Smith Lake Park Located on Lewis Smith Lake at Trimble, it is one of the top rated recreational areas in Alabama. In addition to picnic pavilions the park also has camping hook-ups, tent campsites, swimming pool and water slide, carpet golf, boat launching and fishing. The Lewis Smith Lake has 500 miles of shoreline and is ranked as the number one lake in Alabama for spotted bass fishing and number three for crappie. Five world record catches for spotted bass is held by Smith Lake; a state record was set by a 32.8 stripped bass catch. Smith Lake Park hosts many events throughout the year, including an Independence Day Festival that features live music and one of the state's biggest fireworks shows. Genes responsible for biofilm resistance.
2. Natural inhibitors of microbial re sistance from medicinal plants. Bacteria have an unusual ability to resist chemically unrelated antimicrobials, including ones they never encountered in nature. We found that this ability is largely due to the presence of Multidrug Resistance Pumps, membrane translocases that pump out antibiotics from the cell (Lomovskaya and Lewis, 1992). MDRs are found in all microorganisms, and we wondered whether organisms that produce antibiotics learned how to combat this resistance. Medicinal plants make many different types of antimicrobials, but these are rather weak when tested in vitro. We find that this is due to their efflux by MDRs (Tegos et al., 2002).

"Grandpa" Al Lewis Runs for Governor of New York
by Mitchel Cohen, Brooklyn Greens
"We don't inherit the world from our ancestors, we borrow it from our kids." With those words in late August, Grandpa Al Lewis accepted the Green Party nomination for Governor of New York. After five weeks of intense activity the Green Party is on the ballot in the state of New York! Two hundred and forty Greens submitted petitions, amounting to some 33,010 signatures, to the Board of Elections in Albany-6,000 more than we were able to accumulate for Ralph Nader two years ago. And we got them in a week early.
When the marshals and sheriffs would leave, we'd break the lock and move the furniture back inside. Our candidates all come from the rank-and-file of ecological and social justice movements-no honchos need apply. Johann Moore for Attorney General; Howie Hawkins for Comptroller; Dr. Alice Green for Lt. Governor; Joel Kovel for US Senate; and ... drumroll please ... Al Lewis-that's right, "Grandpa Munster" himself-for Governor. I first met Grandpa in 1970 in New Haven, at the Free Bobby Seale and Erica Huggins protests. Bobby and Erica, leaders of the Black Panther Party, were on trial for their lives and 20,000 demonstrators waged a tow-day rally and, at night, pitched battle against the police and unsheathed bayonets of the National Guard. I was 21 and one of three SUNY Stony Brook reps on the coordinating committee organizing what would become, following the murder of four students at Kent State a few days later, the largest student strike in US history. We were writing up our three national demands when I saw Al in the doorway at Yale. He wasn't a speaker there, just one of the crowd. Al just winked as he walked past.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the relationship between outdoor air pollution and the respiratory health of children aged 8 to 10 years.
Design: ] each 6th day) and SO (daily mean and maximum hourly values) were estimated for each area (using air quality monitoring station data from July 1993 to June 1994).
Setting and survey participants:
Parents of 3023 primary school children (Years 3, 4 and 5) from industrial and non-industrial areas with air quality monitoring stations in the Hunter and Illawarra regions of New South Wales.
Main outcome measures:
Reported occurrence of four or more chest colds, four or more attacks of wheezing, and night-time cough without a cold for more than two weeks, all within the previous 12 months.
Results:
for PM and 0.16-0.90 parts per hundred million for SO

Some studies of Lakes Victoria and Tanganyika (and even of riverine cichlids) are included, in view of their relevance to understanding the Lake Malawi fauna and its history. Atmospheric Chemistry
Of the vast range of chemicals emitted and processed in the atmosphere volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a critical subset. They have influence on local, regional and continental scales, and impact on radiative forcing and climate as precursors to both ozone and aerosols. VOCs are also of particular interest since their typical atmospheric lifetimes, controlled mainly by the rate of reaction with the hydroxyl radical, are similar to the timescales of many meteorological and transport phenomena. In recent years it has become possible to probe the dynamics of the atmosphere using chemical tracers that act as 'clocks' for the time since emission. This has lead to a greater appreciation of regional and continental scale transport of pollution, and the challenges that this will bring in controlling local and regional air quality which may be dominated by upwind nation emitters.
Observing the transport and transformation of organic pollutants requires detailed field measurements of atmospheric composition, and this in itself produces numerous analytical challenges, be it in the remote inter-annual measurement of ultra trace species in locations such as Antarctica, or fast measurements from research aircraft in flight. Current research interests can be summarised in the following areas:
    • Gas phase oxidant chemistry . The oxidation pathways of organic compounds and the generation of tropospheric ozone from precursors and in particular the production and losses of carbonyl compounds such as acetone and methanol in the troposphere and their impact on radical chemistry. This is an area of significant field research, and we operate one of the NERC UFAM (Universities Facilities for Atmospheric Measurements) mobile laboratories which contains significant analytical instrumentation for use in remote locations. Abstract The effects of a full (4 X 4) block scheduling program and an alternate day (AB) block scheduling program in a junior high school were under investigation in this study through the use of an ex post facto
    Full Block (4 x 4) Semester Plan
The 4 x 4 semester plan is designed to create a new and different teaching and learning experience for students and teachers. Staunton (1997) found that teachers with more years of experience were significantly more satisfied with instruction in 4 x 4 semester plan scheduling than in traditional scheduling. However, Baker and Bowman (2000) found that teachers with less experience were more likely to view block scheduling positively than were more experienced teachers, as they appeared more willing to make the necessary instructional changes. Using direct observations and in-depth interviews, Queen, Algozzine, and Eddy (1997), found that teachers appreciated the flexibility in classroom instruction, longer planning periods, greater course offerings, and more time for in-depth study that block scheduling provided.
