Stephen Lewis was recently named Maclean's Canadian of the Year and awarded the Pearson Peace Medal for his outstanding achievements in the field of international service and understanding. He holds 20 honourary degrees from Canadian universities and in 2003, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada, Canada's highest honour for lifetime achievement.
From 1984 through 1988, Stephen Lewis was Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations, where he chaired such ground breaking committees as the first International Conference on Climate Change. From 1995 to 1999, Mr. Lewis was Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF and in 1997, he was appointed by the Organization of African Unity to a panel to investigate the genocide in Rwanda. His recent work at UNICEF is merely an extension of a life-long dedication to social causes and improving the human condition. In 2001, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Stephen Lewis as his Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa.
In the light of the recent tsunami disaster, his observations on the role of Canadians and libraries in world issues could not be more timely.

Personality of the Week: Stephen Lewis
Stephen Lewis is UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa The former Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations, Stephen Lewis dedicates his life today to saving lives in Africa, traveling constantly, organizing conferences, public awareness programmes and staging events to raise funds and begin initiatives to cure what he describes as "carnage" - namely the ravages caused by HIV/AIDS on sub-Saharan Africa. Not only has Stephen Lewis launched himself into his work selflessly and tirelessly, through his position in the UNO and through his foundation, the Stephen Lewis Foundation, he has also proven inspirational to others, who turn to him for advice when implementing their own programmes.

Melancholia and Moralism: Essays on AIDS and Queer Politics , by Douglas Crimp. 2002. MIT Press, 5 Cambridge Center, Cambridge, MA 02142-1493. 319p., illus., bibliog., index. ISBN 0-262-03295-3. $29.95. (Descriptors: Political Aspects; Gay men) Douglas Crimp provides us with a unique collection of essays that confronts the conservative gay politics that has replaced AIDS activism that was so prominent in the 1980s and early 1990s. He touches on everything that has happened and been written showing us that melancholia has set in, resulting in gays becoming complacent in coping with AIDS. He stresses that the AIDS epidemic is far from over and that "queer politics" is greater now than it has ever been. Before AIDS, gays were sexually active and showing the world that they were virile young men who were intent on having a great time. AIDS changed that and these same men pulled back from the sexual antics and began the era of explaining to the world what AIDS is doing, not only to gays but to the rest of the population as well. This has now changed and gays are slowly drifting back to the ways of the pre-AIDS era, resulting in a steady increase in new HIV positive cases.

Press Briefing by Stephen Lewis, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa Noon, March 3, 2004
EMBARGOED UNTIL 12:30 NEW YORK (17.30 GMT) Astonishingly, that support is not forthcoming. Hence this alarm. The World Health Organization needs $200 million, over 2004 and 2005, to put 3 by 5 in place. So far - and we are into the third month of 2004 - donor governments have been unwilling to contribute the money. WHO must have the money to train 100,000 people, to marshall the groups of experts to provide technical assistance, to establish the logistical supply lines, to improve and upgrade every aspect of the health systems infrastructure. Without the money, 3 by 5 will be a pipedream. How do we explain it to the generations of the future? Just three months ago, I was in Botswana, observing their free provision of anti-retroviral drugs. The waiting-room of the Princess Marina hospital was packed with hundreds of people calmly waiting for treatment. Botswana has the highest known prevalence rate in the world, but everywhere I went, hope was in the air because people living with AIDS knew they had a chance to prolong their lives. The process of testing, and the provision of the drugs has been a slow, arduous experience, with painful lessons along the way, but twelve thousand people are now in treatment, and adherence rates are incredibly high. It will be much tougher in other, poorer countries, than it is in Botswana, but Botswana gives a vivid glimpse of what can be done, with resources, when a country resolves to do it, and the world rallies in support.

Personal medical service pilots: modernising primary care?
John Wilmot GP in Warwickshire and Senior Lecturer, Centre for Primary Health Care Studies, University of Warwick The Labour government in the UK has set out to modernize public services. One policy example relevant to primary care is provided by the pilot schemes for Personal Medical Services (PMS), which started in 1998. The editors of this book, through their work with the King's Fund in London, have evaluated some of these pilots. These experimental schemes were designed to overcome

I think when you've travelled around a lot in Africa, you understand something that many people here don't recognize: the extraordinary power that is Africa at village level - at community level. Stephen Lewis I want to be cautious here, because Africa is a hugely complex continent and you can't really generalize about it. Stephen Lewis I was working for the Socialist International, after I left university in 1959, as a researcher. Stephen Lewis I'm in a great rage now, as I understand how many lives we have lost. Stephen Lewis I'm not big on titles, but I think any title that is associated directly with the Secretary General will gain access.

In his HSPH Commencement Address in the Kresge Courtyard on June 9, Stephen Lewis, Special UN Envoy for HIV-AIDS in Africa, presented a personal and wrenching picture of family devastation on that continent and the possibility for public health professionals to make a difference in survival.
