An American Boy
Darden Asbury Pyron
The Days of the Understated Suit Liberace's successful lawsuit against the London tabloid, the Daily Mirror, was a critical moment in his career. It also provides a vivid picture of the closeted world of the 1950s. This excerpt is from Chapter Nine: "You Can Be Sure If It's Westinghouse." The Daily Mirror New York Times headlined its one version of the trial with "Liberace Denies He Is Homosexual." He underestimated his counsel. Indeed, the Fox opened well by linking William Conner's diatribe against the American showman to a pattern of smearing Englishmen: his screed had besmirched even the royal family. Conner's slander of Liberace was only the tip of the iceberg that constituted this venal, reckless journalist, Beyfus proclaimed. He called Conner "a literary assassin who dips his pen in vitriol, hired by this sensational newspaper to murder reputations and hand out sensational articles on which its circulation is built." It was the same charge that John Jacobs had used in suing Hollywood Confidential two years before. Through Liberace, the English court had the chance to redress all these transgressions. "Here's a piano player," Beyfus declaimed, "giving these people a chance to fight back."

About Dr. Hammargren and his Home.
Castillo del Sol, as it is now called, started out as a $45,000 house built in 1969 from a standard plan as a frame stucco, four bedroom house. the large addition built in 1975 was placed over the top and in front of the house to accommodate an observatory and planetarium. This was built to local code and without a variance, as it met the conditions for ranch estates that limit height to 35 feet. Several lawsuits have been dismissed after it was proven that the building met applicable codes and that the doctor was not a "Peeping Tom".
The doctor had long wanted to study astronomy, but never had the time, money, or the inclination to sit outside in the cold Minnesota nights to study the stars. His science interests are broad, ranging from biology to medicine to mathematics, anthropology and psychology. His special focus is the history of scientific thought. Most old structures such as the pyramids and Stonehenge were oriented to directions relevant to the positions and motions of the sun, moon and stars. The specific discipline that studies this combination of archaeology and astronomy is called archaeoastronomy. Lonnie fancies himself as an amateur archaeoastronomer.
Above the entrance is a stairway to the top of the Mayan pyramid. This is modeled after the Castillo pyramid in the Yucatan. It gives rise to the name of the house, Castillo Del Sol, the Castle of the Sun.

I was lucky enough to see Liberace before he died. The concert was a weird, wild, wonderful spectacle, and it left me awestruck. I couldn't believe that a entire performance (not to mention a several decades long career) could be construed from such unrestrained, indulgent superficiality. The majority of the show consisted of Liberace parading around the stage in outrageous outfits to the "oohs" and "ahhs" of the audience, which was dominated by women over the age of forty. Early life and stage name
Liberace was born in West Allis, Wisconsin and grew up in a musical family. He had a twin who died at birth. He was classically trained as a pianist and gained wide experience playing popular music. Lee followed the advice of famous Polish pianist and family friend Paderewski and billed himself under his last name only. As his classical career developed he found that his whimsical encores, in which he played pop songs and marches, went over better with audiences than his renditions of classical pieces, so he changed his act to pop with a bit of classics . During the mid and late 1940s he performed in dinner clubs and nightclubs in major cities around the United States. edit
Television
He had a network television program in the which for a time had higher ratings than I Love Lucy . His brother George led the program's backing band. He became known for his extravagant costumes, personal charm and self-deprecating wit. His public image became linked with one ever present stage prop, a silver candelabra perched on his piano. By 1955 he was making $50,000 per week at the Riviera nightclub in
