Bookhaunts.net
Exclusive interview with Christopher Moore: Author of Practical Demonkeeping Coyote Blue, Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story, Island of the Sequined Love Nun, and The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove. Chris's new book is finished - LAMB , the Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal, will be released early in 2002, probably on Groundhog's day. Chris will tour then, but there are no set dates yet. Film rights have been acquired for Practical Demonkeeping and Lust Lizard, also Chris is currently collaborating on the production of Coyote Blue , great to see one in the pipeline! Details can be found on the official Chris Moore web site Questions Answers Ishie wants to know if you do parties and if you'll be her man slave? Absolutely. Sheila - What are your favorite hobbies when you are not writing? Well, I like to read novels, but I like to scuba dive, work out at the gym,
eat pizza, and I'm learning to sea kayak (so far it's a lot more like
falling out of a boat, but I'll probably figure it out.) Ishie and Kelly want to know if the hobbies can include them?

(785) 864-5065; email: The presence of abnormal deposits of filamentous tau is thought to be a major part of the neurodegenerative process. For example, the location and amounts of tau pathology in specific regions of the brain correlates with the type and degree of observed dementia in patients. In addition, several mutations in the tau gene have been shown to be directly linked to increased tau pathology and neurodegeneration in familial cases of frontotemporal dementia. TTau is a microtubule-associated protein that was originally discovered to associate with microtubules and provide stabilization for these structures. However, in the late 1980's, it was discovered that a "hyperphosphorylated" form of tau was the major component of several pathological structures in Alzheimer's disease known as neuropil threads, neurofibrillary tangles, and neuritic plaques. Further characterization of these structures revealed that the tau present in these structures had self-associated into filamentous structures known as straight filaments and paired-helical filaments. Since that time, numerous diseases have been identified as having significant tau pathology such as Pick's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, and corticobasal degeneration. The major goal of this laboratory is to understand the molecular mechanisms that lead to the polymerization of the microtubule-associated protein tau into pathological structures observed in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. The main thrust of research will involve the detailed investigation of the effects of tau phosphorylation on its ability to polymerize, bind microtubules, and stabilize microtubules. This research will be accomplished using several molecular biology and biochemical approaches, including site-directed mutagenesis, laser light scattering, electron microscopy, and in vitro binding assays.

SOME NOTES ON CHRISTOPHER ALEXANDER
By Dr. Nikos A. Salingaros.
  • BIOGRAPHY PUBLICATIONS BUILDINGS INFLUENCE ON COMPUTER SCIENCE ... CHRISTOPHER ALEXANDER'S IDEAS ON OFFICE FURNITURE AND INTERIORS
  • BIOGRAPHY Christopher Alexander was born in Vienna, Austria, and raised in Oxford and Chichester, England. He graduated from Cambridge University, where he studied Mathematics and Architecture. He then obtained a Ph. D. in Architecture at Harvard University. For his Ph. D. Thesis, later published as the book Notes on the Synthesis of Form , he was awarded the first Gold Medal for Research by the American Institute of Architects. Since 1963 he has been Professor of Architecture at the University of California at Berkeley, and Director of the Center for Environmental Structure. In 1980, Professor Alexander was elected member of the Swedish Royal Academy; and in 1996 he was elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Christopher Alexander is a Trustee of the Prince of Wales's Institute of Architecture.
PUBLICATIONS Dr. Alexander is the author of numerous books and papers. He has initiated a new approach to architectural thinking, in which the same set of laws determines the structure of a city; a building; or a single room. He has spent most of his life in searching for these laws. His approach to solving this universal problem takes advantage of scientific reasoning, and totally opposes other, unscientific approaches based on fashion, ideology, or arbitrary personal preferences. This is so different from the way architecture has been taught since the second world war that it causes conflicts with established architectural schools.

Christopher Dietrich looks back at this charged classic. Volker Schlöndorff, who went on to direct the famous Die Blechtrommel The Tin Drum , 1979), made his debut with an indictment of the military system and its dehumanization, Der Junge Törless Young Torless , 1966). The film, faithfully adapted from Robert Musil's 1906 novel, a study of sadism and masochism among students at an Austro-Hungarian boy's academy, is a parable of fascism and its origins, evoking the Stimmung (atmosphere) and claustrophobic horror of the military system itself.

  • 158. Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593)
    Brief biography.
    http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc24.html
Christopher Marlowe Born the same year as Shakespeare , Christopher Marlowe was to become the first great poet of the theatre's second great age. His life, much like the lives of his characters, would be short and violent. The son of a shoemaker, Marlowe attended King's School, Canterbury and Corpus Christi College where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1584 and his Masters degree three years later. According to university records, Marlowe disappeared frequently during his last years at school, exceeding the number of absences permitted him by statute and putting his degree in jeopardy. Apparently, much of this time was spent in Rheims among the Catholics who were plotting against Queen Elizabeth's protestant regime. Because of his absences and the fact that he refused to take holy orders, the university refused, for a time, to confer his degree, but the authorities intervened, and the degree was eventually granted. Although we cannot be certain, Marlowe may have fought in the wars in the Low Country after graduation. What we can be certain of is that he settled in London in 1587 and began his career as a playwrightalthough he may still have been in the employ of the secret service as well. The young poet plunged himself into a social circle that included such colorful literary figures as Sir Phillip Sidney and Sir Walter Raleigh. He shared a room with fellow playwright
