Liberace "Play-A-Like" Contest
The spirit of Liberace (and signature candelabrum) reign over the "Play-A-Like" Contest If it's understatement you're after , don't go to the Liberace Museum. If you admire self-effacing modesty, stay away. Are you a person of quiet tastes? Be warned. The strip mall at the corner of Tropicana and Spencer will assault your tender sensibilities. And don't expect any apologies , either. Liberace was the guy who coined the phrases, "I'll cry all the way to the bank," and "Pardon me while I go slip into something even more spectacular." Liberace spent his life accumulating not only accolades for his flamboyant piano playing, but also antique furniture, dazzling costumes, ostentatious jewelry, famous pianos, and glitzy cars. He opened his museum in 1979 to display some of his fabulous possessions, and now, 25 years later, a whole new generation is keeping his rhinestone-studded legacy alive.

You'll be able to ogle Liberace's flamboyant costumes, dazzling stage jewelry, gilded candelabras and outrageous cars, plus rare and antique pianos that can only be described as works of art. As you stroll through the Liberace Museum , which encompasses not one, but two buildings, you will see Liberace's Rhinestone Car, customized in the style of a Duesenberg Roadster. In the Awards Gallery there are plaques, citations, honors, and letters of commendation given to Liberace during his long career. You can take a glimpse into Liberace's personal life as you walk through a reproduction of his bedroom located in his Palm Springs residence. See rare pieces of Liberace's Moser crystal from Czechoslovakia-one of only two sets in the world made by hand. Who has the other set? Why, Queen Elizabeth II of England, of course! In the piano gallery there's a 1920's Chickering grand piano that once belonged to George Gershwin. Comedian Shecky Greene's wife, who knew Gershwin, donated it to Liberace. You'll also see Liberace's famous blue and gold Steinway grand piano, along with his nine-foot mirrored Baldwin concert grand piano. He played the Baldwin at his farewell performance in 1986.

Liberace Liberates Persian Room Guests
Wearing a miniature-piano ring fashioned of platinum and studded with diamonds and playing what is said to be the world's largest concert grand piano, Liberace (pronounced Liber-AH-chee) returned Thursday to the Persian Room of the Plaza. The evening also marked the local debut of the young dancers, Marge and Gower Champion, and the return to the Plaza bandstand of Joel Herron and his orchestra.
By way of introduction may I say that Liberace, like Hildegarde, hails from Milwaukee, that he looks like a cross between Robert Alda and Cornel Wilde of the movies, that he dropped his first name. at the suggestion of the late Paderewski (who did the same) and that he has 188 miniature pianos. I might also add that he has a press book that is so extravagant in material that's It's difficult to choose between adjectives.

Rhinestones. Do we need to say more? Liberace Museum: Full Review
We've always loved the Liberace Museum. Not because of some deep greater meaning behind the rhinestone covered exhibits (or the entertainer himself for that matter), but simply because more than just about anything else in Vegas, this place screams Vegas. Come on! An entire museum devoted to the flash and crass that was Liberace?! In a town that delights in flash and crass? It don't get no better than that ladies and gentlemen.
For those of you who don't know, Liberace was one of the biggest stars of decades gone by. His virtuoso level piano playing secured his position as a musical luminary but it was his outrageous, over-the-top stage shows that really established his identity. Whether he was arriving onstage in a rhinestone covered Rolls Royce or flying across the stage suspended by wires in some bejeweled and feathered get up, Liberace epitomized spectacle and in many ways is to be credited (and perhaps blamed) for all of the giant special effects laden pop concerts hitting an arena near you this summer. That's right Britney, Liberace did it first.

Liberace was born in West Allis, Wisconsin , in a musical family. He had a twin, who died at birth. He was a classically trained pianist with wide experience playing popular music as a young man. As his classical career developed, he found that his whimsical encores, playing pop songs and marches, were going over better than his renditions of the classical repertoire, so he changed his act from classics with a bit of pop, to pop with a bit of classics. The great pianist Paderewski , a family friend, advised him to follow his own example and bill himself under his last name only.
