Liberace was a genteel, half innocent culture whore, gambling the soul of history on the craps table of showbiz, a strange, inbred cross between a historian and a pimp. He worshipped nobility, but did it with only half the cultural education necessary to pull it off. But he had just enough class to fool his audience of middle-class, unquestioning, mostly conservative housewives and their tag-along husbands. Liberace knew enough about Victorian culture to know which goblets he just had to own, but not enough to know that any proper owner of fine cut crystal would never place them on the same table with the world's most gauche sequinned napkin rings. Liberace didn't know when to quit because Liberace didn't know where class began and where gauche left off.

    The Spectacle King
In Vegas, a subtle but telling war bubbles underneath the surface of the collective consciousness - a war that is about deciding who is the true king of Vegas: Elvis or Englebert, Tom Jones or Wayne Newton, Sigfried and Roy or Liberace. Conduct an informal interview of metropolitan cabdrivers and waitreses, and you'll find that most contemporary Las Vegans mysteriously, unaccountably insist that Siegfried and Roy own the crown, always and forever. But these people are thinking only of crowd sizes, not eternal class. Naturally Siegrfied and Roy draw more people because the Vegas of today has more visitors than the Vegas of yesterday. What we need to know in order to understand Vegas and the influence that extravagant showmanship has had on American life is this: Who set the stage for the mass acceptance of outrageous flamboyance that became a defining gesture for our times? In other words, who in Vegas' history best defines

Liberace "People ask how I can play with all those rings, and I reply, 'Very well, thank you'." More in RED below - May 05 GHHHHHRRRRRL. Liberace, or Lee to his confidantes, or "Miss Thang" to you and me... desperately felt he needed to keep a tight lid on his homosexuality. He didn't dare risk offending his dear fans in any way. Hello! The clue phone is ringing. He ended up playing a bizarre cat and mouse game with the tabloids for his entire life. He even sued and WON a case when a tabloid implied he was gay. Go figure. The first substantial break for the press was in 1983, when Scott Thorson sued Liberace for support. They were a couple for 5 years. The press coined the term "Galimony" during that trial, which Scott won. Legend has it that Thorson was awarded a penthouse atop an office building at 7461 Beverly Blvd, that Liberace owned. Findadeath.com friend Bob Barnes clarifies that Scott didn't exactly win the suit. It was settled out of court for an estimated $95,000, far less than the millions he was suing for. The palimony part of the suit was dropped at the very beginning because "contracts of a sexual nature" were inadmissible, or some such nonsense. Also, Scott did not win that penthouse in the suit. He was forcibly removed from it the very night that Liberace was performing at the Oscar ceremony. That was the basis for a large portion of the suit against Liberace. Scott was suing to get back his personal property still in Liberace's possession.

B orn Wladsziu Valentino Liberace, Liberace was more show-biz phenomenon than musician. A classical child prodigy, he gained real attention when he started to throw in pop novelties like "Three Little Fishes." Never one to put taste before popularity, by the early 1950s, Liberace was a highly successful performer on stage, radio, and TV. While he did not initially adopt the flamboyant, glittering dress and pageant that later became his trademark, his musical style stayed pretty much the same throughout his career: mostly pop music played with classical flourishes with an occasional popular classic (like "Moonight Sonata") thrown in. Although he had a string of successful albums on Columbia in the early 1950s, he became primarily a performer after appearing as the lead in the film "Sincerely Yours" in 1955. Watching a kinescope of Liberace performing on television in the 1950s, you realize how jaded audiences have become forty years later. Resplendent in white tie and tails, with a beautiful head of wavy hair (the kind the Chordettes asked "Mr. Sandman" to bring their dream guy with) and brilliant white teeth, Liberace simply played and beamed. Once in a while he'd sing, once in a while he'd bring on his brother, George, to play along on violin. But that's all that went on, and people loved it. Down Beat magazine offered this left-handed compliment in 1955: "Let's get one thing straight! Liberace is a skilled artist. But his art is comedy, not music."

Liberace: Secretly a top
Let there be no doubt: this man could play the piano. Born Wladziu "Walter" Valentino Liberace in 1917, he held the world's record for highest paid musician until his death in 1987 from AIDS. This death, shrouded in secrecy and picked apart by a greedy press, capped a career that was gaudy, brilliant, filled with the heart of Las Vegas ... and one where the sexuality of a great musician was the centerpiece of controversy for decades. In 1957, Hollywood Confidential , an extremely popular (10 million+ circulation) tabloid published a cover story on Liberace: "Why his song should be 'Mad about the Boy'", wherein it said that Liberace had made advances on a press agent (male) in LA and Dallas. Liberace sued, and won when it was shown he wasn't in Dallas at the time of the alleged advances. The chutzpah of this seems astonishing in retrospect, but Liberace had a reputation to defend, and that he did. SSN 472-14-4916

    The Liberace of Baghdad
In 2004 Sean McAllister spent eight months in Baghdad filming Samir Peter , once Iraq's most famous pianist, now playing in a hotel bar for journalists and freelance security forces. The film won the World Documentary Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival a week after its screening on BBC Four. What did you think of the film? Has it changed your perception of the situation in Iraq? Send us your comments using the form on the right and we will publish a selection below. Sean, I had the oppportunity to see your award-winning film at Sundance last week. I found it to be, simply put, fantastic. It didn't, however, change my perception of the Iraq situation. I am one of the few Americans, I think, that sees the 'bigger picture'. I await more documentaries from you. I think the US could use a good dose of reality every now and then. Our media is so controlled - it's sad. Samir, your music is incredible. I love music, and I especially like the keys and minor tones in your music. The world needs more artists that write in the way you do. I am especially fond of the piece you wrote while in the midst of a bombing. Truly inspirational. Take care, both of you and God Bless. US pianist, singer, and entertainer. His original name was Wladziu Valentino Liberace. His most besotted fans called him Lee. His Italian father had been a French horn player and played for the Milwaukee Symphony. He had also been a bit-part actor in silent movies, but then concentrated on being a grocer. His Polish mother had been a concert pianist before her marriage. His brother George played the violin. Liberace was a piano child prodigy and performed for the Polish pianist Ignace Jan Paderewski at the age of seven. At high school he had a musical combo called The Mixers By the age of 14 he was playing popular classics in cocktail lounges and nightclubs, first under the name Walter Busterkeys. In 1936, at the age of 17, he made his debut as a classical pianist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra playing Franz Liszt's First Piano Concerto. In 1939 he ended a classical performance with a surprise encore of Three Little Fishes which he played with a knowing smirk and winks. The audience loved it; he had found the way to fame.

Oddly folksy and campy at the same time, Liberace and his show very much defined a certain strata of showmanship in the post-World War II era. Born Wladziu (Walter) Valentino Liberace in suburban Milwaukee, he was interested in music from age four, and won a scholarship to the Wisconsin College of Music when seven, studying there for seventeen years. Reputedly at the advice of family friend and renowned pianist Paderewski, the youngster decided to someday likewise be known by one name. Receiving classical training, he began to perform pop hits in local clubs as a teen. By the early 1940s he was establishing himself in New York night spots: ads offered a phonetic guide for his fans ("Libber-ah-chee"). Playing cocktail lounges and intermissions for big bands, he received a rave Variety notice in 1945 while appearing at the Persian Room, which lead to strings of dates across the United States. He won a small role in the film South Seas Sinner (1950).

    Introducing Liberace
American musician and entertainer known for his music, his trademark candelabra, his flamboyant lifestyle and highly affected mannerisms. Gay and over-the-top, he was well-liked by people who worked with him; they found him considerate and unpretentious. Liberace was an early television performer who was considered TV's first "matinee idol," winning two Emmys, six gold albums, two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a listing in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's highest paid musician and pianist, once earning more than $2 million for a 26-week season. Liberace's style earned him the title of "Mr. Showmanship." He moved to New York in 1940, and began to play in clubs around the city. The night club bookings took him to the Persian Room in the New York Plaza Hotel as an intermission pianist. Seven years later, he returned to the Persian room, this time with an oversized grand piano and the first appearance of his trademark candelabra, inspired by the 1945 movie, "A Song to Remember." He had also followed Paderewski's advice and changed his name to simply "Liberace." In 1948, he was hired to perform at the Last Frontier in Las Vegas, one of two hotels there at the time.
