Merrill was never quite satisfied with his Capitol recordings, but they still sound as terrific as ever and represent the true link between the hillbilly boogie piano playing of the late Moon Mullican and the driving rock'n'roll sound of Jerry Lee Lewis.
His career has been brilliantly documented by Cary Ginell, who wrote the liner notes to the double CD put out in 1990 by Bear Family Records (BCD 15505 - the only flaw being the inversion of the two versions of 'Nola'). Merrill reworked many standards for Capitol, a lot of them coming from 1958 sessions which remained in the can until the aforementioned release.
When I met him at his house in '87 (see photo below), he was in high spirits (as he always seems to be), answered my questions in a very friendly manner and played me some great stuff at the grand piano. Paul Carrack, the keyboard player in the excellent UK group, Squeeze, had visited him a few weeks before me and he couldn't believe that he was so famous overseas. May he rest assured that his popularity among good music lovers will carry on for years to come !! And even if he did NOT play on Wanda Jackson's marvelous 'Let's Have A Party' (it was Big Al Downing at the 88). PS : The death of Merrill Moore on June 14, 2000, after a long battle against cancer, was sad news indeed. As a tribute to the man and musician we loved so much, we decided to share with you part of the unissued session he cut for us in '87. He sure didn't need any sidemen to let it rock : his sense of rhythm was astounding.

  • Jerry Lewis speaks the truth The veteran comedian is in trouble with the militant disabled for using words like "cripple" and "pity." They're wrong; he's right. By Lorenzo W. Milam Sometimes we forget that comedian Jerry Lewis started his career 50 years ago in a nightclub in New Jersey by acting like what we used to call a "retardee." He would cross his eyes, galumph about, drool and give his straight man Dean Martin a big wet kiss (on the mouth). I even remember him falling off the stage and clambering back up the steps, acting like a regular gooney bird. It's an act that he continued, in his movies, long after he'd split from Martin. It wasn't just funny it was pee-in-your-pants funny. As he has for years, Lewis continues to headline the annual telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. It's no accident that "Jerry's kids" sometimes move about not unlike the comedian of yore. The "Merck Manual of Medical Information" defines "muscular dystrophies and other myopathies" as "muscle weakness causing waddling gait, toe-walking, lordosis, frequent falls, and difficulty in standing up and climbing stairs." Sounds just like the Jerry Lewis I remember from back in the day. He is, in more ways than not, one of his beloved kids.

    Jerry Lewis
Email this page to a friend with a personal message I don't consider myself star struck, but when Jerry Lewis walked into the restaurant I grabbed my husband's arm and (quietly) exclaimed "Oh my, that's Jerry Lewis!" We talked about how Lewis has lent not just his name, but has given so much of his time and talent to raise funds for medical research. Inspired, my husband wrote a check for Lewis' upcoming Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) telethon. We asked the

Expanded Sound is a Barbershop Comedy Quartet of "unparalleled dimension". Entering our thirteenth year of hilarity, we invite you to share some of our experiences and enjoy an internet look at what we do. It has always been a hobby, singing barbershop quartet music, but it would appear that some quartets take on a life beyond a simple after-hours activity. Please explore our website and see what happened when four overweight singers teamed up to make music and laughter.
    Our Mission
Pure and simple: We have fun singing songs and making people laugh! If we can get a good meal out of it, so much the better.
    Company Profile
Expanded Sound, Inc. is the corporate structure of our quartet. The four original members of the quartet are the owners and officers of the corporation. We have a non-traditional answer to the frequently posed question, "How many are in ya'lls quartet?" There are actually seven current members of the quartet, since we have an extra tenor, lead, and bass to enable us to meet more performance requests. Expanded Sound is registered with the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America ( SPEBSQSA ) and each member of the quartet is also a member of that organization. The quartet arose from the ranks of the Saint Charles, Missouri Chapter of SPEBSQSA. There we sing with the

(CNN) For decades, Jerry Lewis wowed audiences with his unique brand of physical comedy in movies such as "The Ladies' Man" and "The Nutty Professor." But behind the gags, the funnyman was hiding a secret that was no laughing matter. "Everything and anything I ever did for 37 years had the kind of pain under it that would kill most people." Lewis, 77, said the years of pratfalls in films and onstage severely damaged his spine. For relief, he said he relied on heavy doses of pain medication and sought advice of medical experts from around the world. "I spent a half-million dollars just traveling, doing, trying [and] bringing doctors to me," Lewis said.

Encyclopedia Article Lewis, Jerry Lee , born in 1935, American rock singer and pianist, known for his wild, piano-pounding performances. Born in Ferriday, Louisiana, Lewis showed an early talent for music. His father mortgaged the family home to buy him a piano, later hauling the piano in his pickup truck when Lewis began performing at age 15. At age 16 Lewis enrolled in a Bible institute in Waxahachie, Texas, from which he was soon expelled. In 1956 Lewis traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, and signed with Sun Records, an influential southern label that launched the careers of rock singer Elvis Presley and country singer Johnny Cash . With Sun he recorded two top-ten hits, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” and “Great Balls of Fire,” both in 1957. They are examples of the rockabilly style, a mixture of

From "What if I had Muscular Dystrophy?" Parade magazine, Sept. 2, 1990 "The very human desire for cures . . . can never justify a television show that reinforces a stigma against disabled people." It was 11 years ago when those lines appeared on the opinion page of the New York Times September 3, 1981. Labor Day. On the tube, the annual Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon was in full swing. The article was by Evan J. Kemp, Jr., now chairman of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. At the time Kemp was Director of the Ralph Nader-inspired Disability Rights Center. "Aiding the Disabled: No Pity, Please," read its headline. Evan J. Kemp, a man with one of the neuromuscular diseases the Muscular Dystrophy Association said it was fighting to cure, was criticizing its star-studded fundraiser. Kemp was also criticizing MDA's star and savior, comedian Jerry Lewis.
