Expertise and Research Interests
I am also interested in the etiology of contralateral breast cancer (CBC). The results of one of our recent pilot studies support our hypothesis that tamoxifen may promote the growth of estrogen receptor-negative CBC, while it inhibits estrogen receptor-positive contralateral tumors. We are currently further investigating this relationship in a large case-control study. Also, I am currently working on a cohort study of CBC in women diagnosed with a first breast cancer under 45 years of age. Since various tumor markers were assessed on the first tumors of these women, I am evaluating the relationship between the expression of these markers, in particular c-erbB-2, and risk of CBC.
Another research interest I have is in examining disparities in cancer stage, treatment, and survival by race/ethnicity. Among breast cancer cases, we have found that compared to non-Hispanic whites, Blacks, Native Americans, Hawaiians, Indians/Pakistanis, Mexicans, South/Central Americans, and Puerto Ricans have 1.4 to 3.6-fold greater risks of presenting with stage IV breast cancer. Blacks, Mexicans, and Puerto Ricans were also 20 to 50% more likely to receive a first course of surgical and radiation treatment not meeting the 2000 National Comprehensive Cancer Network standards. Additionally, Blacks, Native Americans, Hawaiians, Vietnamese, Mexicans, South/Central Americans, and Puerto Ricans had 20 to 200% greater risks of mortality following a breast cancer diagnosis. We are currently investigating disparities in cancer stage and survival by race/ethnicity among patients with other types of cancer, including colorectal cancer and oral/pharyngeal cancers.

Smith Welcomes End of Ordeal for Li Shaomin Author of Chinese Scholars Resolution Says That “There Are At Least Five Others Still Being Held in China Today Who Must Be Released” Washington, D.C. — Congressman Chris Smith (NJ-4), author of the House Resolution (H.Res. 160) which called for the immediate release of Dr. Li Shaomin and other scholars being held by the Chinese government, today welcomed the news of Li Shaomin’s impending freedom, while cautioning that, “there are at least five others still being held today who must be released.”
“China’s arrest, imprisonment, isolation, trial, conviction and expulsion of Dr. Li Shaomin should serve as a chilling reminder of this regime’s brutal behavior, a continuing pattern of abuse that extends not only to their own citizens, but now even to ours,” said Smith, the Vice Chairman of the House International Relations Committee.
Smith, whose human rights work and criticisms of communist China extend back two decades in Congress, chaired a congressional hearing last month to spotlight the plight of American citizens and permanent residents being held by the People’s Republic of China (PRC.) Smith was also responsible for delivering the crayon-written letter from nine-year-old Diana Li, Li Shaomin’s daughter, to President Bush asking for his personal intervention in this case.
“Dr. Li Shaomin is an American citizen who the Chinese callously but purposively used and abused in order to send a message to other academics, consultants and businessmen: if you dare to question this regime, we will come after you, we will arrest, imprison and torture you, regardless of your citizenship,” said Smith. “While Li Shaomin will soon be allowed to leave China, it is not likely that he will be able to return there anytime soon, whether for business or family reasons, nor can he have any sense of security at his job in Hong Kong,” he said.

Freed Scholar Li Shaomin Meets With Smith To Thank Him For His Tireless Efforts Smith Calls For Continued Pressure On China Until “Every Hostage Is Released” Washington, D.C. — Congressman Chris Smith (NJ-4), Vice Chairman of the International Relations Committee, today welcomed Dr. Li Shaomin back to the United States following over five months of captivity in the People’s Republic of China. Dr. Li, along with his wife Liu Yingli and daughter Diana, met with Smith to thank him for his efforts on their behalf. "China's arrest, imprisonment, isolation, trial, conviction and expulsion of Dr. Li Shaomin should serve as a chilling reminder of this regime's brutal behavior, a continuing pattern of abuse that extends not only to their own citizens, but now even to ours," said Smith. “We must continue to put pressure on China’s dictators until every hostage is released,” he said. Smith, whose human rights work and criticisms of communist China extend back two decades in Congress, chaired a congressional hearing last month to spotlight the plight of American citizens and permanent residents being held by the People's Republic of China (PRC.) Smith was also responsible for delivering the crayon-written letter from nine-year-old Diana Li to President Bush asking for his personal intervention in this case. Bush later talked directly to China’s leader about releasing Li Shaomin. “Dr. Li Shaomin is an American citizen who the Chinese callously but purposively used and abused in order to send a message to other academics, consultants and businessmen: if you dare to question this regime, we will come after you, we will arrest, imprison and torture you, regardless of your citizenship," said Smith. "While Li Shaomin was allowed to leave China, there are still others who remain captive, waiting for their release," he said.

I work in the lab of Dr. Rebecca Klaper. Our research focuses on the physiological and molecular effects of environmental contaminants in various trophic levels of lake and stream food webs. Some of our current models include lake sturgeon ( Acipenser fulvescens ), fathead minnows ( Pimephales promelas ), northern pike ( Esox lucieus ), and zooplankton ( Daphnia spp. ). The overall goal of this work is the development of molecular markers for ecological risk assessment. Recent areas of interest are:
  • the effects of mercury exposure on differential gene expression and reproductive development in fathead minnows. the effects of low-dose pharmaceuticals on behavior and differential gene expression in fathead minnows. the physiological and behavioral responses of Daphnia spp.

    Protein Expression Laboratory
More than 400 papers were accessible online during 2004 that used Gateway recombinational cloning. Most of these used GW to construct protein expression plasmids for use in E. coli or eukaryotic cells. Interestingly, more than 10% of the GW papers in 2004 used GW in plants, presumably because plant vectors tend to be large, which complicates cloning with restriction enzymes and ligase.
