The Online Compendium of What Ever Happened To and Where Are They Now?

What Ever Happened To... Tom Lehrer Real Name: Tom Lehrer
Category:
Claim To Fame: Tom Lehrer is perhaps one of the most unique pioneers of the "cult following" phenomenon: By day a mild-mannered Harvard University professor of mathematics, by night a singer-songwriter of scathing comedic parody as yet unmatched in cleverness and musicality. See references below for more lengthy accounts of Tom's career, but in a nutshell, he was teaching math at Harvard in the early 50's and composing satirical parodies on the piano. These began to get a following so he eventually spent $15 on studio time and recorded Songs by Tom Lehrer and had 300 copies pressed at his own expense. The first run sold out like hotcakes and Tom embarked on a tour. A cult phenomenon was born. Where are they now?
In 1959, after serving his time in the US Army, he grew tired of touring and recorded An Evening (Wasted) With Tom Lehrer and returned to Harvard. He later became the in-house composer for the NBC news satire That Was the Week That Was in the early 60's and in the 70's he wrote a number of songs for the children's favorite TV series The Electric Company Rhino Records released The Remains of Tom Lehrer in 2000.

Slice of wry: Tom Lehrer, the master of social satire and topical humor. King Lehrer CD retrospective celebrates godfather of sick humor By Greg Cahill HE HAD a dreadfully normal childhood. So how did Tom Lehrerhailed by the All Music Guide as "one of comedy's great paradoxes, a respected mathematics professor by day, [who] also ranked among the foremost song artists of the postwar period"become the godfather of sick comedy? That is one of life's little mysteries, though the newly released anthology The Remains of Tom Lehrer (Rhino), a three-CD box set replete with a 78-page hardcover booklet, does a swell job of showcasing the skewed wit that 50 years ago laid the groundwork for such musical parodists as Mark Russell and Weird Al Yankovic. Maybe it was all that Gilbert and Sullivan that Lehrer ingested during his childhood. Or perhaps it was the hours spent admiring the goofy on-screen antics of actor Danny Kaye. Or maybe his musical lunacy was just an outlet for a bright kid flexing his intellect. For his part, Lehrer once joked about his scientific "attempt to prolong adolescence beyond all previous limits."

New Math
by Tom Lehrer
Lyrics: Some of you who have small children may have perhaps been put in the embarrassing position of being unable to do your child's arithmetic homework because of the current revolution in mathematics teaching known as the New Math. So as a public service here tonight, I thought I would offer a brief lesson in the New Math. Tonight, we're gonna cover subtraction.
This is the first room I've worked for a while that didn't have a blackboard, so we will have to make do with more primitive visual aids, as they say in the ed biz. Consider the following subtraction problem, which I will put up here: 342 minus 173. Now, remember how we used to do that: three from two is nine, carry the one, and if you're under thirty five or went to a private school you say seven from three is six, but if you're over thirty five and went to a public school you say eight from four is six. And carry the one, so you have one hundred and sixty nine. But in the new approach, as you know, the important thing is to understand what you're doing, rather than to get the right answer.
Here's how they do it now
You can't take three from two
Two is less than three
So you look at the four in the tens place
Now that's really four tens
So you make it three tens
Regroup, and you change a ten to ten ones
