Mark Thwaite It is not midnight. Nor is it raining. But, somehow, I feel it should be. James Sallis does that to me. Gets under my skin. Changes my mood. Changes me. Paul Duncan (in his excellent Pocket Essential Noir Fiction A crime writer's crime writer, Sallis' star keeps rising. Recently we've been given the fourth novel in his series of works on the life of Lew Griffin, Bluebottle, and the latest in the series is due out in a few months - Ghost of a Flea, the final Griffin novel, was delivered to the publishers in February. A second collection of Jim's poetry, Black Night's Gonna Catch Me is also forthcoming in Ireland from Salmon Publishing in 2001. Last year saw the appearance of his collected essays Gently into the Land of the Meateaters (an excellent collection badly in need of a decent introduction to contextualise the work) and his collected short stories (two volumes in one book: first half sci-fi, second half crime) Time's Hammers. This mounting body of work is worthy of the highest praise and Sallis, the man of letters, is beginning to be talked about as, in the words of Harlan Ellison, "one of the significant ones". Born in 1944 in Helena, Arkansas, Sallis' writing career began with poems in Ann Arbor Review and Transatlantic Review, he published his first short story collection in 1976 and for a short while was editor of Michael Moorcocks' New Worlds. He has also published a number of remarkable science fiction stories but it was not until 1990's Long Legged Fly that Sallis began to establish a name outside the sci-fi milieu. Fly is the first of the Lew Griffin novels and, superficially, the most complex in structure. It is a fine novel (and my favourite) because of how insignificant the awful brutalities within the story truly are - the importance is Sallis' character study of Griffin.

James Sallis: An Overview
James Sallis: An Overview
James Sallis' 1992 The Long-Legged Fly is the first in a series of highly original private eye novels featuring African-American New Orleans freelancer Lew Griffin. With a poet's heart, Sallis' investigator deploys his knowledge of these meaningful streets to become not only a debt collector and private eye, but, fluent in Louisiana French, a part-time university lecturer in French literature, and, finally, a writer of detective fiction. Far-fetched, perhaps, but Sallis, a former science fiction writer from Helena, Arkansas (RIP Sonny Boy Williamson), portrays Griffin's transformation and multi-faceted existence with skill and subtlety. By the publication of Black Hornet, Griffin has become, like Sallis, an established writer of detective fiction. Delving into the world of African-American politics, Griffin recalls meeting Chester Himes, whose spirit permeates the book. Here Griffin explains the direction of his fiction: "Every day you head out in a dozen different directions, become a dozen different people; some of them make it back home that night, others don't." Caught between entertaining readers and conveying the notion that they are involved in a literary act, Sallis, well-versed in the history of pulp literature and the author of a study of Goodis, Thompson and Himes, must, if his novels are to work, distance himself from the novel-as-literary-product, yet sustain the narrative by maintaining its element of suspense. Not an easy task in a genre known for its structural demands. Nevertheless, Sallis remains true to his investigatory techniques. One can only admire his seriousness as much as his playfulness, as he alters the genre, stretching its boundaries as few have done.

REFERENCES COLUMNS Mystery General Fiction James Sallis has been writing prolifically for a long time; not just mysteries, but poetry, short stories, biographies and music criticism. His mysteries are inevitably compared to James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux series and to Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins books. Burke's detective books are set in New Orleans; Mosley's books are about a black detective. Not too hard to put two and two together to get to Sallis' black New Orleans detective. Not too fair, either. Sallis is an original. Practicing what I preach about reading series mysteries in chronological order, I started Sallis' long-running Lew Griffin series with 'The Long-Legged Fly', a book that's now over ten years old. I was expecting a detective story seeped in New Orleans atmosphere. What I got instead was a story about a black detective, set in New Orleans, written in a lean, poetic style that's about as close as you can get to penning blues on paper. 'The Long Legged Fly' spans close to thirty years in the life of protagonist Lew Griffin. We first meet Lew in 1964, in his hometown of New Orleans. He's a detective, recovering from the break-up of his marriage, he's black and he's very, very angry. Lew is hired by a couple of black men with questionable political ties and agendas to find a well-known female black activist who boarded a plane in New York, bound for New Orleans, and completely disappeared. He finds her - crazed, ranting, and in restraints, in the psych ward of a New Orleans hospital.

As the video started, interlocking circles of three colours appeared and then, as if by magic, formed into the ATV logo. The Long-Legged Fly by James Sallis Walker and Company Paperback (October 2001) “Like a long-legged fly upon the stream, His mind moved upon silence.” W.B. Yeats Novelist, musicologist, essayist, translator and biographer, James Sallis is as prolific as he is talented. Truly the consummate “man of letters,” Sallis’ prose is as close to poetry as you will encounter anywhere. His six novels featuring the New Orleans-based, African-American private detective, Lew Griffin, are considered classics in the genre. For all of that, however, they have not received (regrettably) the kind of attention that they deserve from the general reading public. Lew Griffin is a lost soul who, ironically, specializes in finding lost souls.

Moth by James Sallis Paperback ISBN 0-8027-7642-6 “Father, the dark moths Crouch at the sills of the earth, waiting.” James Wright Moth is the second novel in the Lew Griffin series. While not as structurally complex as The Long-Legged Fly , the book is nevertheless far from a straightforward narrative. The novel actually opens about one-third of the way into the story. The next fifteen chapters (around eighty or so pages) trace the events leading up to that initial point. From there the narrative moves in a more or less linear fashion to its conclusion.
