Back to biography list Sergio Leone, a renowned film director of "spaghetti westerns", was born in Rome on January 23, 1921. Leone was the son of a film industry pioneer, Vincent Leone, and Italian actress, Francisco Berating. His father, Vincent Leone began his acting career in 1904 and in 1908 started directing. Sergio leone entered into Italian films at age eighteen, and for many years worked as an assistant to various Italian directors as well ass American directors filming in Italy (usually making Biblical and Roman epics), (sergio.html, p.1). He appeared as an assistant on the film Ben-Hur and appeared in a bit as a priest in The Bicycle Thief. Leone was quoted as saying, "when I was twenty-five I received a proposal to direct some minor Italian films, but refused because I wanted to delay my directing debut. I was afraid of ruining my career and involving the producer in an economic disaster. In those days we had more sense of responsibility" (DeGornari, p.13). Since most of the money for these type of films came from Italian companies, the term "spaghetti western" was used as a term by critics who felt the films were nothing more than sideshow (Nudge, p.4). Leone made his official debut as a director with an epic, The colossus of Rhodes in 1960. Leone made The Colossus of Rhodes to finance his honeymoon trip to Spain. This film gave Leone instant success and as a result, was said to have been turning down six directing offers a day (DeFornari, p.15).
