"Abjuring any sense of history, the nation eternally improvises itself." The struggle against this wilful forgetting is a constant theme of Sallis's writing, and as he explores the American grain you can feel him raging against the feelgood factor. "You start whistling that 'Don't Worry, Be Happy' thing, I'll have to come over there and kick butt," states Lew Griffin, the protagonist of five Sallis novels. There, in a nutshell, is the Sallis aesthetic. Sallis's quest to uncover neglected history blazes through his most recently published work, a biography of the novelist Chester Himes (1909-1984). Himes's life certainly makes for a compulsive read: having taught himself to write while serving a 25-year sentence for armed robbery, he went on to become the most eloquent and angry African-American novelist of the post-war years.

I think the first may have been William Golding, from when we read Lord Of The Flies in high school, and I went out and picked up The Pyramid , which remains one of my favourite books ever. I read other Golding novels at that time, but none seemed to resonate with the same energy, although maybe it was just my fourteen year old lack of attention that drove me off to other things, like riding bicycles and watching motor cars. Whatever. Next came J. D. Salinger, who again I read in high school. We had the coolest English teacher for two years, really inspiring, and she made us read The Catcher In The Rye , and boy am I glad she did. It's clich³ to go on about it, but you know that book really is one of those artistic moments where something all comes together, a synthesis that connects timelessness with a very acute critique of a specific point in cultural and social history. Some people think that Salinger is over-rated, but of course they are wrong, and of course there was the Postcard obsession with Salinger too, with that imaginary Secret Goldfish single, and the Holden Caulfield International thing going on with Orange Juice. Son mélange personnel de style lui suscita des admirateurs dans le public, comme chez les juges. Il est apparu fréquemment dans les épisodes de la série télé Kung Fu au cotés de David Carradine . A cet époque il a ouvert une école de kung fu a Los Angeles avec Curtis Wong (qui fonda par la suite en 1973 la célèbre revue Inside Kung Fu). Il entama aussi une carrière de chorégraphe d'arts martiaux. En 1980 Lew ouvre une boutique qui s'appelait : Dragon Master il s'appuya sur sa notoriété pour faire de la publicité " Je crevais d'ennui, j'avais du refuser plusieurs propositions de tournage. Un beau matin je me suis révéillé en me disant bon ça suffit les conneries ! et le lendemain je faisait la tournée des plateaux " En 1992 il fut contacter par un producteur, il avait besoin de quelqu'un pour entraîner une vedette. Cette dernière devait apprendre à se battre et donner l'illusion d'une parfaite maîtrise...or la vedette en question ignorait tous des arts martiaux. Lew avait 2 semaines pour produire un miracle. Une telle demande pouvait rendre nerveux n'importe quel instructeur, mais pas James Lew, qui faisait son quotidien de ce genre d'exigences (il était depuis des années, l'un des chorégraphes de combat les plus cotés d'Hollywood) Lew était particulièrement connu pour son talent a transformer les acteurs ordinaires en guerriers authentiques. On the one hand, he agrees with religious and "social" conservatives on the way many things ought to be in our culture. On the other hand he believes in the necessity of limited government and free markets. He prefers liberty to the violence of tyranny and the poverty of socialism. And he believes that the Constitution, though perhaps not perfect, is the best means of limiting government, especially at the federal level. He becomes, by logical necessity, a state’s rights advocate. Better for injustice and bad laws to persist in a few states, then to be imposed on all states. He also becomes, practically, an isolationist. The Constitution authorizes Congress, not the President, to declare war. This is substantially different from "authorizing" the President to start a war. By this standard, the Constitutionalist would object to all of our wars since World War II. I am thankful that I never got on the Bush bandwagon. Five years ago, George W. Bush looked like a significantly better Presidential candidate than Al Gore. Bush was at least rhetorically on target on cutting taxes, a "humble" foreign policy, federalism, and a conservative judiciary. But his tax cut proposals were too modest – he wanted to repeal Clinton’s tax hikes but not his own father’s. His "humble" foreign policy was vague, as was his federalism; both had a "wouldn’t that be nice" ring to it, as opposed to "this is my plan." That left only some dim hope that Bush would nominate several Clarence Thomas clones to the Supreme Court.
