Futurejoy's Poetry Kent State
Decades ago...
I remember so clearly
pink bubble-gum chewing
and sweaty hand-holding
wondering if I would ever be kissed
ever be missed
time would never tell.
What exciting days they were
watching late night news
never dreaming we would lose what ever happened to you my lemming friend? Protesting and demanding law and order reprimanding we never knew our cause would have such an effect and now you elect to drown those dreams in wine. Joyce Lynn Lewis Portraits of Life The National Library of Poetry, 1996 When Love Is New When love is new the sidewalk is bouncing and traffic sings and fat men reading magazines stop and stare at two when love is new. When love is new the flowers are dancing and trees whisper and little creatures in the woods pause and glance askew when love is new. When love is new the ocean is smiling and lobsters chant and mermaids keep the secret of lovers that they view when love is new. When love is new the wheat fields are marching and cattle croon and scarecrows turn a blind eye to all that lovers do when love is new.

Lewis Wallace
Although he would have much preferred to be remembered as a highly successful military hero, Lew Wallace has been thwarted in this ambition and is best known as an author. Born in Indiana, he had worked as a clerk and early displayed a fascination for Mexico which would affect him in later years. During the Mexican War he served as a second lieutenant in the lst Indiana but saw only minor action. In 1849 he was admitted to the bar in his native state and seven years later entered the state senate.
With the outbreak of the Civil War he offered his services, and his assignments included: adjutant general of Indiana (April 1861); colonel, 11th Indiana (April 25, 1861); colonel, 11th Indiana (reorganized August 31, 1861); brigadier general, USV (September 3, 1861); commanding 3rd Division, District of Cairo, Department of the Missouri (February 14-17, 1862); major general, USV (March 21, 1862); commanding 3rd Division, Army of the Tennessee (February 17-June 1862); commanding 8th Corps, Middle Department (March 22, 1864-February 1,1865 and April 19-August 1, 1865); and also commanding the department (March 22, 1864-February 1,1865 and April 19-June 27, 1865).
At the close of the war he sat on the court-martial which tried the Lincoln conspirators and presided over that which sent Andersonville chief Henry Wirz to the gallows. He then joined a movement to aid the Juarez forces against Maximilian in Mexico. He tried to raise money and troops and even accepted the title of major general from the Juarez group. On November 30, 1865, he resigned from the U.S. service, but his Mexican venture collapsed and he realized little of the money which he had hoped to gain from it. In later years he was governor of the New Mexico Territory and a diplomat to Turkey. As a prolific writer, who often drew upon his own experiences, he is best remembered for

WYNDHAM LEWIS AND VORTICISM
THE iconoclastic Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957) was England's leading avant-garde artist of the early Twentieth Century. He was the founder and main practitioner of Vorticism, a sort of English Futurism , which he proclaimed in the magazine Blast Lewis was a complex figure with many interests and talents besides art. Despite the authoritarian sympathies he expressed in the 1930s, his sheer intellectualism continues to intrigue a wide audience of fans and academics alike. Lewis was a friend of Ezra Pound's , and connected with and strongly influenced by the philosopher and cultural critic, T E Hulme . One of Lewis' keenest disciples was Marshall McLuhan, the prophet of the information society. Child Labor Photographs Child Labor Photographs by Lewis W. Hine by Lewis W. Hine
Occupations States How Much Did They Earn?
Introduction
By Jim Zwick
B orn to a working class family in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in 1874, Lewis Hine joined the workforce at an early age. Orphaned at fifteen, he went to work in a furniture factory where he labored fifteen hours a day to earn four dollars a week. Fortunately, he was able to complete his schooling at the Oshkosh Normal School and eventually studied at the University of Chicago. In 1901, the former head of the Oshkosh Normal School hired him to teach botany and nature studies at the Ethical Culture School in New York City. He continued his own education as well, receiving a Masters of Pedagogy degree from Columbia University in 1905. In that same year, Hine photographed immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, and a new career in photography would soon take him away from the Ethical Culture School. In 1904, the National Child Labor Committee was formed with the goal of ending the abuses of child labor that had been made painfully apparent to many reformers in the first years of the twentieth century. The 1900 census estimated that 1,750,178 children aged ten to fifteen were working in the United States. That was 18.2 percent of the country's children between those ages. Many younger children working in mills, factories, and on the streets were not counted by the census, and estimates including them put the number of working children at more than two million.

Describes award available to Elks (B.P.O.E.) members who have contributed to Scouting in their communities.
http://www.dacbsa.org/Awards/MarvinMLewisAward-Elks.htm
Marvin M. Lewis Award
Elks Founded in 1868, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is one of the oldest and largest private organizations in the United States. Today there are nearly 1.3 million members of the Elks in 2,200 local lodges found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and several overseas locations. Lodges provide recreational facilities for the entire family, and they are the focal point for many community services and charitable programs. The Marvin M. Lewis Award recognizes Elks in good standing who have significantly contributed to the youth of their communities by volunteering in the programs of the Boy Scouts of America. The Boy Scouts of America established the Marvin M. Lewis Award in 1998 in recognition of the Elks’ significant contributions to Scouting and the development of America’s youth. Marvin M. Lewis award winners are Elks who have brought Scouting to more youth, have assisted local Elks lodges in forming Scouting units, are fully trained in the skills of Scouting and are outstanding role models. These winners have also worked to bring Scouting and the Elks together to serve the community and have been instrumental in organizing scouting. The award is named for the Honorable Marvin M. Lewis, PGER, who has given such strong support to Scouting over the years. The Grand Lodge invites all local Lodges to nominate ONE candidate for the award. Candidates must have the recommendation of their local Lodge and their local Scouting Council to be eligible. Each year eight Elks will receive Marvin M. Lewis Awards, which consists of a medal and ribbon, a framed certificate, a lapel pin and a square knot.
