Rival gangs. Like Manchester United and Liverpool. In those days Ford seemed to be struggling while General Motors had 75 percent of the American market. But when I was a kid my father's friend owned a Ford dealership, and we had access to all the cool stuff; the Falcons, the Sprints, the Mustangs. I also worked at a Ford dealership in high school. So consequently, when you're a kid those loyalties you make are hard to break. The rivalry was no more intense than when Ford and GM would race. It's the classic American story: Carol Shelby being the outsider who beat the Corvettes and the Corvette Grand Sports with the Ford 289 Cobra. It seemed very romantic to me that just one guy using a Ford engine could go on to do what he did. In the motion, attorneys for Leno asked that the gag order not be applied to the comic. But if it must be, they asked that it be amended to only prevent him from speaking about firsthand information he has in the case. "When the court issued this gag order more than a year ago, it could not possibly have been seeking to affect the ability of entertainment personalities like Mr. Leno to comment about public information in this case," the motion said. Leno's testimony appeared to contradict statements he made earlier this year during an interview with Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department investigators. During that session, the 55-year-old comedian claimed that the accuser and his family were "sort of looking for money" and that he felt he was targeted as a prospective "mark." Testifying as a defense witness, the "Tonight Show" host recounted for jurors how he received several voicemail messages in 2000 from the boy. Leno told jurors that the child "sounded very adult" in the messages and was "overly effusive for a 12-year-old." Leno said that seemed strange, considering he was a comedian in his fifties. "I'm not Batman," he said to laughs from the packed courtroom. At one point, Leno testified, he told an acquaintance who knew the boy, that the child "seemed a little scripted in his speech." Leno testified that he contacted the child while he was hospitalized and spoke to him and, perhaps, his younger brother. He was not certain if he had spoken with the boy's mother. When Jackson lawyer Thomas Mesereau asked if he heard someone talking in the background, Leno said it could have been the boy's mother or a nurse.
